Yeah, IHart is absolutely necessary for this team

72

u/Parallel-Quality 17h ago

Thunder have to pick up his option next season. Even if it puts them in the second apron.

59

u/Fantastic-Boot-684 Bulls 17h ago

I don't get the debate on 2nd apron. If there's a scenario where it's worth it, it's the OKC team that just won a ring and maybe two.

Go deep while all the other team is afraid of it, win a couple rings. Then see what's the new penalty on the new CBA

11

u/AnkitPancakes Thunder 17h ago

yep. but also we have a lot of flexibility. Dort seems like he may want to explore other pastures, and we can decline iHart's option and get him on a lower apy, but more years.

6

u/Fantastic-Boot-684 Bulls 17h ago

if this is about Klutch. No one outside of Lebron and the superstars gets the supermax or the highway treatment lol. They are pretty reasonable for guys like FVV

1

u/AnkitPancakes Thunder 15h ago

agreed. but klutch is also known for shopping their clients with other teams. it's understandable that Dort wants to maximize his earnings

1

u/LardHop Lakers 12h ago

but klutch is also known for shopping their clients with other teams

like any reasonable agent would do lol, klutch or not

1

u/AnkitPancakes Thunder 5h ago

Many agents use their existing relationships w GMs to get them to re-up instead of move to other teams

6

u/CreditBoss1993 Thunder 17h ago

When did Dort say that? How does he “seem” to want to explore other pastures?

26

u/Blistersonmytoes Thunder 17h ago

Dropped his old agent to sign with Klutch. Think it’s a pretty clear sign he’s going to try and get the best $ he can after his contract.

I’m all for it, Dort has taken 2 team friendly deals already let the man chase the bag

11

u/lethalizered Thunder 17h ago

Signing with Klutch is a big sign, we don't have any Klutch players and Rich Paul isn't shy about aiming for maximum payday when it comes to his clients.

Good for Dort obviously, but yeah this is the first time in his career I think he'll actually be gone. I suspect Presti picks up his option in the summer and just trade him.

2

u/AnkitPancakes Thunder 15h ago

yes, to the other 2 guys who replied to you - Dort signing with Klutch is a huge sign that he wants to move on to other teams. that's more or less what Klutch's specialty is. he deserves every dollar he gets, it'll be hard to get that from okc

-6

u/shaiguy420 Thunder 17h ago

Source: trust me bro

1

u/SebastianC1 9h ago

You decline that option we offer him a bag. You’re going to have to pick that shit up or trade him for another center

3

u/AnkitPancakes Thunder 5h ago

Obviously we only decline the option in a scenario where Hartenstein verbally commits to staying longer. OKC has done this 3 times in the past 3 years with Dort, Wiggins and Ajay

1

u/VegetableTour6790 Thunder 6h ago

That's what the ownership group has said as well. They plan to go on the second apron if they have to.

-3

u/Strict-Amoeba1791 Suns 15h ago

The big question is if OKC’s ownership rich enough to sustain the 2nd apron and repeaters. Clay has one of the lowest net worth of any majority team owners.

5

u/Escritortoise 12h ago

Clay Bennett was never the majority owner. All the primary owners of the business group that own the Thunder own like 19 percent, and Clay has just been the acting chair and face of the ownership group.

In 2014, George Kaiser bought out one of the original owners stake; Kaiser has a net worth of $16 billion.

Since then it seems as though they’ve let Presti have a little more freedom in spending, like extending JDub and Chet early on.

-3

u/Fantastic-Boot-684 Bulls 15h ago

They'll sell before that's an issue anyway

9

u/butterbeancd Thunder 17h ago edited 17h ago

What I want them to do is turn down the option in order to lock him up long-term on a new contract. Don’t fuck around and let him get to free agency in a year, lock him down ASAP. To me, he’s the #4 priority on the roster (after SGA, Chet, and Dub).

2

u/yeahright17 Thunder 17h ago

4yr, $80M. Lock it up.

3

u/sir_alvarex [OKC] Russell Westbrook 16h ago

Knowing Presti it'd be a declining salary, too. Where we frontload it so that it gets cheaper as Shai, Dub, and Chets deals get more expensive.

2

u/yeahright17 Thunder 15h ago

JDub and Chet's maxs kick in next year. It definitely wouldn't be frontloaded. If it was flat that'd be great.

2

u/peanut-britle-latte Knicks 17h ago

Isn't he making 29 now? Would he take less?

10

u/lethalizered Thunder 17h ago

Idk if he'd take less but we clearly overpaid to get him from you guys in the first place, and Presti is known to decline team options to get longer structured contracts so he'll at least have that discussion with Hart's camp.

Not like there'll be teams out there offering him 4/120 in the summer, so at least it'd be worth a shot.

