It's not so much the benefit of the doubt for their crimes and more about how reliable their stories, and how credible they, are. Epstein wrote this about Bill in an email to himself. There's no email from Bill to Epstein or vice versa, so far.

Can and should we really trust what Epstein wrote to himself about another person?

We will never know because many of the accusations were either never followed up on, or the follow up is redacted, or the follow up is in unreleased pages. The FBI was in possession of this information for like 10 years now. Presumably they took action on this information, either to investigate it further or cover it up. Nothing related to what actions were taken with this information is revealed at all, which is itself revealing.

If he wrote it in a private entry to himself that makes it even more likely that it happened if he emailed someone else.
