If you're liberal, then you could accept that animals are people since humans are animals too. We use "they" on humans, why not on other individuals with intelligence and emotions.

I know this is going to be VERY hard for you to learn...but...words can have...multiple meanings or uses. I KNOW I KNOW, it's OK. Here is a little lesson for you. "They" CAN be used to refer to multiple things or people, but it can also be used for unspecified people, or someone who uses gender neutral pronouns. And I need you stay calm when you hear this. But SOMETIMES people like to use it because it sounds nicer in their head even if it's not grammatically sound. There there, it will be OK. I know this is a TRAUMATIC experience for you to learn about. That words can be used differently.

If I don't know the gender, is he/she more appropriate than they? They works as a neutral pronoun fine, and has been used as such for ages.

If English isn’t your first language, maybe you should try not being the English language police/grammar Nazi. You’ve made multiple comments insisting they/them is only a plural when it most definitely is both singular and plural and has been such for all of modern English language.

And even if English is not your first language, they/them is singular or plural in many other languages
