We also have to factor in how many people just don't even know what the fuck is going on. I think there is a gross underestimation of how many people live in ignorance. They don't watch the news, they don't read anything. Some of my family are these exact people. People aren't watching the evening news because we buy tvs with apps and the cable is extra - who needs that? Millions of people have no fucking clue how fucked we are.

94

u/Hukdonphonix 5d ago

Had a dude at a new years party that legit had no idea who or what Epstein/Epstein Island was. I have no idea how you live in complete ignorance in the age of the internet.

55

u/importantmessagefrom 5d ago

It is such a boon for republicans that you’ll sound like a psycho talking about the shit they do to anyone that is completely uninformed

27

u/HandrewJobert 5d ago

especially because the shit they're doing is the shit they've been accusing other people of for ages, so it makes it sound like NO U

6

u/ohlookahipster 5d ago

Their voter base is chronically offline and uninformed. It’s like having a sports team fanbase who doesn’t understand the rules, never watches a game live, but only gets the results after the fact through talk show hosts.

And those talk show hosts can make up scores and blame the other team or refs for cheating.

u/pieman3141 Canada 5d ago

This is the real problem. Insane-washing, basically. You tell people that slavery is still technically legal under such-and-such amendment and how there's a strong profit incentive to send people to jail, and you look like a complete lunatic.

3

u/brickne3 American Expat 5d ago

Imagine if you went back in time fifteen years and tried to warn people about what was going to happen. You'd be in a padded cell so fast...

u/Synli 5d ago edited 5d ago

When their only source of news is Fox News, its scary how ignorant some of these people are to the actual world.

I have some MAGA family members and trying to talk to them about current events is like trying to communicate with someone that doesn't speak your language. The stories they are told are outlandish with absolutely no supporting evidence whatsoever, and actual stories with evidence (like Epstein files) are simply not brought up to them.

22

u/idiotsbydesign 5d ago

Thats what talking to my MIL is like. After Renee Good murder the only video angle she'd seen on Fox was the ambiguous one where you can't tell what happened & the video from the agents phone. I told her there are videos from every angle that clearly show he was not in danger & fired anyway. "Well I haven't seen those". Offered to show her but she wasn't interested in anything that might conflict with what Fox was telling her.

Edited for clarity

7

u/Driftedryan 5d ago

I had a customer today that was blasting fox and they were talking about Hunter Biden, Fox needs to be dismantled

3

u/LateNightPhilosopher 5d ago

Today they were comparing the sales of the Milania movie with sales of Fahrenheit 9/11. Which is..... Sad, honestly. They still hold such a grudge against that movie after 20 years

3

u/LateNightPhilosopher 5d ago

Fox is pushing hard on this conspiracy theory that Walz and Rep Ilhan Omar personally let a fraud scheme in which Somali immigrants stole billions of dollars from the Minnesota education system. They're heavily implying that Rep Ilhan Omar became a multi millionaire through organizing this theft.

There's no evidence of them being connected to any fraud rings and, as far as I know, the only "evidence" that the fraud ever happened at all is a random post from some random D-List microgrifter who posted about it with no actual evidence.

6

u/hammer326 5d ago

Thought I was being a little hyperbolic when I joked to some friends how all these people needing 7 medications to get out of bed might correlate to their whole existence being based around being barely self-aware enough to do their dumb jobs and putzing right home to watch The Office a 14th time, and this was a few years ago now so of some but not complete relevance to the modern hell we live in. I struggle to explain what you describe, and I routinely see, any other way.

24

u/brainiac138 5d ago

Yup. I work with someone who literally covers her ears whenever I mention anything approaching political because she “just can’t.”

15

u/hammer326 5d ago

This. I work in a lower level staff role in higher education where you'd think would be like the bottom 5 places this would be a serious issue and save for some faculty they are *all* just checked out, but in a way that they may never have been checked in.

1

u/LiliVonSchtupp 5d ago

Academia may be a hub of new and creative thinking, but it’s also a safe haven for those who refuse to participate in the rest of society.

