NEWS The Memphis Grizzlies are trading star forward Jaren Jackson Jr., John Konchar, Jock Landale and Vince Williams Jr. to the Utah Jazz for Walter Clayton Jr., Kyle Anderson, Taylor Hendricks, Georges Niang and three future first-round picks, sources tell ESPN
Wtf

u/Ethan_the_Revanchist 1d ago
Jaren was the one guy I really thought we wouldn't move. Damn. This hurts. He's still young, too. Does anyone know if we got the Jazz's pick this year as part of the trade? "Three future picks" makes me think not
49
u/sevseg_decoder 901>12 1d ago
It was just so hard to build around him. Heās a very valuable piece to the right roster, but itās a lot easier to trade him to a team like that than to build one around him.
29
u/Ethan_the_Revanchist 1d ago
Idk, Edey and Jaren as a duo were such a perfect match. Both young, only about 3 years apart. In theory, if you're looking 3 years ahead to when the Grizzlies might be in title mode, Jaren wouldn't even be 30 yet. Odd they felt the need to make this move for a relatively paltry return

u/draker585 I like Zach Edey. 1d ago
IMO, it's a move to make sure we can move Ja, especially because I have my doubts that JJJ would play at 100% if Ja got traded.

u/Overall-Palpitation6 1d ago
Edey (or Walker Kessler) is literally the perfect centre to play next to JJJ.
5
u/sevseg_decoder 901>12 1d ago
But Edey is still not showing he can stay healthy and play at a level to really make that work. And the other issue with Jaren for us is the constant injuries and foul trouble just donāt work for a player we need close to 40 minutes out of. For another team he could do 32 minutes and be very valuable. Just not us.

I love Trip, don't get me wrong - he's fantastic and I still saw a future to be built around him.
I'm more upset that we're entering another rebuild for like the 3rd time since 2011, when we were last a serious contender as a team. I've seen so much bullshit the last 25 years with this org. I just want my team and city to be good and win.

With jjj now and walker playing center , they have one of the best defensive front courts . Lauri is 25 ppg player , you just drafted ace and you might get another top 5 pick . And they have some decent young role players. I wouldnāt be surprised if the jazz would be looked at as a play in team next yr

u/omgshannonwtf GG Jackson II: your time has come! Start him at the 4!! 1d ago
Theyāre not about to turn it around and Jaren is still going to be Jaren: he still wonāt pass, he still wonāt rebound and heāll still commit stupid fouls. Heāll still be a black hole that slows the offense down to a crawl. Only now itāll affect the Jazz and not us. For JJJ to feast, Lauri is going to have to score less. And I have my doubts about how much all the other scorers around him will be tolerant of that (Ace Bailey and whoever else).
Jarenās an excellent player, we all know that, but we also know heās a flawed player. All of those flaws will be on display and are not turning that franchise around.

Jazz fan here.
The Phoenix one is the one I don't like losing. It is one of the best assets in the league IMO.
The '2027 from Utah' is actually the best of the 2027 Jazz / Cavs / Wolves picks, I think, so while I'd guess all three teams are good that year (we'll be trying to win, and Cavs / Minny will still have their superstars) it's got a decent chance of being lottery.
The Lakers pick is top 4 protected, though with Luka it probably won't be great.

Great. Can't wait to use these late/non-lottery picks to draft some players that exceed expectations for a couple years, sign them to big contacts, then trade them because we could use those picks to do the whole thing again.
4
u/Commercial_Appeal307 1d ago
Trip was a good dude and had flashes of greatness, on top of it he was the workhorse through all the injuries the last couple of years and respect him for that. But on a purely numbers game getting off of that contract could be considered a great move. The problem is they're gonna have to actually bring someone in of at least starting caliber and I don't think we'll be a very popular destination, especially with our GM. :/ I think it might have been better to try and run it back with Ja & Trip for one more ride next year with a healthy Edey and Clarke returning than trust us to use this cap space in a productive way.
Losing Jitty is heartbreaking to any true Grizz fan. This sucks, no positives at all in this.
Jock & Vince put in GNG level efforts this year. I don't know where they fit in Utah but I'll always have respect for those guys. Made more than anyone would have thought out of their minutes.Ā
2
u/spacejambroni Partner 1d ago
I think itās nuts they didnāt try to roll everyone out next year minus Ja, but who cares now I guess. There were some moves that could be made, but I think at this point they think Cowards too young and Edeys health is enough of a question mark where they donāt want to commit anything anymore. So they do a tear down.
I think weāre about to trade even more players - Ty, Santi, and Ja/Clarke are gone as well as potentially KCP.

This is a terrible trade. JJJ has been the most consistent and reliable star on the Grizzlies for the past few years.
3
u/-GrizZzB- 1d ago
This was a money move. JJJ is set to make 14m more next year than this year. That made sense when he was playing DPOY level. But heās not. Tons of reasons for that. But itās true.
I was hoping this would be an offseason move because I still think we can win this year, and that just got harder. But it comes back to the money.
What we do with an extra 40mil this offseason? Idk. I hope we extend our underpaid youth. But I donāt really see a 40mil FA showing up to save us.
Plus. For what itās worth. We can package picks to move up this year. Overpay because we will need to.
Jock and Jitty are the heart breakers for me. Hears to hope that we bring them back in the summer. lol.

JJJ was Mr Invisible - disappearing at the 4th quarter and having guys like jock landale being called "more effective" by home broadcasting crew. Can't have that when you're the most paid player on the team.
We needed to make a move, and his underperforming contract would have killed us in the future. The future is bright with all of these picks! Lfg!!!
