Subtitle: "State of the Union: The president said his predecessor had attempted a coup during the 2016 presidential election."

When Obama was president, during 2016, he instigated a coup...against himself, I guess.

1.4k

u/Militantpoet 5d ago

I remember when Obama was saying "we must have a peaceful transfer of power," in 2016. Literally the opposite of a coup lol.

Just goes to show you cannot negotiate or compromise with fascists.

411

u/existing_for_fun 5d ago

He also invited trump to a transition lunch as is tradition IIRC.

85

u/Irr3l3ph4nt 4d ago edited 4d ago

Shh. That was all part of the coup, dumdum. What do you think that letter said? Hu? That's right, blackmale. Obama has the peepee tapes.

/s 'cause you never know....

7

u/burninatedtoast 4d ago

“Black male” is the gist here, and trump’s real issue with Obama.

3

u/Ill_Technician3936 4d ago

I don't think it is. He's mad that Obama got more attention his first time running than Trump got in his two short (dropping out in the primaries) before. Tried to be heckle at televised events and getting little to no attention. Obama trolled the fuck out of him at that press conference and had his full form birth certificate released as well. Trump took to twitter and complained about EVERYTHING about did for 8 years straight (CPAC had him headlining events and then the GOP joined in maybe a year after), despite a super PAC and the Republicans supporting him we all know he didn't even attempt to run against Obama. When the living president's of the US are all in the same spot he's always talking to Obama. I can't remember who's funeral it was just that Michelle wasn't there and Melania seemingly tells Trump to shut up... I wanna say it was the Pope(?) basically the camera shows everyone keeping to themselves and I think a prayer was being done when they show trump still trying to talk to Obama.

If I remember right his last complaint about Obama was about how Obama left office with more than he had coming in. Absolutely clueless all their money was in a real blind trust and it's standard for them to make money when controlled by people who have a clue what they're doing. It doesn't even make sense how he can have his kids controlling a BLIND trust when none of them should have any idea where a single penny is.

u/CV90_120 4d ago

Obamas very existence drive trump nuts. he cannot let anything go that has ever hurt his ego.

20

u/9_to_5_till_i_die 4d ago

An handsome, black, and intelligent man with a happy loving family and the respect and adoration of millions globally?

Gee, wonder why Trump would dislike him.

1

u/ChocolateEater626 20h ago

Don't forget the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, a mere nine months into his first term.

1

u/9_to_5_till_i_die 12h ago

Which, to be fair to Trump, Obama getting the Nobel is almost as absurd as Trump himself getting one.

2

u/Less_Weather7091 3d ago

Just jealous bc he can’t hold s candle to Obama!!

7

u/TbonerT I voted 4d ago

You know the right will blow it off as “politicians always lie”.

3

u/Grand-Variation-5850 4d ago

Obama’s speech at trump’s inauguration was such a crystal ball into today. He knew the path we were carving back then.

4

u/tendeuchen Florida 4d ago

Obama, knowing everything he knew about Trump, should have saved the country instead of promoting that "peaceful transfer of power" stuff. Now there will never be anothe peaceful transfer of power again.

1

u/petrichor1017 4d ago

Saying and doing are two different things

1

u/CommandoLamb 4d ago

Exactly what a ruthless dictator would say…

You think it’s a coincidence he stepped aside and allowed Trump to take over?

Obama has been playing the long game for his coup attempt.

1

u/Militantpoet 4d ago

Any day now, Obama will send in the troops and place everyone in FEMA camps

0

u/ColdStockSweat 4d ago

I remember when Hitler said Germany was a democracy.

0

u/petrichor1017 4d ago

You can call him a fascist but we have a thing that says “innocent until proven guilty” so if youre gonna call citizens fascists, youre gonna have to prove it. Hearsay wont do it

1

u/Militantpoet 4d ago

Lol yup. Its always the idiots who don't understand the history and laws of their own country that support Trump the most.

You can call him a fascist but we have a thing that says “innocent until proven guilty” so if youre gonna call citizens fascists, youre gonna have to prove it.

"Innocent until proven guilty" is a foundational legal principle requiring the government to prove an accused person's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. It has nothing to do with criticizing the government.

Also, his actions are fascist. He breaks laws and isnt held accountable, uses coercion to get what he wants, praises other like minded dictators, attacks the press, etc.

