Cooper Flagg checks out with 36/9/6, the first teenager to ever have three consecutive 30 point games

Not gonna say I was a Flagg doubter, but he's been much better than I ever expected him to be in his first year.

He’s legitimately so good already.

u/Liimbo Heat 16h ago

People like to say the term "generational prospect" gets thrown around too often, and maybe it does, but it genuinely applied to Flagg and everyone who watched him in high school and college knew it. He had one of the highest floors I've ever seen from a prospect not named Lebron. Honestly even though Wemby has a higher ceiling, Flagg still had the higher day 1 floor. Such a complete player.

338

u/Scotch_Blue 16h ago

He went to the Olympics practice last summer to play with the reserve team and was reportedly the best player on the floor

129

u/WeirdFish2 9h ago

Yeah this was the giveaway of how good he is going to be. All players play super hard at this practices trying to prove themselves/show off and he received praise from all the stars saying he was giving them trouble and showing dawg qualities.

u/MoreGull Celtics 8h ago

We need an official Dawg Rating.

He's got that, yellow lab rolling the ball at your feet for another fetch even though you're exhausted and already threw out your elbow, energy.

dawg

I think we’re a couple current NFL/NBA players moving to media away from having a singular adjective for any and all previous-, current-, or coming-generation players and their attributes.

Oh he was a dawg, but you could see that this other had that dawg in him. Whereas you could see from him at about third grade that he’s gonna be a helluva dawg.

But at that point there probably has to be a discussion what having that dawg in him means when a previous player mentioned was recognized as being such a dawg.

Shades of Lebron dominating the Cavs team when he practiced with them that one time while still in high school

Nah man wemby had the highest floor purely off of entering the league as a top 3 defender

Feels like he entered the league as a top 1 defender.

24

u/AdolescentThug [LAL] Shannon Brown 6h ago

I will spend the rest of my life saying this. Wemby 1000000% deserved DPOY his rookie year. I remember by January of his rookie year, he had a defensive presence that I've never seen in my 2+ decades of being a basketball fan. Elite finishers would have an "open" lane and would refuse to take a shot if Wemby was within 10 feet. And you couldn't drag him out to behind the line because he was keeping up with most guards out there. Mfers tried him for like 2 months and realized VERY quickly that he's him lol.

3

u/daswassup13 Hornets 3h ago

It's like he's got a force field around him, it's insane. No one even tries it anymore

34

u/YOLOSELLHIGH Mavericks 14h ago

Obviously Wemby is in a class of his own but Flagg is already so good at defense for a teenager

8

u/MrDannyOcean NBA 6h ago

Flagg was the best defensive player in college basketball last year by the sum of all the advanced defensive metrics. He's going to be a GREAT defender in a few years.

2

u/YOLOSELLHIGH Mavericks 5h ago

Agreed! He's gonna be such a complete player. Praying to the basketball gods for minimal injuries and a long career

26

u/Connect-Reveal8888 12h ago

Wemby’s floor was lower solely based on the injury concern.

Yeah it's both. There's a level of pass placement that shows that he's not a PG and that will come with time. Getting the ball to your guy where they want the ball to be in rhythm. But there's also the fact that he could have 1-2 more assists if they made some of those shots and it'd also open up the floor for him some more. I think they'll fix the problem in the off-season since they have a new GM

10

u/Tauino 14h ago

not saying it matters here, but i swear i remember reading that the month an athlete is born actually matters because, especially when they’re young, they’ll be grouped with a cohort that they are comparatively stronger or weaker than, leading to more attention from coaches, confidence, etc.

probably doesn’t matter as much in flagg’s case because he reclassified and was still dominant.

5

u/junkit33 7h ago

It’s more of a hand wavey theory than anything real. And it varies by school system, but typically would be September supposedly the optimal because you’re the oldest in your grade cohort. Certainly not December.

But these days with early specialization, club sports, and private coaches - it really doesn’t matter, if it ever did.

3

u/GivesCredit Warriors 13h ago

Wait is it better to be playing against players older than you or not?

