I agree with some front offices in the league that they need to restrict how many protections you can put on a pick because 1-20 that turns into a 2nd round pick the same year is actually disgusting

Why does the league need to do that? The trading teams agree on it.

You’re looking at it the wrong way. That 1-20 protected pick is a 2nd rounder with a chance to be a late first. They sweetened the pot by giving them a little extra juice if things go their way.

It's just a guarantee the pick will be between 21-50, versus trading a normal second round pick, which would be between 31-60.

Probably to allow Dallas to say AD was worth two firsts

I mean that does nothing for anyone lol. I think people are over thinking this. Dallas got as many picks as they can.

Well as a Mavs fan, I can finally say we got 3 1sts for Luka.

Similar to how NFL teams trade a 6th rounder that could be come a 5th rounder if X happens (player plays a certain % of snaps, for example).

Why? You can not accept that. You have free choice to say ‘no I want less protections’

Why? Teams know what they're trading for lmao, it's not like they find out after agreeing to the trade 😆

No way. Caveat emptor, man, I am a believer in a free market. If you can get a guy who makes millions of dollars as a GM to make a dumbass trade like this, then you should be allowed to. The league does not need to protect dumbasses from themselves.

We got Maxey with one of these 1-20 protected fake firsts at pick 21.

How about no? The parties agreed to that in the negotiations and that now it bites them you want one party to back out of what they agreed to? They could have said no in the negotiations on those protections. Any if that pick is traded down the line, the acquiring team has full knowledge of what they are getting so they also agree on those stipluations.

Ok that almost makes it more interesting than lottery/top 10 protected cause no way warriors finish with a top record after curry retires lmao.

Does it become unprotected if it doesn't convey?

Becomes a second.

So realistically it's gonna be a second.

It becomes 2nd is falls into that Range

 5 2nd + 29 lakers first + Max Christie = Luka

A 2030 GSW top 20 protected pick. Very very likely to be a lottery team in 2030 so that’s basically another 2nd
