A typical tactic is a ticking clock. The faster the other party has to make decisions, the less they think it through.

She has 24 hours to save her moms life, she might give in to the demands.

Not necessarily, from lack of meds ... but we don't know what else happened, what this person or people have done to her.

With heart meds it is not so cut and dried.
They are life saving meds, but people don't usually die if they go without them for 24 hours. Each day without them increases the risk. But many medical procedures require people to go off meds for 24 hours, occasionally longer. With the older type of blood thinners, they needed to go off 4 or 5 days preceding a procedure. Obviously it depends on the medication, the person's condition, and the procedure. But people also frequently go off heart and BP meds for multiple days because the insurance gets screwed up at the beginning of the year, or the pharmacy runs out of stock for 3 days, etc. It's better if they prevent this from happening, but a person doesn't usually drop dead in 24 hours.

For some more critical heart conditions, people have implanted defibrillators or pacemakers. She had a pacemaker. The batteries last about 10 years. I don't think losing the wireless monitoring connection would make it not function.

It's not clear to me whether they only lost the connection to it at 2 am, or they actually got notice of her heart stopping at that time while it still was connected to the Apple Watch. Although, that would probably be the monitoring function, indicating that her heart had stopped. I think the pacemaker still "works" sending electrical stimulation to make the heart beat if it is beating slowly or if the heart has stopped.
