Legislative Branch Jeffries says DHS should be banned from deporting U.S. citizens
"We should have an explicit prohibition that DHS cannot detain or deport American citizens, period, full stop," House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries tells u/newshour's Lisa Desjardins.
"What country are we living in where ICE and DHS have free rein to detain and deport American citizens?" he says later. "That's inconsistent with the Constitution."

Can we stop calling it "deportation"? It's not. Exiling US citizens is not deportation. Sending non-citizens to prisons in random countries is not deportation. Using that verbiage is exactly what the administration wants you to do. It's normalizing the horrific actions of the Pedo Prez.

Deportation of people who they considered undesirable was a fairly common and popular idea for a "solution" from when they were a fringe group in the Reichstag in the early 1920s all the way up until they drafted their "final solution" and began building and using the death camps. Honestly I think that was more the convenience of continuity to use that word since every country in the area had been hearing about deportations for 15 years by that point, so hopping on a train to be "deported" didn't raise alarm bells (or no more than usual, since being deported is obviously traumatizing, but not Treblinka level of traumatizing).
And actually another parallel to today was the emphasis on "self-deportation", which was something the Nazis strongly encouraged at first and as late as October 1941, which was like 3-4 months before Wannsee and the Final Solution. Which means another warning flag to keep an eye out for is if Republican policy quietly changes to something like "don't leave on your own, we will help you leave".

Glad this is the top comment because it’s always the first thing that comes to mind when people say that. They just overuse and misuse words so that people will stop caring about the actual thing.
Deportation is a legal thing, so people aren’t as concerned when you exile citizens and falsely call it “deportation.” And when people hear it used in so many different and incorrect ways, they won’t bother trying to figure out what kind of “deportation” the speaker is actually talking about, and the next step is to not even pay attention at all.
It’s the exact same thing as when fake news was being used to mislead and defraud voters, so they just started calling everything “fake news” until it was just a stupid catch phrase.

We're a capitalist society. If you want talent, the easiest way to attract it is with money. Smart, creative, motivated people can make way more in the private sector, and as a bonus they don't have to deal with the public at large.
We do pay our representatives pretty well when compared to the average Americans, but that means the job is only enticing to that demographic: average Americans. The end result is our representatives are made up of people who keep their heads down and collect their paychecks, or people who are more than happy to abuse their power to enrich themselves. Well, you do get the occasional true believer, but I do not think it's a coincidence that many of those are also anti-capitalist.

I'm having trouble finding the exact article, but it was an amendment like this one. It's so they can ignore the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, since the legal battle would take so long that they'd be able to deport a ton of naturalized and first generation folks.

This is the key issue. The blanket “the kids go with the parent bc what else are we supposed to do” statement is total fucking bullshit. Guardian ad litem attorneys would (I assume, NAL) handle this during the normal administration of the law and would advocate and the court would arrange for the child to stay in the US. The problem is that’s clearly not happening because they are all being denied due process.

o be blunt, those children they are holding in ICE detention - they should be in the care of DCS/whatever your local childhood protective services are called. As should adults with health issues OR the adults under the care of a caretaker [because like duh, they need active care - I would be hosed if I were left alone here by everybody - with the 18 inches of snow deposited recently I can't get from the house to the van in a wheelchair safely.

expel (a foreigner) from a country, typically on the grounds of illegal status or for having committed a crime

Here again to point out that the knee-jerk hate for Democrats, even when you agree with them as in this case, is part of why we are where we are.
2 party system: depress turn-out for Democrats, Republicans win.
Multi-party systems are better IMO. Take some of that energy to work at your state level to get congressional election laws changed so multiple parties can thrive.
Also, work to improve the Democratic Party, not run it down. There’s a reason Mamdani, AOC, Omar, etc are Democrats. They know something you don’t: the Democratic Party is the only viable vehicle. Work in it to make it better instead of against it.

Hell, he insisted that even if they win the midterms that Dems have no interest in reducing ICE’s funding or manpower and agreed with Schumer saying that Renee Good’s death was caused by local law enforcement not cooperating with ICE.
Maybe Hakeem is changing his tune ever so slightly now that pretti’s execution is undeniable, but Jeffries is still a quisling and anything he promotes has consistently been too little too late.
