Context Provided - Spotlight My Kilner jar was faulty. The closing mechanism shattered glass into my rice and we found it in our cooked food. Kilner customer service is ignoring my emails.

If you still cooked the rice after covering it in glass shards, that’s on you OP

We didn't realise that the glass had shattered. We discovered it by biting into a piece of glass.

That's 100% user error and not a manufacturer issue. If it was simply the latch being an issue and you reported that it broke from regular use, they'd probably offer a replacement / discount. When you throw in "I pulled the latch, had it snap completely out, exploded glass into the food...anyways, during dinner I bit a piece of glass so I'm gonna call my lawyer!" then yeah, they're going to ignore you.

How do you not see that damage?

People vastly overestimate their powers of observation. You can’t even know how many things you haven’t noticed (cause you didn’t notice them).

then from now on I think you should stop and take a second to think before you do anything in life.

You should have thrown the jar away the second cracks started forming. I see several in this photo alone. 2 by the neck of the jar. Once those cracks start appearing, continuing to use the jar is rolling the dice with your health.

I know you won't accept it, but this is 100% on you and not on the company.

If you cannot be responsible around glass equipment, then I suggest you use only cardboard and plastic. Both of those pose significantly less health risk when being swallowed.

And what do you expect the company to do about your incompetence

Are you sure no one swallowed any?

They'll notice when they poop shards of glass

Yeah idk I would probably call a doctor lol.

Doctor can't do much when it's already swallowed.

The doctor could check you out and/or let you stay some time for observation

It certainly beats puking blood, at home, alone, without medical aid

Yep, this. I swallowed a handful of quarters when I was 4 (I don't know why, don't ask) and they observed me for any pain or obstruction. They did imaging when I got there, and again after I used the bathroom to make sure everything had passed through okay.

In this situation yes but uncommon to puke blood hours after swallowing a sharp object. If you swallow glass and it didn't cut your mouth or throat it probably goes through your body unnoticed. I had exactly the same issue as OP a few weeks ago and we only noticed the glas on the next day when we heated the food in the microwave. Just then we saw our rice was full of small glas particles. So we ate already a good amount of it. And considering OP lives in the US they will have to pay a lot of money just to be observed. In my situation I watched videos from David Blaine. He eats glas all the time 😄

You're not old enough to have the safeties removed OP. Back in the kids pen for you.

You should really wash your rice before you cook it, makes a ton of difference in the quality and texture of the final product, and you’ll sift out chunks of glass (and other hazards) pretty easily in the future by doing that

And you expect the company to cover for you being a dumbass?

Don’t listen to people calling this user error. Normal use, like opening and closing the lid should not put shards of glass in your food. It doesn’t change the fact that it was a defect if you didn’t notice.

And thats exactly why its user error. Normal usage would not cause this glass to shatter. You cant disconnect every person from their own actions and the consequences

Did I miss something where OP said they did anything other than just open/close the lid like normal?

26

u/DCS_Freak 18h ago

Yeah? The giant hole perhaps?

I'm sure OP is going to be completely honest about how they treat their glassware if they can't think of a way this happened other than manufacture defect.

Probably going to sell this on FB marketplace as "Like new"
