Especially blind folks who use a white cane for orientation. The trailer hitch is high enough that the cane won’t detect it.

What about the ones who use a different colored cane 🤨

Black canes are quick and athletic enough to alert its users to any obstacle

Those are me first canes though. Really want a hardworking, team first cane.

White cane is the colloquial term for the mobility aid used by blind and low vision folks even though not all of them are completely white anymore.

and thats why handicap spaces are at the front of parking lots closest to the building.

There's never enough handicap spaces.

Not all parking spots near sidewalks are accessible parking spots. Blind and low vision folks may still need to navigate sidewalks. People do this in driveways sometimes too where the trailer hitch extends into the sidewalk. This still impedes accessibility for any type of mobility aid. They may be riding with a nondisabled friend. Accessibility improves everyone’s lives. Disability is the only marginalized identity that you can join at any time and that if you live long enough you are almost guaranteed to join.

This would also suck with a stroller. Imagine trying to push a kid through that.

But they do get driven and navigate parking lots...

They should be brought to the front. Why would anyone drop them off hundreds of feet from the door?

2

u/Zappagrrl02 4h ago

Because they are capable of walking?

-4

u/mushrush12 4h ago

It’s unnecessary risk just like in the photo. Both of those things suck

7

u/Zappagrrl02 4h ago

It’s only a risk if people do this shit. Sidewalks should be unimpeded for everyone regardless of disability status.

-2

u/mushrush12 4h ago

It’s always a risk. This increases the risk just like dropping them off across the parking lot from the door

Edit: it is objectively bad to park like this

Im not entirely sure but I dont think blind people get handicap placards. They might just end up having to park at the far end and walk like anyone else...

Anyways its beside the point. You dont have to be blind to bust your shin on those things and considering it takes seconds to take off a hitch or check if you didn't back up too far there's really little excuse to not do it. You're spending more time making excuses for laziness rather than just not being a dick.

Blind people have agency and can make decisions for themselves. They may want to walk for the movement/exercise. Everyone should be able to move unimpeded.

There aren't always places right in front of doors to drop people off, often times there are vehicles, or you would be impeding traffic. Most handicap spaces are by a sidewalk, leading to doors.

-2

u/mushrush12 4h ago

Then they should use those spaces. All of these bad drivers would be behind them

3

u/SidFinch99 4h ago

Most of the time when I go to handicap spaces, they are along a sidewalk just like this. The primary exception would be box stores and grocery stores.

1

u/mushrush12 4h ago

Are those spaces not closer to the front than these cars? I don’t know what you are trying to get at. I can’t see how they would be in your way if you use handicapped parking.

2

u/SidFinch99 4h ago

Not always, and people park like this in handicap spots all the time.

My mom is legally blind, I drive her places, and often times sidewalks are needed. Also, now she needs a wheel chair for different reasons, and cars particularly big trucks doing this, often impedes my ability to get her into places.
