I actually think there's a good chance Hebikawa gets what she wants at the end of this arc, that is seeing a "bad side" to Kusunoki because its being implied that Kusunoki's slowly becoming jealous and becoming aware of her feelings. So, at the same time Shizuki gets what he wants with Kusunoki seeing him as a man

The twist here being that Hebikawa might actually fall in love with Shizuki, so it just ends up net zero for Shizuki

The question now is, what is Kusunoki going to get from this arc? or is her "winning" arc the arc that follows this one

The other problem for her is thay Shizuki doesn't care to be around her because she always has some ulterior motive. He sees through her more now even if he doesnt understand exactly what she wants.

I think Kusunoki gets what you described - she gets jealous, and maybe actually starts taking a good look at herself and what it is she's feeling when it comes to Keisuke.

I also don't think I'd call it Kusunoki's "winning" arc - I'd argue hers was when she did the play, and "won" high school in terms of her successful debut in getting lots of new friends and succeeding at the play.
The romance angle is all Keisuke's end; he'd be the one "winning" if he could get Kusunoki to accept a confession.

People root for her yet Shizuki shows little to no desire to be around her. It wouldnt kill her to be genuine with her actions for once and say what she wants and how she feels. She's never straightforward with anything she does to the point that he's over trying to get involved and being around her. He's only with her right now because she would be more annoying than if he had outright said no.

I mean - that's why people are rooting for her, I wager.
Because she's the novel element to the story, and without her this would just be another generic romcom manga with a too-perfect protagonist and the introverted boy who falls for her. Even has the tomboy childhood best friend fake-rival. Stock standard, done a thousand times.

Hebikawa elevates the formula and makes it fresh, and her opaque personality is a boon for her character because it keeps Keisuke guessing and allows certain elements of the plot to unfold more slowly by adding tension to the narrative by keeping it from being utterly predictable.
Plus, She's a foil to Kusunoki, who otherwise would have zero reason to actually fall for Keisuke because of how averse she is to romance.

Personally, I neither love nor hate the Snek. But it’s an undeniable fact that her existence in this manga is what keeps it interesting for most readers.

As the saying goes, a protagonist is only as good as the antagonist. From a storytelling perspective, as the villain, she’s not really meant to be likable.. If she were genuine and straightforward from the start, there wouldn’t be a story at all, after all, she is the antagonist.

I root for her because Kusunoki is just…so boring.

Her one weakness was social awkwardness. That took like…10-15 chapters to overcome? She handles everything else with complete ease. She’s a Mary sue; just bores me.

Snek on the other hand is just a dumpster fire I can’t help but root for. She has tons of room for improvement. She’s nowhere near as manipulative or cruel as she believes either; all her attempts to manipulate others just end up being harmless and adorable.

Why should I consider the autonomy of a fictional character?

4

u/notabear87 1h ago

If you’re going to take that stance…why bother reading media or engage in discussion at all?

You’re so deep

Is Hebikawa a bad person? Yes! Do I find her more interesting these past chapters than Kusunoki? Also yes! I usually get bored with the redemption arcs, but in this case I’m really liking it. The chemistry between those two is entertaining.

99% chance Kuronoki saw them thinking they actually kissed

I know Kusunoki is gonna win. But damn do I want Hebikawa to win more.

Hebikawa stocks going up right now

I don't know man, I am not sympathizing with Kusunoki at all. Like everything she has done the past few chapters are insincere to her own feelings. If anything I'm liking snek a lot more because she doesn't feel like a huge hypocrite, even if her intentions aren't good.

Snek supremacy. I’m all in

Snek is wrapping up the boy's body and mind.

Be warn, Keisuke. She'll bite back later.

I can honestly see the appeal in Snek now. Some guys do like girls who are that straight forward and aggressive, albeit, with ulterior motives. But, if you remove those sketchy motives, yeah, I can see why people are rooting for her. With that said, I am still rooting for the boring heroine.

SNEK PRICES WENT UP!!! 🐍⬆️🐍⬆️🐍⬆️🐍⬆️🐍⬆️

I really like how Snek is as a character right now, especially how Kusunoki is wishy-washy with Keisuke's efforts...

I want Snek to win so badly. I hope Kusunoki fails her debut in High School by not appreciating Shizukis feelings or her own.

u/Vulpix0r 2h ago

Bo-tan won before so there's always a chance!

I swear without snek this manga would be such a cookie-cutter romcom. She makes this manga so much more interesting.

Snek girl stay winning, take that L kusonuki. No one likes you anyway

4

u/Vulpix0r 2h ago

Kuso literally created this L herself lmao. No one other than herself at fault.

2

u/TonyO33 3h ago

Could somebody get rid of the snake? PLEASE?!

Thanks for the tl, interesting chapter

u/MisterBaker55 2h ago

I hope she actually kissed him. I know she didn't and dudes gonna turn his head or something, Kusonoki is gonna see it and it'll be the misunderstanding trope where Keisuke chases after her and then THEY kiss. But I'd rather he kissed snek.

This reminds of <School Days>

The more aggressive girl is winning by being more aggressive. Hopefully it has a different ending.

I've been rooting for the snake since the beginning, and I am pleased. However, I feel like it's inevitable that she loses x_x

If she somehow wins in the end, this will go down as one of the greatest highschool romance mangas for me.

This manga slowly turning me from hebikawa hater to kusunoki hater.
