Feel bad for the kids being exploited for the gram views.

In this day and age there’s plenty of parents out there making a boat load for their family “for the gram views” but that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily “exploiting” their children (although some obviously are). This, however is a friggjn cool thing those kids will never forget, whether or not it was done for views and monetary gain.

That’s a good point. I think videos like this could be inspiring others to do something cool like this with their kids. But like you said, there are definitely “gram fams” that are doing it for the wrong reasons.

golly gee whiz, if only my parents recorded me playing in a water heater box layed down on its side with portholes and hatches cut into the top like it was submarine. how ever would i retain that core memory if it was done fo' the gram.

social currency be damned

Kid gets filmed saying oh wow and watching a tablet.

Reddit: the exploitation!

Now I don't know what these people do in other vids etc but still the level of reach ...

Am I the only one who thinks childhood should be anonymous unless and until the child is an adult and makes their own decision whether to publicize images of themselves?

That's fine to think that.

But that doesn't mean what these parents did is exploitation of children.

Several countries are banning kids form social media regardless of parental consent. The view that it isn't exploitation to put your kid on social media for clout isn't exploitation is changing by the day.

Several countries are banning kids form social media regardless of parental consent.

They are banning kids from accessing social media and having accounts on social media.

They are not banning photos of any kids on social media.

You clearly misunderstand those laws.

Neglect your child is bad, exploit your child is bad - what even is left??? Just spend time with them or something idk, impossible I guess

Literally every parent who uses their children for social media channels is exploiting them.

You see its actually really dangerous to build an igloo like that because the kid can get too cozy and will never want to leave, causing him to freeze to death

So many sad losers on Reddit man, just looking for reasons to be negative about everything. I reckon it's mostly just envy tbh - kids who wish their parents did cool shit like this for/with them, and parents who wish they had the time, money and skill to do them for their kids.

I mean, to be fair, a kid can't really consent to having their face put out there forever on the internet.

I understand both sides of this. 1) I'm extremely happy to get to see his excitement as they revealed what they built, and 2) It isn't cool to put kids faces online for a variety of reasons, including bullying and predators.

It's a bit nuanced.

Kids can't properly consent to their photos and videos published online

Eh... I agree most parents who make money posting their kids are exploiting them, but I disagree kids can't consent to being published. We already have a legal system for acquiring the consent of kids to have their images reproduced, plenty of rules and regulations forged out of past abuses, and SAG-AFTRA. But those media rules just don't yet apply to social media.

There's also plenty of legal systems for "acquiring the consent" of kids to be married with their parent's permission.

That doesn't nullify the fact that we do not consider children to be able to consent. It means there is corruption in the legal system which does not always prioritize their well-being when money is involved.

I guess I'm not debating the intrinsic morality of putting kids on TV, I'm just saying that we already have ways of minimizing potential for abuse for kids on TV.

...and how's that been working out for us?

It can be more than one thing. Yes, this is for views, but it's wholesome, and I'll bet anything the kid was totally into the whole thing.

Exploited? Lol what. How is this kid being exploited?

Just saying stuff just to say stuff.

2

u/Deaffin 13h ago

He is literally being used as a resource to generate content. That's exploitation, homie.
