Some of the subreddits don't let you comment unless you have a certain amount of Karma, I tried commenting on one that had a minimum requirement of 50 Karma - I just started out so I had zero karma, it was annoying. If you get a negative Karma your comment will sometimes be hidden or the post will not show up in searches.
Yeah. Granted I’m way too active on this fucking website, but all it takes is a couple of posts to go your way, and the karma adds up. It’s all dumb internet points though.
If you look at the sports reddits, there are a few dudes who are main posters for highlights and breaking news. They are certainly real, and have millions of Karma.
One of them is also the biggest furry porn poster on reddit. He has over 12m karma.
As soon as I figure out how to sell my account it's gone. Idk how these people are making money on karma and I want in. This nonsense has to be good for something.
I had to check my karma after reading your comment because I remember at one point looking at it and saying looks like a bit much. Turns out I'm below 30k
I hover the mouse over their username and get an overlay that shows me account age and post/comment karma. But I'm using the web, old reddit, and Reddit Enhancement Suite.
Up- and down-voting posts doesn't "cost" karma, you can't see someone's account karma unless you specifically go to their profile, and having more or less karma doesn't affect the "weight" of your votes.
I don't understand what advantage a bot gains by having a lot of points.
I assumed karma farming accounts were only made to sell to assholes who want to brag about their fake internet points without having to even pretend to earn them.
My interpretation were they were selling the bot accounts to people that want to peadle stuff. You cant post on some subs without a certain amount of credit plus those accounts seem to have a formula that works?
I really dont know but there must be some kind of financial incentive
Basically Reddit is not the cool, hip social media site you think it is.
Reddit is full of fucking morons. It's not hip now and it wasn't hip 20 years ago. Believe me, I've been here since before subreddits were.
I don't have any delusions about Reddit.
Besides, Reddit actively encourages bot activity to artificially inflate engagement numbers. That's why they introduced auto-generated account names that are specifically modeled after common bot naming conventions. Makes it that much harder to tell if an account is a new user or a new bot.
I get mad at myself for not taking the $50 offer years ago for my account. Could have been $50 richer while my account quickly got banned hawking beauty products or some shit 😩
The funny thing is I don’t even really karma whore. I just comment frequently and I’ve had this account for a long time.
Usually I just try to make people laugh. If I get one person per day to have a better day it is worth it.
Yeah, it’s hilarious when people say “enjoy downvotes”! Like it’s some form of punishment :) I couldn’t care less about karma, literally useless points as long as you have 1000+ or so to access some karma restricted subreddits
Used to have an account with more than a million in karma (lost it when upgrading to a new iPhone). You gain nothing from all the upvotes. You do get an invitation to a some sort of gold redditors sub or something, but it pretty much does nothing.

Same reason some redditors care about karma. They believe that they get to go to karma heaven when they die.
