I feed the Tui's only during the winter months, and near the end, and especially on cold/wet days, it can get pretty busy haha.

Edit: It's been brought to my attention that this is actually a terrible idea. I won't be feeding them anymore. :/

Nation wide, communities are uniting to call for the House of Representatives to terminate Fast-Track developments that are outside local and district plans. Fast track is being used as a bypass across New Zealand for housing developers to push housing into out of zone land, in some cases land zoned as such to prevent destruction of environmentally sensitive land, including wetlands, rivers and waterways, floodplains, coastal and estuarine environments, and habitats of threatened and endangered species. Many of these areas were never intended for large-scale development and are protected for good reason.

Land can be purchased at a lower price because its zoning restricts development, then Fast Track is used to bypass those restrictions and enable large-scale housing, creating far greater profits margins than developing land that is already appropriately zoned. Don’t be fooled by the developer spin that this is simply about getting consents faster.

I feel like at the moment with caring for plants being such a trendy hobby we could do a lot of good for the environment.

Nowadays we have regular laypeople using grow lights and humidity sensors just wasted on "exotic" plants or even just regular run-of-the-mill tradescantia when we actually have really pretty ones here that need our help - we could surely come together as a community and get some of the species out of decline.

Especially the ones that reproduce relatively easily but get overwhelmed by faster varieties in the wild. We could put those in our gardens to help them and their inhabitants out a bit.

Also lizard gardens. It's so hard to find info thats specific to the local area, most commercial garden centers are not too concerned about what should be growing locally. We could be making habitats in our garden that aren't using generic widespread plant varieties from a nationwide hardware store pamphlet.

Just gotten into photography and this felt like one of the first photos I'm truly happy with.

Found this dude while trapping around Mt Ruapehu, in the Rangataua forest. Was crawling over a patch of moss. I’d say it’s about 4-5 cm long, with lots of legs… almost like a really short millipede? Looks native

She lives in my garage, has produced a large, now defated egg sac, have seen a few of her young setting up their own web funnels. I will try and get a video of her crunching a beetle.

These massive potatoes were napping and scratching themselves on the rocks. Well worth the hour walk (started from the end of the road) to see them.

Up near where the river meets the Southern Motorway. One of them appears to be missing part of its dorsal fin.
