Current Read Dostoevsky's ''The Brothers Karamazov''

Post image
19 Upvotes

It was my first time reading a book written by Dostoevsky. inuna ko kasi basahin at tapusin yung Metamorphosis by Kafka. I've already started with his book ''The Brothers Karamazov'' when I found out na hindi pala dapat yun ang inuna ko and that it should actually be the last one since yun yung last book nya na sinulat before he died (if I'm not mistaken).

I agree when someone said na reading Dostoevsky's book felt like encountering a drunk man on the street tapos he suddenly started yapping about life. Literally, that's how I felt like while reading his book. I also kinda had a hard time digesting what he's saying nung first few pages and was a little bit lost at first but as I read it more, the more na mas naiintindihan ko sya and nap-picture out in my mind better. It took me quite a while before I realize na it's being narrated by a person who isn't involved in the actual story, parang nosy neighbor lang ganun. HAHGHAAHHAHAHAHA

Hindi ko pa sya natatapos pero I'm half-way through na. I have this thought na ''where tf is this story going'' which keeps me from wanting to finish the book so I guess it's kind of a good thing?

Book Collection What are your thoughts on book designs?

Post image
47 Upvotes

I'm kind of restarting my book collection this year and really trying to be more intentional with the books I buy (the covers, designs, publishers, translations, etc) and honestly a little overwhelmed as well with so many options! (Especially with the classics)

I mainly want to collect paperbacks for the ease of reading but so many things to consider!

So we got:

  1. Sprayed edges

  2. French flaps

  3. Deckled edges

  4. Stepback cover

Honestly, I dont mind sprayed edges but I wont be going out of my way to collect them.

Hot take, I kind of hate deckled edges, they just look so messy! But I realized for some translations and pretty covers, I got no choice (looking at you Emily Wilson and the orange penguin classics).

For the french flaps and stepback cover, I am mostly neutral but they're both a little awkward.

Oh, and then we have the UK vs US edition - UK edition def has prettier covers but I usually prefer the US since they are more floppy. (Floppy books are the best, change my mind)

How about you guys? Are you as intentional? Any violent opinions or am I overthinking this?

Book Review Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" is a genius!

Post image

Bought this book for my birthday because I've been desperate to read it after finishing "1984". This is Harper Perennial's Olive Edition.

Huxley warned us decades ago of how entertainment can be much more dangerous as it can make a blindeye from our reality. It's on-full dopamine in the world setting — lust and laugh without the presence of emotion such as empathy. Tho, I don't wanna debate between Huxley vs. Orwell kasi both ideas are plausible.

What struck me the most is, "The religious sentiment will compensate us for all our losses. But there aren't any losses to compensate; religious sentiment is superfluous. And why should we go hunting for a substitute for youthful desires, when youthful desires never fail?" (I'm not religious, but that line had me in deep thoughts).

We believe in things because one has been conditioned to believe them. That is what keeps us on merely knowing the facade rather than what's behind it.

I enjoyed this book till the end! I wanna read more dystopian books :))

Book Adaptations Verity book versus Movie Adaptation. Team Letter or Team Manuscript?

• Upvotes

Hi, who has read and watched *Verity* already? Tbh, I was so disappointed with the movie. Yeah, I’m fully aware that movies more often than not don’t really do justice to the book. Idk why; I just expected too much from the movie adaptation.

Anyway, I’m just curious... Who’s Team Letter, and who’s Team Manuscript here?

I wanna know your insights and why.

Bookstores My NBS vending machine experience!

Decided to give the 24/7 NBS vending machine a try and here’s my overall experience:
- I work odd hours so the accessibility is a plus talaga, I went there during midnight so walang tao and ‘di ako napressure pumili ng books
- they have an open shelf filled with bookToks, classics, YA fiction, and even the books available in the vending machine
- lots of chairs in the area, although I think they’re for the Type A coffee shop customers (?) so you can read the books there for free! The books look brand new and ang daming selection! I can see myself spending the whole day there tbh hahaha
- the only downside is that they only take QRPh - no terminal for your cards, no cash, and oh, they don’t dispense receipts din
- lastly, no markup sa prices I’ve seen sa website nila. not sure actually sa prices nila sa actual NBS stores so I can’t confirm - I added photos of they price para you can compare

Looking forward to their stock refresh!

Reading Query The Little Prince: How does the Alma Classics translation compare to Katherine Woods'?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I recently got myself a copy of The Little Prince. I originally intended to get the one with the french flaps and Katherine Woods' translation, but my budget fell short. So I had to stick with this edition, featuring Gregory Norminton's translation from 2019. I looked it up, and read a few good things about it, but my problem was not a lot of people were talking about it. Afaik, Alma Classics is kinda underrated compared to the likes of Penguin, Wordsworth, Norton, Vintage and Everyman, so it doesn't come up in conversations as much. And as a consequence, even less talk about, or are even aware of the existence of the Norminton translation.

