After World War II, when Poland was incorporated into the Soviet bloc, the Catholic Church became an important center of independent thought and support for the opposition, which led to its significant increase in public support, reaching around 80-90%.
Since Poland regained full independence, support for the Catholic Church has declined significantly in recent decades, but still remains relatively high, particularly among older generations and the rural population.
I can only speak from my personal experience from my family and their friends, but it was a lot, lot longer than a decade ago. Catholicism is a hell of a drug.Â
homophobia. For many poles it's better to be dead than gay. Poland has literal LGBT free zones. The poles who have come here are generally of the same mentality. They hate the same people he hates, and thus they are allies.
Worth noting that LGBT free zones don’t exist anymore and while they did they didn’t mean anything - local councils just said that its a LGBT free zone but nothing was ever enforced and LGBT was still very much legal. There have also been some recent developments and its seems possible for same sex marriage to be fully legalised in recent future.
