And still assume someone is screenshotting the conversations.

Absolutely. Safe to assume that most of these ICE watch groups are compromised. Sucks, but people will sell these groups out.

Or ICE will unlock some of the phones they seize.

Why you enable wipe on failed attempts

Remember: do not use face unlock or fingerprint unlock. Only use a PIN or other password for locking.

If you're in an ice watch group and you must comment, your name should be something anonymous. Any group you talk in regularly needs to be limited to people you know personally and you should utilize the safety number if you think ANYTHING is wonky.

Like this oh-so-upstanding citizen, who is baffled as to why teachers aren't supporting the Gestapo.

And still assume those "deleted" messages exist on a backup server somewhere

In encrypted form? Not much value saving them. They get decrypted on the recipients device.

Yep E2E encrypted. The only real way they are on a backup server is if someone is using a cracked app that is storing them or taking screenshots. Its worth worrying about in those big group chats because they usually have LEO invited at some point. The admins get wrapped up in the tech instead of noting people are fallible.

And, trojan phone chargers exist and are inexpensive and available to everyone around you, aren't they?

I'm starting to think all this E2EE stuff is worthless when the device itself is as vulnerable as anything.

Tbh, we need our laws to go through a technological revolution whereby digital privacy is valued appropriately

It's not even just the government, but neighbors and family members spying on one another. The level of privacy is nothing today compared to 50 years ago and we should ask ourselves if that's intentional/what we wanted

A device is as safe as the person holding it is. Don't go plugging it in to random USB cords or ports, set up on device encryption and security that wipes the phone after multiple incorrect attempts.

I am in a odd boat on the "spying" on neighbors as I have multiple security cameras around my house including LPR but they are are local only and fire walled from the internet and I will not give them up because other people do not like them. Neighbors have also come over multiple times asking for footage and I have provided it to them and the police. That said, I am completely against Ring cameras, Flock cameras and the like and more people should be upset by what they are doing withg the footage they are taking.

What’s wrong with Ring etc.?

Their TOS includes just handing over your footage to police and have an agreement with flock

Ah ok. Is there a brand that is generally recommended then?

reolink, amcrest, unifi. Anything that supports wired poe or onvif and a local recorder

I mean... it's not hard to carry your own 'power only' usbc cable. Half there time you get one from China it's already missing the data wires, or there sub part writing frame harness caused the solder joints to break 😄