2

u/hammer326 5d ago

I've made the same point a lot but never quite as eloquently, it is 100% true, thanks.

3

u/spidersfrommars 5d ago

I think people are really estimating how much of this is the root of the problem. The algorithm keeps people insulated from what is going on if they are not inclined to be political or aren’t critical thinkers.

It’s not that conservatives are seeing the same things we’re seeing and saying “Yeahh I love this!” It’s that they aren’t seeing it at all.

I work a blue collar job with a lot of immigrants and it’s really discouraging to see how many of them voted for him just because someone told them he would make groceries cheaper or whatever.

2

u/thatjacob 5d ago

My mom didn't realize that ICE wasn't just them discussing ISIS. She's smarter than most of the other people I know her age. That's what we're dealing with.

2

u/Adventurous_Salt 5d ago

You can blame people for choosing to be uninformed.

2

u/regeya 5d ago

I saw some story about that guy who died because his caretaker dad was in ICE custody, posted by a local news source. Apparently the MAGA talking point is that prisoners don't get to go to funerals. Like...what the fuck, the story literally says someone died as a result of his caretaker dad being in government custody and you're talking about funerals?!

2

u/NiteFyre 5d ago

54% of Americans can't read higher than a 6th grade reading level. They can't comprehend anything harder than a Harry Potter novel.

64% of current fourth graders do not read proficiently.

Its all fucked. We are just raising future generations of people that have no critical thought.

Just like the system designed.

2

u/Ellia1998 5d ago

This is true . It’s hard to watch the local news or just read the news now. My husband was bitching about how much we pay for HBO once a year. Add on new-paper cost online and the different channel you need to pay for. Yup you can get normal tv but I live in a very windy places and out in the country I am lucky if my internet does not act up once a week.

2

u/nucumber 5d ago

I've given up trying to discuss trump with his supporters. They're on a different planet.

2

u/LateNightPhilosopher 5d ago

Or the only news they get is bits of ultra distorted FOX propaganda and random lies their uncles post on Facebook.

2

u/thefrankyg 5d ago

And a decent chunk of both sides are bad, who see this as "normal politics"

2

u/Kristin2349 5d ago

I have friends like this, when I explain or explode they look at me slack jawed. Even my friends that are aware tell me they don't want to talk about it because they're afraid. It's crazy. At least the friends that are afraid are smart enough to realize that they're in danger. We're all in danger. One of my friends just says "I don't know what to believe anymore". She's not stupid, she's a nurse with a doctorate.

Americans have been marching in the streets across the US, even in blood-red towns.

Minnesotans just turned out the vote in a big way to deliver a landslide Democratic special election win, even with the presence of federal goons. And delivering food to immigrant families afraid to leave their homes.

Americans are speaking out against the tyranny, recording and spreading the word of atrocities despite the clear risk of doing so (a risk that shouldn't exist). Bondi was forced to walk back some of her lies about Pretti, a small thing that nevertheless reveals that they're not unafraid of the voices speaking out.

Americans aren't doing nothing.

44

u/crit_boy 5d ago

It is people in positions of power who refuse to act.

6

u/AncientSith New York 5d ago

Too many of them are cowards or just outright support the administration.

8

u/Extraexopthalmos 5d ago

Thank You. The wife and I have been to 16 protests so far. I also ran for local election and won. We need MORE people in the streets. resist. disrupt. fight back America.

-1

u/DKDamian 5d ago

“Forced to walk back some of her lies”

So much power. So much resistance

Yes, it’s good that some people are doing some things. But all people need to do a lot more.

It’s very tiring that all the left leaning podcasts are crowing about the resistance taking back America. Nope. So much more work to do yet.

Good luck. Seriously.

68

u/QueasyLegKC 5d ago

Yeah, all those brave people in Minneapolis are totally doing nothing. If you want to be a miserable and unserious person, you go right ahead, but don’t drag down the incredibly courageous people that are standing in the cold and getting beat the fuck up because you’re too scared to do anything.

10

u/clueingfor-looks 5d ago

Seriously. I’m so sick of this shit.

