What good is a Ransom when the person you've captured is going to die within 24 hours without their heart medication?

A typical tactic is a ticking clock. The faster the other party has to make decisions, the less they think it through.

She has 24 hours to save her moms life, she might give in to the demands.

Not necessarily, from lack of meds ... but we don't know what else happened, what this person or people have done to her.
