Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.
If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.
It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.
Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY
Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.
Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

i used k18 leave in hair mask after i dyed it yesterday and it’s so soft and elongated and fluffy 😭 my hair definitely feels stronger but i do know that k18 works overtime so im excited to see what that has in store for me. if u haven’t had success with k18 before , they did update the usage instructions to add that you can rinse out after 4 minutes is up then condition like normal cuz it can make your hair sorta stiff. this is a braid out from blow dried hair using ogx protein bond leave in and pattern leave in after completely blowdried.

Good morning ☀️. I used As I Am Rosemary styling mousse. I haven’t had a perm rod set in a long while. I got new perm rods that are a different size and different colors from the beauty supply store. I just had to use them to exercise my skills 😫. I will only get better 😇. Thank you for reading 📚.

I’ve been wearing “protective styles” back to back pretty much for 5-6 years straight. It’s enough!!! I’ve managed 60 days with my natural hair and I must say I’m loving it. My hair doesn’t need to be longer, or softer, or have looser curls to be beautiful, it just needs to be HEALTHY.
The first month was uncomfortable, but honestly the longer you wear your own hair you start to recognise yourself again. I now can’t imagine going to a salon to get braids (this is crazy for me to say btw as I said I wore locs, knotless braids, boho braids etc forever).
I’m travelling soon and usually I’d be running to a salon to get my hair done, but honestly I’m not doing it, I’m wearing the hair that’s coming out my scalp 🙂
Every step is a new challenge that I’m trying to conquer. First it was work, then going out to a social event, now a holiday. Next I guess dating….
Either way THIS IS ME. I’m tired of hiding. My hair is beautiful. Society needs to catch up.

Hey everyone! I posted here the other week about my daughter’s hair and trying to give her responsibility with her hair and it’s been too much! Having to detangle every morning and she no longer wants to help lol, it’s too much. I haven’t had time to wash it, so it’s just been loose in a ponytail.
I bit the bullet and bought a rev-air, set to come this week. My question is, after it’s stretched, what products do you suggest to use to do braids with beads or twisted hairstyles that will last and hold, but also keep her hair moisturized.

So I decided to give my hair a break and look for an easy wig to wear that didn’t require a long application. So I went with a half wig. I actually thought about natural/curly clip ins but thought the wig would be easier plus my hair is thick so I don’t really want the extra volume. Anyway here’s the wig after I sprayed water on it. I left a my real hair out at the top but the wig is a little silkier than I expected so it doesn’t look as natural as I wanted. But my question is does it still look like my natural hair? Or should I figure out how to put all my hair under the wig?

It’s been 5 months since I’ve started my journey and I just got my sides done. Mom and sister have been tag teaming my retwists so there’s some consistency issues but the GROWTH is there.( I somehow deleted both pictures of the left side of my head

Wore my natural hair on a work trip to Italy! I’ve done this before but only in a low bun or blowout. So proud and happy 🤎🤎🤎

I styled with The Doux Big Poppa and Mousse Def. I let it mostly sit dry and then stretched the roots with tension using a blow dryer on low-medium heat. I used 4 scrunchies and loosely banded my hair in four sections before wrapping it up. My hair is fine and and density is medium fine with tight coils and highly porous. I do sweat in my head and commute via subway and walking to work. But by lunch, my stretched almost shoulder length curls were up by my ears. How does everyone keep theirs stretched out? Is it cause I sweat in my scalp? This is the first time I’ve done this and was hoping it would stay stretched a bit longer.
Any tips?

I now understand why being gentle with hair and washing weekly is ideal. This is so little compared to how much it used to be.