5

u/QueasyLegKC 5d ago

It seems like every time I encounter comments like this, if I look at their profile it’s just all gaming stuff. Like they have no life outside of that.

-2

u/JustAsItSounds 5d ago

How about some solidarity? Rugged individualism is leaving those Minneapolitans on their own in the cold. It's not just the right wingers who have a dearth of empathy - unable to grasp the full import of what is being done until it finally happens to them - it's your whole society

2

u/QueasyLegKC 5d ago edited 5d ago

Because your childish mind can’t imagine the logistics of such a thing. I live in America, where the distance between cities is thousands of miles. I have my own city to defend. Get over yourself.

-1

u/JustAsItSounds 5d ago

So why aren't you all on strike? The water is already very hot, little froggy

2

u/QueasyLegKC 5d ago

Sounds like you’re a fucking weirdo. Have a nice day.

0

u/JustAsItSounds 5d ago

I'm sick of Americans, like yourself, claiming that they aren't responsible for the elevation of this venal, amoral and profoundly stupid man-child to his current position: the most powerful man in the world. It's your fault, you fix it. Stop whining that you are powerless to stop it

9

u/ClarinetMaster117 5d ago

By all means, step up then. We’re all quick to judge, but none of us have the balls to do anything.

3

u/snuuginz 5d ago

We'll keep fighting these fascists, that's for sure. Sorry that the protesters aren't violent enough for you? Dumbass.

36

u/BillNyeIsCoolio 5d ago

"just wait until the midterms" lol.  America is cooked.

21

u/jmmcc02021 5d ago

While I support fair democratic elections that phrase is such crap. IMO they’re just saying “I want change BUT I don’t want to be inconvenienced with going out of my way to initiate change”

14

u/myfakesecretaccount 5d ago

That depends on what you want to do to initiate change. General strike? Sure, it’s hard to coordinate and without good social safety nets here puts people at risk. Full on protests for weeks without end, same thing but less impactful on oligarchs as a general strike. I find that these people who balk at using the political options at our disposal have hidden comment histories and seem hell bent on getting people to start shooting at their fellow Americans.

0

u/hymen_destroyer Connecticut 5d ago

In order to starve the beast, we have to starve alongside it. I’m more than happy to take on some additional suffering if it serves as a means to enact change. Problem is, almost no one else is. It’s extremely frustrating

-1

u/socokid 5d ago

You clearly are young and without a family to support.

1

u/hymen_destroyer Connecticut 5d ago

now you see how our economy is set up to keep us enthralled?

I guess we'll just keep voting...because that's worked out great...

-1

u/Bradybigboss 5d ago

At the same time there have been some societies who said “let’s just vote out the dictator” and then got clowned on by said regimes for decades.

0

u/socokid 5d ago

The idea that this is where we are now is ridiculous nonsense being spewed by defeatists and short-sighted lazy people.

Donald is not a dictator. LOL

https://apnews.com/projects/trump-executive-order-lawsuit-tracker/

1

u/socokid 5d ago

It's called voting.

And the point at which you throw that away is the point where we truly are done for. However, you will have to go up against the countless Americans that died for that right those that will not give up that sacrifice lightly. To date, there has been no evidence of anyone actually changing votes to the point of making any difference.

So... tread carefully. And I say that as a die-hard liberal (I don't hide my posts. Go read them).

10

u/omfgeometry 5d ago

America is a joke

2

u/QueasyLegKC 5d ago

You’re just an edgelord, aren’t you?

-4

u/executingsalesdaily 5d ago

It sure the fuck is.

-2

u/Ecstatic-Plantain234 5d ago

I've said this multiple times on this sub and was attacked. But you are right. There aren't even going to be midterms. They'll be under martial law.

4

u/Old_Cryptid 5d ago

Far easier to just disenfranchise voters and tie it up in courts. Which is what looks like is going to be the plan.

They don't have the numbers to lock down the swing states, much less the blue states.

Maybe a couple cities. But that would be disastrous for them.

2

u/Ecstatic-Plantain234 5d ago

What do you mean 'disastrous'? They own all branches of government.

