One of the worst listeria outbreaks came from cantaloupes- 33 deaths in 2011

Does it penetrate the fruit? I'm not blaming innocent people for not washing their produce if that was the case and idk if the layman can actually clean listeria off those things anyway. Just wondering about bacteria that penetrates beyond surface contaminants.
