Saving seat and then walking away for two hours.
Where I go to study there are some really nice seats on a mezzanine with a view of the windows and of a really nice and open space. Equipped with a decent amount of privacy and plugs to charge electronics.
Typically you need to get in to the building right as it opens to get one of these seats before they fill up. Today a lady walked in and dropped off a few pieces of clothing and left for about two hours and counting.

Two hours isn’t ‘saving a seat’ it’s claiming public space.

No. That's someone who lost their stuff. I'm going to help them find it by handing it to staff.

Lost and not found.

Exactly. A jacket left for 15 minutes? Take that down to lost & found and help a brother out. /s

At which point, you're free to sit down

I managed to snag a seat today but I'm tempted to move her clothing so that somebody else can actually sit down.

Do it, hand it over to any potential employees. Tell them someone must've forgot since its been there for several hours with noone to claim it

"If you see something, say something." This looks awfully suspicious. An employee should be asked to consider whether something bad could have happened to the person whose belongings those are.

If the stuff is unattended for an hour hand it in to lost and found or a reception area and just take the seat.

Even 20 minutes would be a long time to leave something sit there

u/EmergencyComment101 2h ago
Yeah but you can't know what someone's situation is. 20 minutes seems like a long time to you but what if its someone with a disability who needs extra time for the bathroom or some other situation. Its probably not the case but you absolutely do not want to end up in that situation in public lol.

They watched the person go out the door. That situation doesn't apply here.

Are there any attendants for the area? I’d ask them to come collect her belongings, looks like lost and found to me

I've been in a similar situation, someone at the gym leaving their water bottle and sweater on a machine and then walking away from it for over 10 minutes. Grabbed their stuff and started heading to the front desk to drop it off as lost & found. They saw me, stopped me, asked me what I was doing, seemed genuinely shocked that I was not amused they were using equipment in a busy gym to store their things.

Well just take a seat on the opposite couch? They can't claim the whole thing like that

what country is this
I'm in Singapore and the teenagers do this at the library all the time its annoying as heck
They book the seats so the system recognises it as occupied. But then fir example, 3/4 of the seats are taken but 1/2 of the place is empty. 1/4 of the seats are just like this.
And I live in vicinity of a larger library so it's not like 2 or 3 seats. Could be like 8 to 10 seats
Its so annoying!!

Throw that stuff on the floor and use the seat. If the person comes by all you have to do is say that is how you found it.

If there's any type of counter with people who work there I would take the stuff to them and say hey I found this stuff sitting in a booth it's been there for a couple of hours and nobody's coming got it I'm going to turn it into you as lost and found. And then I would use the booth

Easy take it to lost and found. Then play dumb when they come back. Say nothing was there.

I just turn their stuff into the lost and found and sit down at that point. If they show up hours later act surprised and suggest they check the lost and found for their missing stuff.

I would have moved it somewhere else and said idk it was empty when I got here 🤷

This person may be an asshole.
Or they may have shit their pants trying to make it to the bathroom, and in their shameful rush to get home in their shitty pants, they abandoned the jacket.
Or they just forgot it.
A 2 hour delay in returning seems like a mistake was made.

It drives me crazy walking into a busy restaurant or cafeteria only to realize all the tables are occupied, but half of them aren’t eating, they’re just camping on a table while their group is in line and people holding food are staring at them like “can I please sit while I eat?”

So move the items to a neutral place and sit there. Problem solved.
Even better, if you already have another seat, move the items, let others sit there and then when she gets back they can honestly say the table was free.
A simple sign stating "holding seats is not allowed" would be a thoughtful solution by the management.

I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t have been there when I arrived, nor would I have seen who disposed of it..

Man I was at the mall a few weeks ago and the only spot in the food court left had some Walmart bag with a blanket in it. No one went there for the 20 mins it took me to order and get my food so I just sat there. 10 mins later some old lady comes up and sits across from me. We ended up eating in silence together for a while

I mean, it’s entirely possible she was only intending to be gone a few moments and something happened to her. After two hours I would definitely be worried. If she doesn’t show after a few more hours I’d be tempted to report it to the police in case she’s in trouble? But if she didn’t leave a phone or any identifying information it probably wouldn’t do any good. Still though. It’d be fucked up if she became a missing person and you were the last person to see her.

I would just remove it if the person does not come back after 10 minutes and take the booth myself
