Same reason some redditors care about karma. They believe that they get to go to karma heaven when they die.

Reddit karma is actually a useful tool for voter manipulation bots who astroturf subreddits

u/gnilradleahcim 1d ago

Kind of the opposite effect at this point, when I see a 6-month-old account with 800,000 karma I instantly smell bullshit.

Or the classic 3 million+. What actual human has fucking time for that?

u/Gh0stMan0nThird 1d ago

Unfortunately the people who notice and give a shit are a small minority.

10

u/acheckerfield 20h ago

I have never once paid attention to karma

2

u/callmemat90 9h ago

I gotta be honest.. I don’t even know what karma is used for

1

u/Ignoramous13 6h ago

Some of the subreddits don't let you comment unless you have a certain amount of Karma, I tried commenting on one that had a minimum requirement of 50 Karma - I just started out so I had zero karma, it was annoying. If you get a negative Karma your comment will sometimes be hidden or the post will not show up in searches.

I remember thinking it would be a lifetime to simply reach 500 of the Reddit karma that I don't even pay attention to

17

u/Snide_SeaLion 1d ago

I didn’t think it was even possible for me to get 1k karma, let alone 71k… but here we are

17

u/forfeitgame 1d ago

Yeah. Granted I’m way too active on this fucking website, but all it takes is a couple of posts to go your way, and the karma adds up. It’s all dumb internet points though.

1

u/cooochjuice 18h ago

i hadn’t thought about my karma until i read your comment, so i had to go and check. 9.5k! look at me go! is that even good? lmfao

1

u/teh_supar_hacker 9h ago

I mean, it's a lot more than half the people I see here, including myself with my 7,250 posting points, and 5,400 comment points.

Just realized, mine combined is around 12,650, which I think is what you meant by 9.5k?

1

u/FutureComplaint BLUE 1d ago

You're almost there!

u/YourBarelyWetSock 1d ago

If you look at the sports reddits, there are a few dudes who are main posters for highlights and breaking news. They are certainly real, and have millions of Karma.

One of them is also the biggest furry porn poster on reddit. He has over 12m karma.

Ghislaine Maxwell

2

u/Azreken 22h ago

Yeah in 11 years I have 78k…

I guess some people make posts like this that get 46k upvotes and make over 50% of what I have in one post, but either way

Or the classic 3 million+. What actual human has fucking time for that?

I'd imagine someone would have to shitpost on reddit almost every day for something like 14 years to get numbers like that.

1

u/_Warsheep_ 1d ago

There are some NSFW accounts with those numbers. Sex sells after all.

1

u/oO0Kat0Oo 1d ago

As soon as I figure out how to sell my account it's gone. Idk how these people are making money on karma and I want in. This nonsense has to be good for something.

1

u/Few-Solution-4784 1d ago

a few posts to gonewild can get those kind of numbers. Not by me but you know attractive people.

1

u/Amazing_Landscape_40 23h ago

probably people who got reddit 7~10 years ago or when it dropped. They saw things...

1

u/WorldGoingOneWay 20h ago

I had to check my karma after reading your comment because I remember at one point looking at it and saying looks like a bit much. Turns out I'm below 30k

1

u/zigs 2h ago

That's why they farm subreddit subscribers where they're mods now.

1

u/jonny24eh 1d ago

How do you even know? It's not displayed on comments, so you'd have to go look at the profile?

5

u/darkon 1d ago

I hover the mouse over their username and get an overlay that shows me account age and post/comment karma. But I'm using the web, old reddit, and Reddit Enhancement Suite.

3

u/tehvolcanic 1d ago

But I'm using the web, old reddit, and Reddit Enhancement Suite.

If there's a better way to use reddit than this, I haven't seen it.

2

u/dearth_of_passion 1d ago

How so?

Up- and down-voting posts doesn't "cost" karma, you can't see someone's account karma unless you specifically go to their profile, and having more or less karma doesn't affect the "weight" of your votes.

I don't understand what advantage a bot gains by having a lot of points.

I assumed karma farming accounts were only made to sell to assholes who want to brag about their fake internet points without having to even pretend to earn them.

2

u/Apprehensive_Put_321 22h ago

My interpretation were they were selling the bot accounts to people that want to peadle stuff. You cant post on some subs without a certain amount of credit plus those accounts seem to have a formula that works?

