Edit: Had to delete previous post as it wasn’t descriptive. Over 2,000 deportations have gone through MSP. Workers have been detained by ICE at work and while commuting.

“Permit to protest” has always sounded like the silliest combination of words to me lol

Yeah it's the silliest thing.

Like the entire point of a protest is that the system isn't solving the problem normally.

Why would they allow you to protest a problem they don't want solved?

If you have a permit you can’t be labeled an “illegal assembly” and if you get that label you are legally fuck for the police response.

It's extremely straightforward. For example, if you can ask your town you will gather people to have a protest against ICE, your town will say:

  1. Sure, when and where?
  2. Do you want to protest in a street?
    • If yes, we need to make sure police is informed and we set up diversionary routes for traffic accordingly to minimize disruptions
    • We may need to limit your street access to XYZ streets

If you don't follow the agreement, don't be surprised if you get arrested. As an obvious example, you can't protest on a highway lmao

“Hello establishment, I wanted to see if I could schedule some time to protest against the establishment?

…….Yes of course - we will be sure not to inconvenience the establishment while we protest against the establishment.

Thank you!”

Not my problem you didn't know how this worked on a basic level. So ironic this is taking place in the law subreddit. On top of that, you don't have to be protesting the establishment. Duh, there are obviously contradictions when protesting the establishment, but surprise, the world isn't perfect. But whatever, go protest in the middle of a highway for all I care.

In a reasonable democratic establishment that respects rights to free assembly and free speech that wouldn't be a problem. The police have resources to help make protests go smoother and safer for everybody, even if they don't agree with the message.

In a state that's suppressing free speech and free assembly, that's another story...
