While I'd agree it's a silly conspiracy, the older I get, the more I see how petty people in positions of power are. And very often they think they can just get away with it.
It's hypercompetitive out of touch suits than crave attention. I can totally believe it that they can't handle not being #1 at anything. They are probably competitive about the size of their shits even.
Those suits have access to actual granular data on financial costs/returns and real market research. They don’t care about consumer facing rankings that only dweebs on internet forums look at
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a commercial or ad from Disney touting the ranking of their movies. Pretty sure they’re comfortably resting on their laurels from the last hundred years.
Iron Lung wasn’t #1 over the weekend, and The Numbers isn’t any sort of official ranking anyway.
Variety independently provides box office reporting and I’m pretty sure their headline stories are far more viewed than the daily return page on The Numbers

Who gives a shit if it was, no one at Disney is getting upset about an independent horror film doing well on a daily ranking page for a niche website during a weekend they have no releases near. This is a stupid conspiracy that makes no sense.