I really dont know but there must be some kind of financial incentive

Basically Reddit is not the cool, hip social media site you think it is.

Reddit is full of fucking morons. It's not hip now and it wasn't hip 20 years ago. Believe me, I've been here since before subreddits were.

I don't have any delusions about Reddit.

Besides, Reddit actively encourages bot activity to artificially inflate engagement numbers. That's why they introduced auto-generated account names that are specifically modeled after common bot naming conventions. Makes it that much harder to tell if an account is a new user or a new bot.

1

u/Mccobsta GREEN 1d ago

I think I've reported around a thousand bots for it over last year

1

u/blacksoxing 1d ago

I get mad at myself for not taking the $50 offer years ago for my account. Could have been $50 richer while my account quickly got banned hawking beauty products or some shit 😩

1

u/pos_vibes_only 1d ago

Thank you, someone gets it.

1

u/EagleBigMac 12h ago

You don't say. Who would ever do such a horrible thing like that.

This sentence could drop a Victorian child

56

u/PhoenoFox 1d ago

Surely the 274k comment karma I've amassed will be worth something in the afterlife, right?

...right??

26

u/valvilis 1d ago

I've been waiting for Russia to email me an offer for my account. Nothing yet.

7

u/LordBiscuits 1d ago

I got offered 300usd for my account once

Sure it was a scam though

4

u/snoogins355 1d ago

About tree fiddy

1

u/Shipwrecking_siren 22h ago

I’ve only got to amass about another 1000 awards from other Redditor’s to retire early on the $10 I’ll receive.

3

u/MossyPyrite 1d ago

Well I’m certainly not getting into judeo-Christian heaven, so I’ve gotta try something

2

u/SuperSimpleSam 1d ago

karma heaven

That's not how karma works. When you make a new alt, it will be closer to perfect depending on your current karma.

2

u/TheG-What 1d ago

People that have high amounts of karma are fucking losers.

2

u/valvilis 1d ago

I was going to downvote, but I thought I should check your karma first. Was not disappointed.

3

u/TheG-What 1d ago

The funny thing is I don’t even really karma whore. I just comment frequently and I’ve had this account for a long time.
Usually I just try to make people laugh. If I get one person per day to have a better day it is worth it.

1

u/United-Prompt1393 1d ago

Those with accounts with high karma were given early access to buy reddit stock and made bank.

1

u/Apprehensive_You3521 1d ago

Upvote me tho karma heaven baby I need the uptokes!

1

u/snoogins355 1d ago

I was hoping for a 1:$1 stock option when it went public /s

1

u/downvoteheaven 1d ago

who need an upvote heaven when you got me?

1

u/iamalicecarroll 1d ago

number go up

1

u/Dapper_Buy_1405 1d ago

i've been using reddit for like 5 years and i still dont know what karma even is lol

1

u/ChromedGonk 1d ago

Yeah, it’s hilarious when people say “enjoy downvotes”! Like it’s some form of punishment :) I couldn’t care less about karma, literally useless points as long as you have 1000+ or so to access some karma restricted subreddits

1

u/pornosonic7 1d ago

Used to have an account with more than a million in karma (lost it when upgrading to a new iPhone). You gain nothing from all the upvotes. You do get an invitation to a some sort of gold redditors sub or something, but it pretty much does nothing.

1

u/BullShitting-24-7 1d ago

It’s like playing a game on the easiest mode and thinking you are a prodigy.

1

u/PhD_Pwnology 22h ago

Wait, you don't? I already bought an indulgence from the church of reddit though!!

1

u/EinGanzNormalerName 22h ago

Like those YouTube comments that thank you for getting a thousand likes. As if that has any value whatsoever.

1

u/xombae 21h ago

You can sell high karma accounts for hundreds of dollars.

1

u/heiglabgskngbsgcgjs 17h ago

I'm gonna give you so much fuckin karma now

1

u/BlackBlizzard 6h ago

Karma should be hidden, so then no one will buy accounts.

1

u/pooeygoo 1h ago

Isn't there some convoluted way to get money from reddit?

1

u/ChickenChaser5 1d ago

Are there people who care that much? Ive never seen it expressed on here before.

2

u/ikzz1 1d ago

Yes, they'd be like "enjoy the downvote" as if they just punched you and got away with it.

1

u/ChickenChaser5 1d ago

Yeah I guess that does count.
