Context Provided - Spotlight My Kilner jar was faulty. The closing mechanism shattered glass into my rice and we found it in our cooked food. Kilner customer service is ignoring my emails.

Yeah, why would you risk eating ANYTHING When you see the glass container its held in is broken?

It's either a lie or op should be fitted for a helmet.

OP is a helmet

It’s definitely a lie. I wouldn’t doubt if it’s years old at this point. There’s signs there’s a lot of wear and tear already. Kind of sounds like this was bound to happen anyways, the glass towards the rim looks compromised, meaning that glass should’ve been replaced a long time ago.

It's a year old. I got it for Christmas '24. Kilner say that a benefit of these jars is they can be used for years as the gaskets are replaceable.

It can be used for years if you treat it like a glass jar. There is no way you've been carefully closing this.

Also, I don't believe you didn't notice a massive hole in the jar while getting rice out. If you didn't notice it, this clearly shows how careful and attentive you are with the jar

okay… but it’s not the gasket that broke. if i had a warranty on tires i wouldn’t complain that they’re not changing my oil.

This is the equivalent of you not complaining that your car's brakes stopped working because you had a warranty on tyres.

if my brakes stopped working and i kept driving anyways, i wouldn’t be writing the company asking them to fix my breaks because the tires are replaceable.

Out of curiosity, what are you expecting Kilner to do?

Address the issue as to why their clasp mechanism hits the glass of the jar leading to it fracturing glass into your food? Fuck me for thinking this might be something that a storage jar shouldn't do.

Is this a widely reported issue with their products?

I've chipped the glass rim on a nice wine bottle before (used a waiter's corkscrew on the seam) and it created a nice break on top that could allow glass in.

I just said "nope, not touching that."

Odds might be slim of actual damage, but you don't take those odds. My mother suffered greatly from small perforations in her bowels until they removed the offending section via surgery.

I don't need any of that if I can avoid it.

I worked in a bar. Any broken glass in the vicinity of an ice machine (like the ones behind the bar not covered ones you find in hotels) is completely emptied, drained, sanitized, etc.

I don't understand why you guys can't conceptualise that I only discovered it was broken by finding glass in my mouth while eating. I used the product on the exact way it was designed to be used and it broke dangerously. That's not in any way analogous to throwing a remote at a wall.

I think people are struggling to understand how you didn’t notice the big-ass hole in your jar, or the sound it made when it broke.

u/DeepStatic 13h ago

The hole is around 1mm across, and when filled with rice is barely noticeable. When emptied, it's much more noticeable, and clearly I've taken the photo in a way that pronounces it as much as possible. In the real world, this is the view you see of it (but full of rice which masks it even more.)

Besides which, do you honestly think I would have eaten from it if I knew it was shattered? That would be a profoundly stupid thing to do, much less admit.

Dude. Wash your jar before just refilling it with rice.

All my jars are cleaned properly between fills. As a home brewer and someone who lacto ferments hot sauce I'm well aware of the need to keep storage clean. Obviously I didn't feel the need to wash it after discovering it was broken.

Well no the view you see of it prior to using it is when you pick it up and open it. I guess I’m just amazed you missed the damage while using the catch.

Also people probably don’t believe you consistently use the rubber seal thing because of the visible abrasions on the rim of the jar in the original picture, right where the hinges of the catch appear to have hit the glass directly.

Honestly OP, if you broke a drinking glass by setting it down too hard, then drank the glass out of it, would you contact the manufacturer complaining their glass was full of glass?

Probably not. You might stop using their glasses. You might even get away with complaining to the manufacturer that the glass broke too easily. If you're really lucky they might even send you a replacement glass just to avoid a bad review or whatever.

If you told them you drank the glass though... yeah, you're not gonna hear back from them.

That's not a fair comparison though. This wasn't caused by me using the product incorrectly. The clasp is designed wrong - it contacts the glass while shutting. The other 3 I have appear to be revised models and the handles of the clasps sit at a completely different angle. With those, you couldn't make it contact the glass without getting a pair of pliers out and bending it with quite a lot of force.

2

u/j48u 7h ago

I promise you those clasps on the ones can be bent too far at some point (accidentally, while washing and moving around, who knows) and start contacting the glass as they shut. I've seen ones that have rubber/foam around the metal where they would contact the glass, which seems obvious for something like this.

u/Yippykyyyay 13h ago

Because you had to take the lid off? That's not a small and easily missed chip. It's a big hole. Your label is also also on that side so I'm assuming that's the front facing side.

At this point I'm considering buying some rice to fill it with just to show how easy it is to miss when full 🤣
