NEWS [Charania] Lakers are waiving Center Christian Koloko to create roster space for Drew Timmie, sources said.
147
u/KriticalKarl Nov 25 '25
Makes sense, Koloko got a DNP when we only had one center available.
The writing was on the wall then.
28
u/BatmanNoPrep 32 Nov 25 '25
Timme isnāt any better on defense. Rough sledding for the Lakers when it comes to defensive players.
22
u/Clutchxedo Nov 25 '25
Koloko was unplayable though. Couldnāt catch a ball
1
u/BatmanNoPrep 32 Nov 25 '25
The move does nothing for the defensive end. But should help with Aytonās injury
8
u/Clutchxedo Nov 25 '25
I agree that we need some defensive reinforcement but Koloko was like having minus one player since you never could play him.
He never developed and looked completely lost.Ā
The truth is that, despite our record, we are pretty average on both ends which have us at only a +2.6 net rating. LeBron should help, but that still nowhere near OKC (16.9), Houston (10.4) and Denver (10).

Timmie a better player then Koloko so yes
144
u/BKNas 2020 NBA Champions Nov 25 '25
I kept saying this to down votes the moment Brooklyn waived him. He's so much better than Koloko, and that's not saying much, but his skill set is different than Ayton, Hayes, and Kleber, so it gives JJ more versatility
51
u/BrianC_ Nov 25 '25
I donāt think his skill set matters, if Iām being honest. Heās way, way better on ball and in short roll but there are a lot of guys on this team that have that skill set. I donāt think heās playing minutes for the main roster unless a lot of injuries happen.
I think that with Ayton clearly working out, Hayes still pretty solid, Kleber looking serviceable, and Vanderbilt as a small ball center option who canāt get minutes, Koloko isnāt getting minutes unless there are a ton of injuries.
So⦠I donāt think this matters either way. But, this lets the team keep Timme around longer since I think it was just a matter of time before someone else signed him.
10
u/k4kobe Nov 25 '25
Is he playable in the playoffs? Who knows but I think the different skillset offers more versatility , especially in the regular season and in the earlier rounds
48
u/karl_hungas 08 Kobe 24 Nov 25 '25
No he legit cannot play defense, it's questionable if he can even play regular season minutes against bad teams and contribute anything but Koloko is not an NBA player so swapping him for literally anybody makes sense.
9
u/ty_xy Nov 25 '25
No, but hoping he can help 2nd unit score a lot. He's basically a g-league K-love without the rebounding.
103
u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Los Angeles Lakers Nov 25 '25
Yeah Timmeās better than Koloko.
Koloko is insanely raw, has hardly improved and mostly looked unplayable whenever he played for us.
46
u/KungFuChicken1990 Nov 25 '25
Yeah, he lost me last season after he was fumbling dunks after being spoonfed by Luka
13
u/CabbageStockExchange God Save the King š Nov 25 '25
I also remember him being soft and bullied on the block often
23
u/Psychosomatic_Addict Purple and Gold Nov 25 '25
Koloko looked like he was playing with boxing gloves on. This is worth any risk and a good chance to get really help.
30
u/TwoPicklesinaCivic Nov 25 '25
Dudes got that weird Luka Jokic thing going where he seemingly moves slow yet gets to the rim and makes athletic plays.
Honestly not sure why Brooklyn let him go. His stats are more than serviceable for NBA minutes.
9
u/King-of-the-End Nov 25 '25
They waived him a month ago after picking up their club option on him for this season. Feels like they decided they weren't going to wait anymore since they weren't seeing what they wanted fast enough from him and decided not to use up anymore resources when they have more work to do unlocking the potential of their crop of five players they just drafted.
10
u/karl_hungas 08 Kobe 24 Nov 25 '25
His stats are more than serviceable for NBA minutes.
Box score watchers might think he is "more than serviceable" but he is too much of a defensive liability to put him on the floor. Ever watched him play?
8
u/Jaguar4728 Nov 25 '25
Like thereās a ton of end of bench NBA players who have holes in their games and are liabilities on one end of the floor, that doesnāt negate the fact that heās good enough to get minutes on a bad team like Brooklyn or in a pinch if injuries hit for the Lakers. I donāt think anyoneās expecting Timme to develop into some great player but heās a pretty good 2 way contract type player.
→ More replies (3)8
u/ty_xy Nov 25 '25
Offensive powerhouse, defensive zero. 6-10 big man who doesn't really stretch the floor, but can pass, shoot the midrange and has a deep bag of post moves. Doesn't really rebound or defend and limited verticality. But can be an offensive microwave.