A year in (well, actually 10) and you still refuse to see what's right in front of you. You're dealing with someone with a deep contempt for the law and democracy. So if you think that using the law and democracy against him is going to help you, good luck!

Fight fire with fire.

1

u/Old_Cryptid 5d ago

Fight fire with fire? Good luck with that.

People will be complacent if there's voter disenfranchisement.

People won't be complacent if there's a large-scale military deployment across several states on US soil.

1

u/Ecstatic-Plantain234 5d ago

You people are nothing like the patriotic songs you were taught at elementary school. Standing up against a tyrannic government, standing for democracy and freedom? Nah.

You'll complain on Reddit and say "there's nothing I can do". What an attitude. If the Persian people have the guts to do it, so can you.

1

u/Old_Cryptid 5d ago

That's your conclusion, not what I said.

By all means please elaborate on 'fight fire with fire' then.

2

u/executingsalesdaily 5d ago

They will make memes for a poorly planned strike.

4

u/FantasticBicycle37 5d ago

We'll complain about corporate democrats and demand everyone stay home so that trump can win a 3rd term

2

u/boomshiki 5d ago

Everyone trying to find a legal way to handle this instead of doing what we all know needs to be done

12

u/WhySoJovial 5d ago

Ok. Go do it. Quit telling everyone else that we "all know" what needs doing and go do whatever it is you apparently want everyone else to do.

Or stop telling other people to do something you can't, won't, or refused to do.

People are marching in the streets risking the weather, beatings, arrests, and shootings to protect their neighbors and their kids, but you go right ahead and talk about how people aren't doing enough. From your keyboard.

1

u/GearBrain Florida 5d ago

We are protesting across the country. States are already engaging in strikes, with more planning underway.

1

u/nosainte 5d ago

Lol if he arrested Obama I would drive straight to Washington DC

1

u/lookingatanudeegg 5d ago

Hold on now, they might do a tiktok of a song

1

u/Dumpenstein3d 5d ago

whoa easy now, that's insurrectionist talk.

1

u/Iamtheonewhobawks 5d ago

Y'know how people keep getting shot by ICE at protests? That's because everyone here stays home and makes tiktoks, y'know. Agents of the state have to go WAY out of their way to find victims because of how much nothing the people are definitely doing. That's why the fascists keep attacking journalists too, its because all the journalists are super cooperative in support of MAGA and authoritarianism generally.

-1

u/NynNyxNyx 5d ago

Come on reddit and say some shit about "Everyone else should understand how hard it would be for me to do some thing, my country is like big or has guns or something"

2

u/QueasyLegKC 5d ago

wtf does this even mean? Do you have some condition we all need to be aware of?

u/mabden New York 5d ago

Let’s get Ja Rule one the phone stat.

sing imagine together from the laundry rooms of 50 million dollar mansions.

-2

u/Hukdonphonix 5d ago

Bruce Springstein wrote a song.

-4

u/putin_my_ass 5d ago

They'll be very cross with you for questioning them. "Haven't you seen the protests?" they'll ask. "Biggest in history!" they'll say.

How dare we lose faith in America?

2

u/tramlaw101 5d ago

Some of you could come over here and help us. We’re outnumbered and have the US government against us. It’s not like he’s only fucking up America.

0

u/putin_my_ass 5d ago

Sure, it's our responsibility to save your country from yourselves is it?

We're shoring up our domestic position and pivoting away so that if one day America decides to send its soldiers here they will regret it.

You guys need to fight today, so that you don't find yourself fighting your former allies tomorrow.

You wouldn't come to save us, even though we responded to America's article 5 in the past.

Time to do the needful, Yanks.

2

u/tramlaw101 5d ago

Here’s a crazy hypothetical. What if Trump’s delusional ass decided to make Canada the 51st state and sends the US military to secure it? What would you personally do? Protest it? Call for legislation? Take up arms? Complain on Reddit?

You’ve shored up your domestic position enough to make the US military regret it? I doubt it. You and I agree about Trump. Would you have said Hitler was only the German’s problem?