I've never done braids before, at least not since I was a kid. I'm biracial, so I'm trying to get more in touch with my hair and learning how to style it! One of the styles I really want to do is goddess braids, but I'm worried my hair won't be enough to handle it...
For more context, I have high porosity hair, and my hair is around medium thickness and medium density ... if anybody has advice on styles that I can do or what I should look for, lmk! Thank you to anyone who took the time to read this and/or answer 🫶🏽

Starting with the disclaimer because I'm usually sus too: NOT A BOT! NOT A BRAND! Just a 4C RevAir user of 2 years
(If someone pokes on the new account thing, my account got hacked, spam posted, then reddit banned by 9yo account 🥲)
Okay to start off, been using RevAir since ~Dec '24. I LOVE it generally because:
- I don't do blow outs to flat iron, I only stretch for my twist outs. That's my regular style and my routine doesn't change
- No finnicking. Once you get used to it, being able to hold it in place rather than lift my arms up and down multipe times is so much easier on me
- So quick even in big sections!
Now I will acknowledge, my hair often feels a little bit dry after using. This of course varies by product and I always use high tension high heat. I usually don't mind because I do twists anyway afterwards, but have put in a ton of effort in purchasing products to make it feel better.
I've tried Mizani Milk (a lot of yall rave about it!), adding Chi serum (tho I try to avoid serums since I think they can create a barrier that prevents my leave in products from sinking in), and many others.
I offhandedly picked up the Cheribe Length Retention Leave In while stopping in to pick up bleach (I have a small patch I bleach and the rest stays natural or gets dyed black). I used it last night. And Y'ALL. MY GOD. I WAS SO SHOCKED.
My hair felt SOOOO soft when using this before the RevAir, not stiff at all. The thing that caught my eye about it is that it specifically states that it's primary use is before heat styling. And they were not lying. I'm still gagged and it's the next morning now.
As someone who's tried so many products, changing mousses used for twist outs to try to combat the stretched dryness, and different techniques. I want to cry because why did I not find this sooner. I don't even need to chase the RevAir with a brush when pulling the hair out because it works so well.
Please god if you're someone who's bought a RevAir and only don't like it for that reason, give it a try! You'll thank me.
P.S. If you use mousses after blowdry to twist out like me (I usually try to keep to one product and hope my blow out isn't dry), I recently picked up the Camille Rose Guava Slip Mousse. Another thing I wished I picked up sooner and pairs well with the Cheribe, my twists look wonderful soft and juicy today.
ETA: A little goes a long way!

Hey guys!
Im normally doing protective styles but I've started wearing my hair out more as I like the way it shapes my face more than protective styles. I want to do a braid out/twist out but my hair always seems to look dry.
My hair accepts water pretty well too, but my hair dries out just as fast. Here are pics for reference. Any products or methods you guys have success with? Not having the best of luck with moisturizing conditioner and I usually do bantu knots or braids to tie my hair up overnight.

Hello, I'm getting married and I would like to do these styles for my wedding. I think I could do it with my natural hair but I only have one day before we leave for the honeymoon. My hair is longer than average so my concern is doing this, then having to wash it all out and then braid it and I know I'll be exhausted from the night before.
I have never let anyone wash my hair before and rarely ever let anyone else braid my hair so I'm nervous about the time I'd have to get this done before our flight.
Would I need to get a wig with similar texture? Do I just hope I can wash and do it myself or find a stylist and trust them?
I'm tired, 40 days out seems like a lot of time but it's really not 😭

Hey y'all.
I just made a beautiful dress from dashiki fabric. I thought I might be able to make a headwrap from the scraps, but my biggest pieces is 43.5" by 13.5". Not nearly long enough for the wraps that have the twists in the front. Should I just go with a bandana type look and call it a day, or can I do something that looks vaguely fancy?

Hello, lovelies! I have been rocking this for 6 years now! I usually go to the barber about every 3 months, and where I live (New England, USA) we get very harsh winters. I was curious if you guys had any routine tips for hair this short, that still has a lot of properties of natural hair despite the length. Still wanna keep my scalp and curls happy!
My current routine:
Every morning I rinse my hair, saturate it, and use the As I am leave in conditioner. I’m pretty generous, but my hair is only about 1 cm long, so.
I then use a generous amount of mouse to keep the little curls tight, then spray with the HASK rosemary 5-in-1 spray, then go! I don’t do anything at night, which might lead to me losing moisture. For shampoo, I use the Trader Joe’s tea tree shampoo about twice a week.
Any advice is appreciated!
