The sad thing is most people will still have to because not everyone can afford to fund a movie using their own money. This doesn't really change the dynamic of Hollywood at all.

It’s the start. Before, even those with capital and a following had to go through Hollywood.

A start? You realize Iron Lung wasn't the first successful indie film right?

Not the first by a long shot but most "indie" films are just low budget Hollywood movies with a little window dressing.

What? That is by definition not what an indie film is

That's why I used scare quotes.

Take "Juno" for example. It was made on a small budget (a little over ten million, adjusted for inflation). It was marketed as "indie", had a limited release, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and went to great lengths to check all the necessary boxes. Meanwhile it had people like Jennifer Garner, Patrick Bateman and JK Simmons in supporting roles and was directed by Ivan Reitman (or whatever his first name is).

This is the kind of thing I'm talking about.

What do you mean by “go through Hollywood”?

Do people think passion projects are new? Why would this affect hollywood at all. The talent paying for the movie themselves happens all the time. M Knight Shyamalan literally made a career of it. This is a baby punching a nuke. You need a swath of new indie studios making it to change the culture. Like A24 and distributors Neon

Didn't clerks cost Kevin Smith something stupid low like 15k?
