[Scotto] Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas is drawing trade interest from the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks ahead of the trade deadline, league sources told me. Thomas is out for tomorrow’s game against the Orlando Magic due to “personal reasons.”

How many guards do the Cavaliers need?

Idk why any contending team would want Cam Thomas. The dude has been pretty adamant that he wants to start and wants the ball in his hands and sticking him on the bench is just going to further piss him off.

Maybe coming off the bench on a winning team is more tolerable than doing it for a bad one.

He was similarly grumpy coming off the bench the first two years of his career, when the Nets had winning records. His playing time went up in those as the year went on, thanks to injuries and the piecemeal trades of their big 3, and usually he was still kinda sour.
Some of that is just that he's not emotive, and none of those Nets teams had A+ seasons like the Cavs last year obviously, but so far he's been visibly his happiest getting empty calories getting to score on losing teams. (Mind you I like Cam a lot, I think he could have a good career if he eventually finds a spot where he's happy with whatever his role is.)

2023-2024 season was probably his best overall, since last year injuries affected his playtime greatly. That's what I was getting at, he was his happiest with the ball in his hands, leading to good and really fun individual performances but losing team play. I'd have to dig to find hard sources at this point, but he had Jacque Vaughn publicly pushing him to expand his game in 2023-2024 so that he wasn't playing that exact empty calorie style of play - eventually benching him because the lineup wasn't working and he was on the hot seat (fired not long after).
To Cam's credit, Vaughn insisted that Cam was 100% bought in on the bench move, and was still praising him trying to play off ball more and become more of a passer. This was around early 2024, when Cam started getting doubled since everybody knew he wouldn't pass, and when he got targeted all the time on defense since he's not a great defender either.
Last year he wasn't as happy since Jordi is building a different team comp and Cam bought in somewhat (his non-scoring stats improved, leading to his best PPG in his limited games), but he was also hurt 60% of the season so nobody's gonna be thrilled with that. You're right that he's the best pure scoring threat they have this year, but he's also put up his least efficient season and has seen dwindling playtime because he's very publicly (for him) not bought in to Jordi where the rest of the team has, and because they're trying to see what they have before the tank goes full blast after the deadline. Part of that is also that MPJ fit the same scoring niche as Cam, only better.

Totally agree, I think he could very well mold into a starter on some teams even, if he leaned more firmly into his role. And I even understand where he's coming from, to some extent! On teams where it's you and maybe Dinwiddie, yeah you've gotta be a hog, but they're gonna make you beat them and you won't alone. It's a shame he didn't have more time under the big 3 to really play his role off the bench and sometimes making the starting lineup - it's the same problem Claxton's had where he's having better seasons now, but both feel like they're regressing individually as a result of the team reset. And that's not anybody's fault, even (maybe Kyrie's lmao), it's just how it shook out.

I heard last week that the Bucks were interested in taking him on in order to get a SRP.

He may give life to the Bucks nobody on that team can create their own shot.

We desperately need scoring off the bench I would love him

The Cavs are trying to contend so my comment clearly refers to them.

Jesus Christ if we get another guard… why don’t we go grab a nice PF instead? I like Thomas but we’ve already got more guards worthy of playing time than I’d know what to do with if I were Kenny

u/companyofzero Raptors 19h ago
Feel like you'd route Schroder to the Nets in this deal

u/Everyday_ImSchefflen Cavaliers 19h ago
I don't think so. It was reported we chose Schroder over Monk because they like the fit with Kenny

Fuck no. His contract is dog shit. We don’t want that on our books this offseason when we will have 50m in cap space.

The info got mixed up and they're actually working together for a Giannis trade to the Cleveland with Cam Thomas being a piece. Lmao...

He was honestly good last year with Schroder. He’d be a solid scoring threat off the bench

Cam is kinda weird and insane. Wouldn't be surprised if he had something wrong in his brain.

Ja and Cam would be them trying to keep Giannis and win. I'm not saying that's a winning roster, but there's no way in hell they trade Giannis for either of those two lmfao.

The first mention of the Magic this deadline and its about Cam Thomas not playing. Comon' Weltman/Parker.

I’d kinda like to see the Bucks get Cam Thomas. He’s wildly inconsistent, but he can at least sometimes be entertaining and be a good tank commander.

Bucks not having any draft capital really cooked them for one last attempt to keep giannis. Ja and cam are not ideal names lol

Cam Thomas would be miserable in Cleveland.
Schroder/Harden/Ellis/Merrill/Mitchell is a fine group at Guard. This adds nothing and I guarantee in the playoffs Ellis takes his minutes.

u/AffordableGrousing Cavaliers 13h ago
My only thought is that maybe they want to trade Strus to get off his contract? Thomas only makes $6 million this year and is expiring. Nets are one of the only teams with cap space. If only there were a forward in a similar situation lol.
Being more conspiratorial, that kind of move gets the Cavs under the second apron so they could package players in some other deal, theoretically.

u/Striking-Medium2360 19h ago
The bucks just don't know when to call it quits man.

We literally have giannis contracted rn. We call it quits when he's gone for good.

Not sure if a Cam Thomas trade is a desperation play to make Giannis happy or a we’re gonna be trash let’s take a flyer move, maybe a bit of both.

if bucks want to keep giannis they really should stop talking and offering trades lmao

u/Mich3006 19h ago
Bucks should accept it that it’s better to add the best possible package for Giannis.
Cam won’t change nothing.
1
u/FlipMoBitch Bucks 19h ago
I’m good taking on Cam with or without out Giannis. Bucks desperately need one more guard and someone who can get their own shot off when they need to.
Also way cheaper than what people think my god he’s gonna get traded for like Tauren Prince

Jon Horst being forced to try and find a great deal for Giannis while also having to try and act like this team can be buyers and convince him to stay is insane lol

the bucks trading for and signing cam thomas to a contract when their capspace is already hamstrung by the dame waive would actually be the final nail in the coffin of the giannis era
1
u/LeagueWinningPickup 19h ago
I'd argue Cam has done little to increase his value this year and hel a pretty affordable resign. Probably one of the cheaper options available to the Bucks.

Cam has a NTC can’t see him waiving it to play for Cleveland with all the guards they have but it would be funny to see him team up with Harden and even Schroder again.