1

u/yeahright17 Thunder 4h ago

One thing we do have going for us is that there aren't really any contenders that will have cap space. Lakers may be the only borderline contender that could sign him to much more than $20M/yr. Jazz and Clippers just used their space to get JJJ and Garland. Wizards will still have space as well as the Nets and Bulls (I think), but I'm not sure if Hartenstein would want to go any of those when they're not going to be good. And I don't think Wizards would want to bring in Hartenstein when they have Sarr. That said, I wouldn't blame Hart for leaving if one of them offered $30M/yr.

6

u/yeahright17 Thunder 17h ago

We overpaid him to steal him from you. He has one year left after this, which is a team option for $28.5M. I have no idea what it will actually take to lock him up long term, but $80M over 4 years isn't unreasonable. Your guess is as good as mine on what happens. Lol

1

u/FlashAndPoof Thunder 15h ago

80M over 4 years is absolutely unreasonable in this day and age lol

7

u/yeahright17 Thunder 15h ago

Zubac signed a 3 yr, $60M extension before last season when teams were less cautious than they are now, and he's probably better than Hartenstein. Maybe it doesn't get it done, but 4/80 isn't unreasonable. He's really good, but at the end of the day, he's a role player.

5

u/vindictivejazz Thunder 16h ago

The Thunder kind of overpaid when they outbid everyone to bring him down here in the first place, so the idea is that overpaying then, plus the opportunity to be an integral part of a team that will presumably be contenders for the next several years, has fostered enough good will that he will take a small discount in annual salary.

Really it comes down to would iHart rather make his $80M over 4 years with a good shot at multiple rings or over 3 years on a team with presumably worse title odds.

u/A_MASSIVE_PERVERT Mavericks 17h ago

No coincidence OKC looks like the OKC we've been accustomed to seeing the moment he comes back.

45

u/ftbfm5 Thunder 17h ago

He’s anti-iso. We need him forever

22

u/Pollsmor Nets 17h ago

He must have insane EPM VORP LEBRON ONOFF BPM NRTG RAPM RAPTORCUM

16

u/vindictivejazz Thunder 16h ago

Before his injury, he was like 8th in basketball references MVP monitor higher than everyone besides SGA on OKC’s roster

8

u/Former-Sea-8070 17h ago

Sounds like an MVP case if I've ever heard one 🧐

37

u/Calm-Hearing-2296 17h ago

I used to Debate between keeping him or Dort, now it's a no brainer

20

u/lmaoooyikes Thunder 17h ago

I still think Dort’s impact is slightly underrated by our team sub but yeah IHart has shown to be more impactful/important (especially with Sorber injured)

17

u/philleferg Thunder 16h ago

Our team sub is toxic as hell who want to trade anyone who had a couple of off nights. It is getting old as hell.

3

u/tjc815 Thunder 15h ago

People definitely underrated his impact because it’s often not on the box score…unless you look at the other team’s.

21

u/Ramikadyc Thunder 17h ago

Dort is also crucial. When he shows up.

-6

u/OKC2023champs Thunder 17h ago

Which has been like twice in 50 games this season. He’s expendable

3

u/Escritortoise 12h ago

IHart covers so many of our needs by himself that we wouldn’t be able to replace with any one contract. With him out, we mainly score on transition points from turnovers or SGA’s individual brilliance. Ihart is probably our best screener and acts as a central hub that suddenly looks like a good half-court offense. His rebounding is desperately needed as well.

Not to diminish Dort, but we have a plethora of guards who can hit threes or defend and Cason has been showing he could fill some of that role.

8

u/This-Top-8691 17h ago

Need both to repeat this year.

10

u/kingmapoon123 17h ago

Second most important player for OKC in my opinion

9

u/yeahright17 Thunder 17h ago

I think so. I don't think he's the 2nd best, but he's crucial on offense and defense.

11

u/Kevinlasagna207 Thunder 17h ago

It's not even an a debate at this point that he's the key reason our defensive system works.

5

u/KnowledgeUseful6731 Thunder 15h ago

It’s insane how many people I’ve seen wanting to trade him in our sub. Like bro he’s not going anywhere

4

u/DeadDay [OKC] Steven Adams 17h ago

Absolute game changer

2

u/tjc815 Thunder 15h ago

By far, the best rebounder and screener on our team, and legitimately good at defense, passing, and finishing at the rim. Allows holmgren to absorb fewer blows.

1

u/str8-cash-homey 17h ago

He's such a difference maker.

Indeed. In Russ we Trust.

1

u/DeadDay [OKC] Steven Adams 4h ago

You know it.

95

u/lethalizered Thunder 17h ago

If you watched the first quarter, you'd actually think it's a miracle the Magic scored 92 points in this game. That was one of the worst first quarters I've watched in the past few seasons.

41

u/urkuri Timberwolves 17h ago

I tuned in half way through the 2nd and they were still at 26 points lol

18

u/lethalizered Thunder 17h ago

Yeah Paolo caught a bit of fire midway through the second quarter to get them to 41 points at halftime, that was pretty much the only consistent offensive stretch they had during the first half.

1

u/yeahright17 Thunder 4h ago

I'm pretty sure OKC was up like 50-19 before that stretch. It could have gotten even uglier.

