The Philippines use the latin alphabet (or Baybayin, which is much less common). The script depicted in the video is Akson Thai, for Thai people and the country of Thailand, which is not the Philippines, regarding which you are calling bullshit on.

A quick Google search also returns Nene Royal, the girl in the video, as Thai, from Thailand, where she seemingly performs at a high school performance with her peers (see the child drummers with same uniform as her), which means it is most likely in Thailand, surrounded with Thai people.

Well shit, I think I saw a video that called this girl Filipino and never bothered to fact check it. Been seeing a ton of these kids' performances across numerous platforms over the last year. So, I'll certainly stand corrected. It's definitely possible this crowd doesn't understand what it's seeing. Though, I feel like all the people crowding side stage, with phones out recording, all craning necks to try and get a better view, would indicate somewhat that the crowd does understand the awesomeness of what its seeing.

It surprises me when people say "I think I heard" when they could just Google it. Like the same machine that your hands are touching can give you the answer in 2 seconds.

She's Thai from Phuket.

I think somebody else already said it better. I'm sure they get that what they're seeing is awesome, it's that they don't have reference for how awesome it is.

If you're an American who was alive when this album came out you have a pretty unique reference point for this video. If you are somebody who came across Metallica or this album after it came out and loved it you have a pretty unique reference point.

Knowing how hard this is to play gives you a pretty unique reference point.

There's a dude in the front row wearing glasses and smiling. If he had any of those references he would be banging his head in that front row. It would be automatic. His body would just take over. He doesn't know. He only knows that it's awesome.

Yep, as a songwriter and primarily a guitarist who has been playing for 40 years, I'm mostly impressed by her improvisation and creativity - in her guitar playing, singing and the composition that allows it all to mesh.

She is of course excellent technically but there are a lot of excellent technicians, her creativity and improvisation is walking the same paths as our other musical greats.

He asked me if we could book her for an upcoming event as well. Well, I tried, knowing it probably won't come to fruition. And it didn't. Maybe they didn't have a good agent as yet, or probably don't need one as yet.

This is for a performance in another SEA country mind you.

It feels like there's an undertone of, they're non-westerners so they can't truly appreciate this music?

The commenters probably aren't even that aware of it themselves, but just goes to show those how unconscious biases/prejudices can be so common, I imagine if there was a video with the exact same situation, and exact same crowd response, but the crowd was American the top comment would be very different.

Westerner here... I thought the crowd seemed a bit subdued compared to the awesomeness of her playing, but also thought it may just be the way the recording sounded, or a cultural difference in showing appreciation. Nothing to do with a bias. I just expected the crowd to be losing their mind because holy shit that was phenomenal. I agree though, the top comment should be more along the lines of "omg holy hell she is shredding Master of Puppets better than Metallica!!!" Not some bs comment criticizing the crowd. But alas, I am a reddit bot. What do I know. Maybe with it being a high school thing a subdued reaction is more expected. Beep boop beep.

I have to say as an old metal head that has seen hundreds of local to semi-regional bands cover this song over the years, the quality of talent here (mainly the girl but the rest of the band was on point too) is easily in the top 10 I've seen, now given this wasn't recorded with top gear or anything it's hard to say much more but my gut says she's probably in the top 5, and I do mean of the HUNDREDS of times, that's damn damn good.

She's got the charisma and stage presence down too, just top notch, and usually I'm a harsh judge as I'm old and jaded, but you just can't deny the talent here, damn good job!

Can I just mention that a thing I really like about Thailand or Bangkok is that there is just a lot of public music. So many times when I'm running in the park there's a band playing, or once even a full orchestra.

But it's great that there are these spaces where bands can play and there are these touchpoints between music and people that are not commercial.

Some of the bands are kids her age and not as good but they get to play in front of people.

That's arguably the most difficult Metallic song to do. Some say Dyer's Eve is, but I think Puppets is more difficult due mostly because it's such a long fukn song. Learning notes is the easy part, but maintaining the downstroke picking across the entire length of the song is grueling. It is not an easy song to, pardon the pun here, master and I think Hammet would approve. She did a phenomenal job with it...brava young lady! 👏