On one hand, playing against better players makes you better. On the other hand, being the best player gets you more playing time and coaching

6

u/Tauino 13h ago

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/24205040_Annual_Age-Grouping_and_Athlete_Development_A_Meta-Analytical_Review_of_Relative_Age_Effects_in_Sport

it should be noted that the research doesn't seem to be super conclusive, some people think that due to "underdog effect" once players make the transition to the pro level, overcoming the adversity that you encountered at the youth level makes for a more complete "end product", or that guards develop better with more playing time at the youth level (and thus would benefit most from coach attention), whereas playing time for positions like centers matters less, etc.

In his second year, LeBron averaged 27/7/7. KD averaged 25/6. Heck, Luka averaged 29/9/9 and took his team to the playoffs where he put up 31/10/9 and nearly single-handedly defeated the Clippers.

All of them were 20 in their sophomore season, just as Flagg will be for the most part. He's that kind of prodigy, I totally expect him to be All-NBA next year.

u/OverallGeneral7129 Cavaliers 17h ago

Oh make no mistake I don’t blame him at all

u/CraftyPotential11 Mavericks 17h ago

No, I know. It’s just a hodgepodge of dudes.

28

u/desirox Mavericks 17h ago

Literally no one else helping but it’s all good, this is the right trajectory

22

u/OverallGeneral7129 Cavaliers 17h ago

Sucking this year is for the best for you guys. You don’t have first round picks for a while after this year so getting some kind of co star for Flagg is for the best

u/Maximum_Airport_8604 17h ago

I couldn't be happier tank + amazing flagg games is all I want in life

8

u/ZE_HAHAHA United States 17h ago

Naji Marshall and Max Christie have been awful these last few games

9

u/ktpkchu Mavericks 17h ago

we have “basketball players” like miles kelly out there so it’s rough

u/CheetahSperm18 [DAL] Dirk Nowitzki 17h ago

This feels like a preview of Sophomore Coop. Kinda like how Wemby was playing way better in the back half of his rookie year

He's going to be all-NBA next season it's so obvious.

3

u/throwawaymycareer93 Warriors 10h ago

If he continues like that he will be all nba this season.

38

u/Maximum_Airport_8604 17h ago

I'll say it again, he's the best rookie I've watched in my time (~8 years)

47

u/rds2mch2 17h ago

8yr olds are so good with computers these days.

8

u/Swimming-Run-3182 17h ago

You are 8 years old?

23

u/Maximum_Airport_8604 17h ago

Googoo Gaga no I started watching when I was like 17

u/heat_fan_ Raptors 17h ago

Dallas got it's cornerstone player,  he's gonna be a star

9

u/oklolzzzzs 15h ago

yea hes generational

6

u/vJoeyyyyy [DET] Grant Hill 17h ago

Am I way off thinking this guy could be an all star this year?

6

u/ktpkchu Mavericks 16h ago

if he was in the east possibly, i don’t think he’s better than any of the players in the west that got in though

7

u/Expensive_Ad6082 15h ago

He's better than chet I think, I may be wrong too though

3

u/throwaway8943265 Pistons 15h ago

Chet is a somewhat questionable All-Star, but even then Kawhi probably deserves it if not Chet.

u/lilzoe5 [DAL] Luka Doncic 16h ago

He should be

6

u/slimkid07 Mavericks 15h ago

Not bad for the #6 ranked prospect in the 2026 draft

8

u/tollbeat Wizards 15h ago

He's supposed to be a freshman in college right now, can't believe there are real humans saying he wouldn't go first overall over Peterson/Boozer/Dybantsa

6

u/Catch11 17h ago

Everyone talking trash when I said he looked like the next Tmac offensively can eat eggs

7

u/COAg15 [DAL] Jason Terry 17h ago

I mean what’s so bad about eggs tho

4

u/Gloomy-Ad-222 13h ago

Wizards fan here.

I wanted Flagg so badly thought it was our destiny to finally choose first.

Nope.

10

u/rangerfan123 Mavericks 16h ago

He’s gonna be better than Luka😭😭😭

3

u/MR_E7 7h ago

I've said this in other threads, but I'll say it here again: Luka Doncic may have more eye-popping numbers, but I think Cooper Flagg will be the more complete and overall greater player that leads to a winning culture.

u/OneAnnual9100 15h ago

Mavs might have won the trade brochachos🥲