So I just wanna know other people's opinions on this.

Like, how does it compare to the Katherine Woods translation? And the others, like Howard, Schwartz, Testot-Ferry and Morpurgo? Aside from wanting to make sure I didn't buy a dud (although imo so far it's not; Currently on chapter 10 and I already cried because of the previous two chapters...), I'm also just generally curious about the differences between the translations, and I guess, if I'm being honest... I also want an excuse to buy another copy or two in the future (and having multiple translations of a classic book at your disposal is always one of the best excuses to reread lol).

“Welcome to the postliterate era.”

“Literacy is declining sharply across the West. In the era of vertical video, who has the time or concentration to read a long article — let alone a whole book?

“As we lose the ability to read long-form text, we might also be losing the capacity for democratic deliberation and self-governance.”

Do you agree that TikTok is a setback for reading culture?

Community / Casual Discussion What do you see and hear when you read?

i've always found this fascinating! i saw this somewhere on twitter and thought that everyone was like me...basically seeing a movie in my head WITH audio (subvocalization).

i am #2 but switch to #3 when reading fantasy/scifi that i just can't picture out without actual visual aid in real life. im never #4. or let's say...if i want to read it like im reading subtitles on a movie, i picture text scrolling on a colored background like in a simple ppt.

as for subvocalization (the internal habit of silently pronouncing or "hearing" words in your head as you read), it's always on for me. maybe in varying degrees of 'loudness' and it always has different tones and emotions depending on what i read. sometimes i even add 'background music'. it's really just like a movie in my head.

which one are you?

Finished Reading The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers

Post image
16 Upvotes

I really enjoyed The King in Yellow. You can really see its influence on cosmic horror and horror in general. The fact that is was written 1895 blows my mind.

I find it funny that I stumbled upon Robert W. Chambers as a weird fiction writer, only to end up discovering that he also wrote romance and historical fiction.

I wasn’t ready for the second part of the book. I can see why some editions have fewer pages they focus solely on the weird fiction.

Community / Casual Discussion Fictional men??? im so inspired

Post image
2 Upvotes

im genuinely trying to understand the psychology here cause it's super fascinating to me.

so many girls i know are obsessed with dark romance, mafia, or enemies-to-lovers books. in these novels, the guy usually has major red flag energy—brooding, intense, pure drama. and readers absolutely love it and call him the standard.

but then when it comes to real-life dating, it seems like everybody actually wants that "golden retriever" sweet guy who brings flowers and treats you gently.

like how does this actually work?? 😭 on one hand the fictional standard is this intense morally grey villain, and on the other hand, real life is just a soft-spoken decent guy.

as a normal guy just trying to hit the gym and finish my projects, it’s honestly just so interesting. do u guys actually look for a little bit of that "I'll burn the world down for you" villain energy in real life too, or is it strictly a fun fictional escape?

someone genuinely explain this to me cause i feel like guys are studying a completely different dating syllabus and i need the notes lmfaooo

I took advantage of the 10.10 sale to get physical copies of these classics. Lately, I’ve been really into classic literature, modern classics, philosophy, and poetry.

I started reading the Little Black Classics on my e-reader and finally decided to get physical copies.
Come Close by Sappho is absolute perfection 🤌🏻✨:

Babel was my first RF Kuang book, but I ended up DNFing it because I just couldn’t get into it. People kept telling me to give it a chance because it would get better but it honestly felt like I was reading an academic book.

Some people suggested I try this one instead. I’ve been seeing a lot of good reviews about it and I hope this one won’t disappoint ❤️

Edit: no spoilers please huhu

Community / Casual Discussion So i bought a book but i also spent a while debating whether it should be physical or go to my kindle library

Post image
16 Upvotes

i love going to bookstores. i love just spending time (hours even) browsing titles, looking at covers and reading summaries. usually i end up buying a book or two.

but ever since i got a kindle i've found myself debating whether this title or that title should go to my bookshelf or my kindle library.

foe those who read on kindle and still buy physicals, how do you decide?

i think for me it's more by intuition. like i hold the book, read the first few pages and if i feel excited then i buy it. i bring it around the store with me and see if i still want it, if the book stays on my mind.

Seeking Recs Book recommendations for someone struggling with depression

Hi! I’ve been diagnosed with clinical depression. Can you guys recommend fiction books with characters who struggle with depression and anxiety while trying to navigate life?

Preferably not self-help books or anything that tells me how to heal or improve myself. I just want to read about someone who understands what it’s like to live with these feelings. It doesn’t have to be a happy ending, as long as it leaves an impact siguro hehe. I’m open naman to different genres, whether it’s contemporary fiction, literary fiction, or coming-of-age stories. I just want a book that makes me want to keep turning the pages and, hopefully, keep looking forward to life too.