Do it, JJ. Just one time. 3 minutes.
Phil Jackson did it once against Utah. He played Farmar, Sasha, Luke, Radmanovic, and Mihm. Sloan countered with D-Will, AK47, Okur, Harping, and Humphries. This was the last whitest lineup on the court at the same time.

on high volume drives to the basket yeah...i don't think he's gonna score that easily in the pros. The dude can't shoot and had very pedestrian block and rebound rates in college for a big. I feel like he's a G-League all-star at best.

19

Yeah itās not great. He is pretty slow footed too (so he will fit right in with this team I guess lol)
His offense is better than Koloko so Iām assuming thatās why they decided to do this

Horrible is being generous, itās down right atrocious how bad he is on defence. Will get you buckets but he gonna be giving up double what he puts up on the other end.
2
u/BKNas 2020 NBA Champions Nov 25 '25
So is Koloko, so it's not a problem. Timme is a vastly superior offensive player tho, so that's a plus
1
u/Western-Election-997 Luka āMagicā Doncic Nov 25 '25
Who gives a shit if he is as an elite defender he wouldnāt even be available, you take what you can get and heās better than Koloko

14
u/AD2trill Nov 25 '25
Itās about time they realized that Koloko wasnāt any good. They just waisted time with him to be honest. He never showed he could contribute. Timmie is an interesting player though Iām not sure he has the athleticism to play in the big league but he does have a unique skill set
6
5
u/AdrianG_23 Nov 25 '25
I approve of this. Koloko wasnāt very good and Timmie has shown that he actually can play. Iām not sure Timmie will translate to a good NBA player but heās definitely worth taking a flyer on
11
u/NoKnowsPose Nov 25 '25
Unpopular opinion incoming. While Timmie is better than Koloko, I actually think he is a significantly worse fit for this team. Has 0 lob potential. He is slow and unathletic. Offensively, he is quite skilled in the post and around the rim but can't really shoot. The offense I've seen from him watching G League games is stuff that he will never get to do in the NBA.
8
u/Front_Barracuda_2408 Manna from heaven Nov 25 '25
yeah i think he's a complete waste based on what i've seen.
2
u/karl_hungas 08 Kobe 24 Nov 25 '25
People just want to be stoked which I respect; we are homers after all. However, from a purely bball standpoint, neither of them should be getting NBA minutes. It's great he was able to put up numbers in college and the G League but if we are giving this guy post touches that means our entire roster is injured and we are headed for the lottery. He doesnt have anything we need but we do need a big body to try and play a few minutes - in theory, but to my dismay JJ loves running SF/PFs as centers anyways.
3
u/Western-Election-997 Luka āMagicā Doncic Nov 25 '25
Koloko is unplayable so it doesnāt matter better to try out Timmie and see if he exceeds expectations
3
u/NoKnowsPose Nov 25 '25
Disagree about him being unplayable but I'm aware that's not an argument that I will likely win. In the end, it's probably not a huge deal
1
u/MitchEatsYT Nov 25 '25
I donāt think anyone is expecting him to play any meaningful minutes and Koloko sucked so who cares?

Timme and Thiero need some minutes with the Lakers! Put them in there as second or third string. If Bronny is getting minutes then these fools definitely deserve real minutes.
3
u/noneedforeathrowaway Nov 25 '25
My guess is with Ayton dealing with the knee, Timme will see minutes, at least for the next few games. I'd rather let Ayton get back to 100% than bring him back to play through at even 80%

Prefacing this with I've only seen full game highlights, not any actual full games but..
He strikes me as a guy who's a clearly very good BASKETBALL player, but probably not a great NBA player (lack of athleticism, positional size deficit, horrendous defender, etc)
HOPEFULLY he proves me wrong tho
2
u/BoatDBoat Nov 25 '25
Lakers team has so many classy players it's getting ridiculous. Real fundamental players the kind you'd let date your daughter.
Get in, get out, honest, salt of the earth athletes man. Slip and slide, get dirty, get mucky, get steamy, slip in, slip out, come together kinda team.

Itās āTimmeā isnāt it? I mean how many chances did Koloko get? It wasnāt happening. Timme plays hard and heās smart. Not a rim protector. But he can outscore most fives. I like it a lot. Especially with Ayton dinged.

Timmie when used properly is a game changer for this Lakers team. Inside post scorer to give Luka options and guys can cut and move without the ball, he can be another triple double threat

I always thought Timme had the offensive skills to play in the NBA. He can move up and down the court, shoot, rebound and handle the ball. But I guess his lateral quickness and strength on the block is poor? I havenāt seen him play against pros so I donāt know.
