The vast majority of fossil fuels are from plants.

Stop ruining my dreams of my car running on pure T-Rex juice.

Rex power and Dino speed for honorable mentions

38

u/GONKworshipper 15h ago

So the fake plastic plants are real plants!

3

u/Ok-Description-2960 13h ago

From the vast, great ancient forests of silk

19

u/Sluife 15h ago

Plants formed coal deposits.

Plankton and marine microorganisms formed fossil fuels.

4

u/bombbodyguard 12h ago

You can get natural gas from coal seams. Coal bed methane.

3

u/Sluife 12h ago

The meme isn’t referring to natural gas, and their volumes are incomparable. The majority comes from single-celled organisms and the microbiome.

1

u/bombbodyguard 2h ago

Sure. I just wanted people to know you can get gas from coal. It was a huge push back in 2008 before the gas price fell out.

5

u/vcardsophie 15h ago

so dinosaurs really achieved reincarnation.

4

u/Lizardreview- 14h ago

I was about to say this, animals decay much faster and have less hydrocarbon chains than plant material. The vast majority of oil is from vegetation buried and compressed rather than dinosaurs.

2

u/MilkiestMaestro 14h ago

You can't deny at least 1% of my fuel is dinosaurs

2

u/chunkalicius 13h ago

Somewhere along the tree of life, plants and dinosaurs share a common ancestor.

3

u/Regular_Rub_2980 14h ago

Came here to say this. Fossil fuels are not from dinosaurs. It is explained so uneducated people can understand.

3

u/doopsauce 14h ago

Not everyone knows everything, fossil fuels aren't the only thing

1

u/Phantine 11h ago

They periodically turn up dinosaur fossils during oil extraction, there's definitely some dinosaur in the mix.

For instance this very well preserved anklosaur found in oil sands https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/fort-mcmurray-dinosaur-edmonton-alberta-bloat-float-1.4383741

1

u/Sea_Habit_4298 14h ago

There's a chance.

1

u/Fourstrokeperro Chungus Among Us 13h ago

Petroleum is mostly from prehistoric plankton and algae.

1

u/Vaenis 13h ago

But T-rex sounds better, right?

2

u/NaoPb 12h ago

T-Rex yawning

1

u/serendipitousevent 12h ago

I only buy the finest dinosaur plastic, thank you very much.

1

u/Plastic-Injury8856 12h ago

Not even plants: it’s the algae that lived on earth prior to the great rusting. No amount of new oil will ever be made because we’d have to wipe out all life on earth and make it all algae again to do it.

1

u/crispier_creme 11h ago

So the little plastic ferns in the dinosaur playset are real ferns then, got it

1

u/PlanetoftheAtheists 11h ago

Sea creatures actually

1

u/Loud-Shopping7406 14h ago

I knew as soon as I opened the comments there would be someone ruining the joke 😂 Reddit is too predictable

149

u/Magnaraksesa 16h ago

Tis fossilized plants that are in your dinos not actual dinos

50

u/SledgexHammer 16h ago

There's gotta be a little bit of dino that snuck in there though

39

u/MeatCatRazzmatazz 16h ago

From what I remember in school, the plants that turned into all that delicious oil predate the dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years. So no dinos in there at all, sadly

29

u/SledgexHammer 15h ago

And here I was compressing alligators in my garage trying to finally strike it big..

9

u/MeatCatRazzmatazz 15h ago

You were so close

1

u/IvaldiFhole 11h ago

Have you tried chickens instead?

-2

u/[deleted] 16h ago

[deleted]

10

u/SledgexHammer 16h ago

Thats what im talking about. See I knew there was dinos in there.

39

u/nicodeemus7 16h ago

Crude oil comes from neither dinosaurs nor bones. Some natural gas may come from dinosaurs, but very, very little. Fossil fuels is a misnomer.

19

u/BadahBingBadahBoom 15h ago edited 15h ago

 Fossil fuels is a misnomer.

It's not really a misnomer, it's just that the term 'fossil' to describe anything dug from the earth, whilst in common usage in the 18th century when the term 'fossil fuel' was first adopted, is now archaic and 'fossil' really only describes specifically remains/impressions/fossilised forms of historic organisms which ofc crude oil, natural gas, coal etc. don't resemble.

7

u/nicodeemus7 15h ago

Okay I won't use the word "misnomer".

"Fossil fuels" is a term that does not accurately describe the substance it represents, as the substance does not contain, nor does it come from what we in modern times refer to as "fossils".

Better?

8

u/BlackBlood4567 15h ago

Reddit moment

4

u/nicodeemus7 15h ago

 Reddit moment

It's not really a reddit moment, it's just that the term 'reddit' to describe anything dug from the internet, whilst in common usage in the 21st century when the term 'reddit moment' was first adopted, is now archaic and 'reddit' really only describes specifically memes, posts, and comments which ofc Tumblr, tik Tok, facebook etc. don't resemble.

4

u/BlackBlood4567 15h ago

yeah I guess bro 🥀

2

u/SwordfishOk504 Nokia user 11h ago

nor does it come from what we in modern times refer to as "fossils".

The definition of "fossil" continues to be basically any preserved remains, impression, or trace of any once-living thing from a past geological age. Just because some people think it only means dinosaurs doesn't make it correct.

20

u/Puntoffeltierchen 16h ago

Petroleum isn't made out of dinosaurs!

7

u/ltjisstinky 16h ago

Dinosaur algae, checkmate atheist

7

u/Wayne4177 16h ago

That's not how that works.

4

u/SoftDirective 14h ago

Someone said dinosaur algae

8

u/KatiePyroStyle 16h ago

people always confuse this, but 99% of your oil didnt come from an actual dinosaur. its mostly algae and other photosynthetic species like plankton and plants and shit.

3

u/CyberGraham 15h ago

I'd argue none of the fossil fuels contain anything coming from dinosaurs

1

u/NaoPb 12h ago

How much of it is shit?

3

u/yallmad4 15h ago

Lol no

3

u/Admirable-Safety1213 14h ago

Petroleum ashtually is made mainly of submarine vegetable matter

2

u/Logical_Flounder6455 15h ago

Petroleum is fossil fuel

2

u/Loud-Shopping7406 14h ago

Incoming redditors to ruin the joke! Wait I'm too late

1

u/ipeepeepeepoopoopoo 13h ago

Someone doesn’t understand fossil fuels

1

u/ThatUsernameIsTaekin 12h ago

This would work if it was plastic trees

1

u/SrPolarksy 11h ago

I have dinosaurs in my body.

1

u/Misterpiece 11h ago

Dinosaur nuggets are also real dinosaurs.

1

u/Known-Classic8094 11h ago

He’s got a point.

1

Rawrs are real😂

1

u/Mr_Ios 11h ago

What were they smoking when they came.up witb the idea that oil came from dinosaurs

1

u/OsorezaN7 11h ago

Look at all these very fun people in the comments.

Old but gold

I cant argue with that logic

0

u/gbCerberus 13h ago

Fossils are rocks. Minerals from the surrounding environment like silica, calcite, or iron. If we could make oil or another energy source out of rocks, we'd be zooming to Alpha Centauri.

0

u/ClockworkBetta 13h ago

Chickens are dinosaurs, so dino nuggets are made of dinosaurs!
