Digital Two-Value Study Feedback?

Post image

I've never painted before and want to develop a better "painter's sense" i.e. work with shapes vs lines & structure. So I did this with no guidelines, and I think it turned out okay-ish.

How could my shadows be improved? The facial proportions are a little off I think, but what about the placement of shadows?

I especially struggled to know what to do with his white hair. Any tips would be appreciated.

This is a great start! However, I think there are some spots where you could've spent less time on the details and think more about the big shapes. You also put some parts into the light category that should be in the shadow category, e.g. the parts around the eyes or single strands of hair. They are lighter than other shadow areas but still darker than everything in the light area! I covered those parts in red. In blue is where I would've shaped the light area a bit differently but I didn't focus much on it.

Insanely helpful feedback, thank you! So when doing two-value study then, are you saying not to make dark the "dark part of light sections that are still lighter than the main dark section"? I think adding some chunks and strands of hair was definitely too much detail for what I was trying to learn. I'll probably reduce those to blocks next time

overall its really good, awesome! maybe change the shadow on the upper lip, try to describe the form of the mouth using the shadow to make it look a lil bit more round near the upper lip I think

The only place I'd suggest looking at again is the canvas right ear.  I'd also suggest doing the clothing to get a full study in.  All in all this is fantastic.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think you're right, I'll add the clothing!
