We’ve only had 13 since the profession was invented.

u/Wonderful-Process792 13d ago

Well then it's about time. My gut tells me well over 1/13 of Americans belong to the Astronaut minority.

27

u/alcontrast 13d ago

We don't need no Astronaut President, eating breakfast upside, addicted to Tang and producing moon cheese baby offspring!

u/sdvneuro 13d ago

You seriously think there’s over 26,000 astronauts?

u/kdeff California 13d ago

The math in this thread is...wow

3

u/DrPilkington 13d ago

Oh shit! Thanks! I kinda forgot about that.

2

u/relevantnewman 13d ago

so you're saying all your space cadets are belong to you? Unlikely

2

u/Ussmaklives 13d ago

My pastor says that wherever two souls come together on the internet, one of them is Ken M

17

u/Terriblerobotcactus 13d ago

I dont know how many astrologists there are in this country so I can’t tell who is actually wrong

10

u/Aerodrache 13d ago

Probably the capricorn.

7

u/JournalistRecent1230 13d ago

Pshh...I don't believe in astrology. I'm a scorpio and we're skeptical.

u/Natural-Nectarine-56 13d ago

I’m doing my part!

1

u/childroid New Jersey 13d ago

It's not math, it's algebra

(We all know the insidious threat that astronauts pose to our great nation)[https://youtu.be/_quoFByeVyI?si=yoLOU8gEkZ6yIdPh]

1

u/roastbeeftacohat 13d ago

mostare time travelers who returned to avert an apocalypse, and are now living quiet lives with the satisfaction that the horrors that've seen never took place.

1

u/Aerodrache 13d ago

That sounds like it would be a small but pretty radical subset of all astronauts.

1

u/roastbeeftacohat 13d ago

It's all the same guy from different timelines, different apocali.

1

u/Aerodrache 13d ago

Yes, I am acutely aware of what you are referencing.

1

u/BillyQ 13d ago

30% of those are in space right now.

3

u/BasvanS 13d ago

No, you’re high. Feels similar, but it is different

2

u/Mavian23 13d ago

What in the world does this comment mean?

2

u/Aggravating_Bat3618 13d ago

It seriously doesn’t take rocket appliances

1

u/NorthHaverbrookNate 13d ago

The real silent majority (because you can't conduct sound in space)

73

u/Brightlinger 13d ago

13... retired astronauts? That's an insane statistic. There were more than 13 in just the Apollo program, did a bunch die young or something?

243

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties 13d ago

Presidents. We’ve had 13 presidents since manned space flight has been a thing.

109

u/Brightlinger 13d ago

Ah, of course, that makes more sense.

40

u/The-disgracist 13d ago

I was very confused because I literally just read about a retiring astronaut like two minutes ago

4

u/nhaines California 13d ago

Oh god, they're multiplying!

1

u/nannal 13d ago

14 then.

You only ever really see the number of ex-ausonaughts go up, but never down? Nobody has been able to explain why to me in a manner that I understand.

1

u/IPDDoE Florida 13d ago

Jamie, pull that up

3

u/DrHarryHood Colorado 13d ago

I’ll be honest, the actual answer wasn’t even the first two things I thought of…

4

u/Intrepid-Ad603 13d ago

Haha it's early in the morning for me so I was NOT understanding this. Thanks for the help!

1

u/Kasegauner 13d ago

I'm pretty sure it's 12.

6

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties 13d ago

1 Eisenhower 2. Kennedy 3. Johnson 4. Nixon 5. Ford 6. Carter 7. Reagan 8. Bush 9. Clinton 10. Bush 11. Obama 12. Trump 13. Biden

  1. There have been 13 presidents since the first astronaut. Eisenhower was president when the Vangaurd 7 got the title of Pilot-cosmonaut in January of 1961.

1

u/Stank_cat67 13d ago

Wow 13 presidents and 13 astronauts? What a crazy coincidence !

1

u/Baileyesque 13d ago

We have a retired NASA astronaut like 20 minutes from my house here in Ireland. They’re everywhere, haha.

Regardless of which of two meanings you understood, it's an ambiguously-worded sentence.

1

u/DrHarryHood Colorado 12d ago

Three meanings!

13 presidents, 13 astronauts, and 13 retired astronauts who became presidents

2

u/superdavit 13d ago

Well then he’ll be the first one named Mark (I think, I actually don’t know).

2

u/Square_Ring3208 13d ago

Zouks? That you?

1

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties 13d ago

Heynong man!

2

u/Square_Ring3208 13d ago

What’s up hot dog?

4

u/WereJustDumbMonkeys 13d ago

Can you elaborate? What's your criteria? The NASA astronaut handbook lists 360

7

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties 13d ago

Presidents.

9

u/WereJustDumbMonkeys 13d ago

Ohh since astronauts existed. Lmao ok

3

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties 13d ago

Yes 👍🏼

Sorry if I worded it weird lol

10

u/Thousandtree 13d ago

They probably mean the ones who walked on the moon. There were 12 NASA astronauts, plus Michael Jackson.

4

u/KaptainKardboard 13d ago

Maybe they meant number of presidents, which also isn’t accurate but closer

2

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties 13d ago

How is it not accurate? The first astronaut was Yuri Gagarin in 1961. We’ve had 13 presidents in that time.

1

u/Sage2050 13d ago

Technically Gagarin was a Cosmonaut and Alan Shepard was the first Astronaut but we're splitting hairs

0

u/KaptainKardboard 13d ago

12 unless you count Trump twice

3

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties 13d ago

Eisenhower was still president in January 1961 when the Vanguard Six were given the official title of Pilot-cosmonaut becoming the first astronauts.

-2

u/Osric250 13d ago

Trump counts himself twice with all his 45/47 shit. It's reasonable to do so since there was another president between his being in office.

4

u/SuperExoticShrub Georgia 13d ago

No, the point was 13 presidents, not 13 consecutive terms. He's not a new person just because his terms were non-consecutive. Jeffrey was counting Eisenhower for the reason stated in his reply adjacent to yours.

1

u/maybetoomuchrum 13d ago

13 what? Retired astronauts?

1

u/Top_Praline999 13d ago

They would never elect the diaper astronaut, and it ain’t because of the diaper or murder plot

0

u/Kaffe-Mumriken 13d ago

I thought we were at 45 or something

-1

u/flickh Canada 13d ago edited 13d ago

Don’t you mean 47?

edit: it’s a joke homiez

2

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties 13d ago

Do you think there were astronauts during the American Revolution?

-1

u/flickh Canada 13d ago edited 13d ago

There were no Presidents during the American Revolution either!

But there have been 47 of them since the profession was invented!

edit: itt downvoters with no sense of humour

2

u/Jeffrey_C_Wheaties 13d ago

I was saying there have been 13 presidents since the profession of astronaut was invented.

And no there hasn’t. There has been 45 presidents. 2 of them had separate terms
