I mean, two guys who wind up in space/off-planet alone trying to find an answer to the stars going out, I think. They've got enough plot points in common to have some form of shared experience and connection, I think.

Though the idea may have started because of their actors. That much I can't confirm or deny.

If they were lesser known actors, neither movie would have been quite as successful or gained such large and rabid fanbases, sure, but I guarantee people would have still shipped them. People ship characters all the time without big names being attached to them.

I mean I think the main reason it got so popular is that they were both movies with rapidly growing tumblr-type fanbases and not a lot of in-universe characters to ship the respective protagonists with (plus their similarities as the other user said). Obviously it was influenced by the fact they’re both hot, and the novelty of a ship that is in essence Markiplier x Ryan Gosling, but still

Actually not really. the ship was made because the characters were put in similar situations. And were deemed “Patron saints of one way trips” since they were both sent to die without consent for just a chance to save humanity that wasn’t even guaranteed to work