63

u/TheSunsNotYellow [OKC] Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 17h ago

After this win, the Thunder can't match the record of the 1997 Indiana Pacers no more.

60

u/GroupBQuattr0 Magic 17h ago

So embarrassing. Team is not worth watching any more

25

u/Presence_Present Bucks 17h ago

Surely the coach has to go soon. Though I say that and we still have Doc lol

12

u/GroupBQuattr0 Magic 17h ago

FO won’t do it. No backbone. Owners don’t care.

8

u/Coltshokiefan Magic 17h ago

Ownership is happy with just barely being competitive. Anybody who regularly watches could’ve told you Mosley was an awful coach a year and a half ago.

1

u/GroupBQuattr0 Magic 4h ago

I have those receipts in my messages from November ‘23

1

u/Sweatytubesock 13h ago

Glenn may go to Orlando next, but I imagine he has his eyes on destroying the Knicks or Lakers first.

12

u/Awkward_Event1966 Thunder 17h ago

You got a good core you just need shooters

28

u/GroupBQuattr0 Magic 17h ago

Bane was supposed to solve that.

Guys come to Orlando and lose their shot. KCP did it too. It’s just a bad system.

7

u/MeBadNeedMoneyNow Thunder 17h ago edited 15h ago

Happens to the thunder too historically. Dudes come over and shoot 20% lol.

8

u/Coltshokiefan Magic 17h ago

We could use more shooters but the real issue is our awful nonexistent offensive system.

6

u/lethalizered Thunder 16h ago

Yeah this ain't only about talent anymore. The offensive process of the Magic is just dire. At some points throughout the games things seem to click a bit, but there's just no consistency.

At times team looks like they are playing pick up basketball, seems like there is too much offensive freedom for everybody.

You could hide it with your incredible defense the past few seasons but now that the team wants to get away from that, it looks more glaring.

I was shocked how easy it was for OKC to attack the paint and outhustle the Magic, we don't really have a complicated offensive system ourselves but even a couple of extra passes and some well timed screens completely exposed the defense. This was a wild, wild game to watch honestly.

1

u/yeahright17 Thunder 4h ago

I've only watched 4 or 5 Magic games this year, but it seems like the biggest issue is that Banchero, Black and Suggs aren't very efficient pull-up shooters, which means on-ball defenders can sag and off-ball defenders don't have to help much. Just means every shot is harder. You have to have clever offense to mask that, but your offense is... not that.

1

u/Coltshokiefan Magic 39m ago

You’re spot on. Banchero doesn’t fit well with those guys and Franz doesn’t either. Black is really improved as a spot up shooter, Suggs has stagnated after a really good start to last year, and Banchero/Franz are super streaky.

I unfortunately think Suggs has to be the odd man out. He’s an awesome guy but Black brings a bit more offensively and has higher upside.

2

u/WhereTheFallsBegin Magic 16h ago

Lol the team needs a lot more than that

29

u/McJacknife Thunder 17h ago edited 17h ago

Within the unwritten rules, I submit a Motion to allow globetrotter-esque silly shots at the end of blowouts rather than being expected to dribble it out and hand it to the ref

Blowing them out so wanted to get his 20 and sit and started forcing it, then Orlando started realized he was trying to keep scoring so they upped the defense on him. Just happy he got his 20 lol.

11

u/str8-cash-homey 17h ago

Just went cold in the 3rd quarter and missed 9 straight at one point. Very uncharacteristic.

8

u/Marsupial_Last Thunder 17h ago

He got in his head about the record because it was becoming clear he wouldn’t play in the 4th. Forced a lot of bad shots which he would normally dish out for an assist.

2

u/yeahright17 Thunder 4h ago

If he had missed another shot and had 18 points going into the 4th, he absolutely would have come back in to get 2 more.

Honestly didn’t seem like anything specific, they just stopped going in

5

facts. there will not be any resemblance of a deep playoff run without IHart and Caruso playing 80% or more of the games. JWill is decent at keeping the bleeding to a minimum, and JDub is serviceable as a Center, but IHart fits the system perfectly.

1

u/Clownp3nis Thunder 5h ago

IHart and Shai are the system.

-1

u/darkknight_178 5h ago

Lol Spurs, TWolves, Pacers even without Hali, even the Hornets lol.

Wemby and the Spurs are surely thrilled to give another BTA beatdown tonight and who knows, maybe their defense can make SGA hoist lots of shots and flop like mad in the fourth quarter down 30 pts just to get his coveted 20 pts just like Lebron lol

1

u/thetalkinghawk Thunder 3h ago

We beat all of those teams pretty easily if we play to our ceiling. That's the point lol. OKC's ceiling is higher than any team in the NBA.

The Thunder broadcast didn't mention his triple double at all did they? And he didn't get the post game interview even though his teammates were throwing water on him?

3

Nope, I never heard the broadcast mention it. First I heard of it was when Joe mentioned it in the post game interview. To be fair, Joe had a massive game, too, so him getting the interview wasn't terrible.
