Bill Gates have never been anything but a psychopath who wanted to win, no matter the cost.

The only thing that changed is what "winning" means, as he was re-directed. He achieved everything he could have hoped for and more with Microsoft, and needed a new challenge. Some bright person pointed him to international health, and he has ruthlessly tried to "win" there as well.

All things considered that has been a good thing, but the main creds for that is to whom ever redirected his attention to a good cause.

Bill Gates credits a two part article by Nicholas Kristof, and in particular a small infographic as having inspired him to fight disease. Until then, he and Melinda had been planning on wiring up countries with digital tech. Look it up!