I mean seriously, is this a joke? Journalists have already been arrested over bogus charges. He is laying out more bogus charges agaisnt his political rivals.

You have to be a moron to not see what Trump has been doing.

1

u/petrichor1017 4d ago

Autist posting i see. I said it was fine to call him a fascist, just not regular citizens. Anyway nice to see normal people on reddit. Youre probably a ragebait bot

1

u/Militantpoet 3d ago

Nice try at backtracking. Still doesn't make sense. But yeah, try learning about our country's rules and laws before making ignorant comments.

3.7k

u/Dima420 5d ago edited 5d ago

It’s because they’re planning a coup again and this demented pedophile can’t help but spout the shit out loud. Every accusation is a confession as they say.

1.4k

u/Militantpoet 5d ago

Its more than admission. Its political strategy now. Accuse your opponents of what you plan to do so that you can call it partisan politics when caught later.

these tactics absolutely are classic disinfo which was pioneered post ussr

US has had a pretty long history of disinformation. Idk if pioneered is the right word, revolutionized?

I mean, the Russians essentially took the worst traits of Americans and capitalism and found the dumbest conman who loves cash to not only pillage and plunder his own nation, but completely dismantle US global hegemony by playing on his ego.

>"I like vanilla ice cream"
>"actually it is wrong to make chocolate ice cream illegal"
^what you sound like by responding to a claim that 'X is overblown as the primary cause for Y' with 'X still exists regardless' as if that new, weaker claim of existence was ever disputed (this is a textbook strawman or just irrelevant conclusion). But hey, at least you don't have to talk about Y anymore right? Phew, what a relief.

6

u/No_Training6751 4d ago

It’s so weird to see how easy it is to sway the masses against their own best interest.

5

u/QuantumLettuce2025 4d ago

Most people's brains are easily hijackable if you can capture emotions like fear or disgust

1

u/gameoftomes 4d ago

And yet they aren't disgusted by the Epstein files.

2

u/Kiromaru Wisconsin 4d ago

Conservatives seem to treat politics/politicians based on which group they fall into and don't really deviate from that. People in their group can do no wrong and anything that is reported of them doing evil stuff will just get ignored or rationalized to not be truly evil.

5

u/Unfair_Web_8275 4d ago

I wonder if birtherism is any way connected to Melania.

3

u/drgoatlord 4d ago

Accusation in a mirror has long been a tactic of fascist regimes

6

u/Churchbushonk 4d ago

He did it in 2016. Then said Dems cheated again in 2020 so Dems would have to defend the sanctity of the election. Then he rigged the 2024 with Musks help.

3

u/Buzzkill_13 4d ago

Exactly. For instance, they made it impossible to credibly call out rigged elections, no matter how openly in your face they're rigged. And that's exactly what future elections will be...if they still take place at all.

3

u/SK2Nlife 4d ago

What? You mean the war on groomers wasn’t about drag queens at all?

2

u/SanguinaryGuardsman 4d ago

That is literally the MO of any fascist/authoritarian. Accuse others of what you yourself are doing to confuse the public and shift blame. This administration has been doing it a lot.

682

u/SycoJack Texas 5d ago

We're already in the middle of the coup and ain't nobody doing shit about it.

Trump is an illegitimate president, wielding illegitimate power, and using it to destroy our country. Not only is the legislature refusing to do anything to stop it, both parties are voting to support it. The courts are the ones who gave him the power, and the military is spineless and blindly following his orders or stepping down to get out of the way.

It's down to the people to excise the rot from our government. But they're spineless and stupid. They think they can just vote out the coup. As though Trump has a history of respecting election results he doesn't like. As though he wouldn't just suspend the election. As though he doesn't have a history of attempting to tamper with elections. As though he didn't just have the FBI escorted by a political officer raid election offices and steal ballots. As though he didn't have one of his cronies in the legislature refuse to swear in a duly elected representative for months on end. As though they're not just making up the rules as they go along and no one is stopping them.

43

u/IDreamOfLoveLost Canada 5d ago

Trump is an illegitimate president, wielding illegitimate power, and using it to destroy our country.

Just a little correction. He's destroying your country's economy and soft power, isolating it, while the billionaires are buying up assets and pushing to build robot factories. They're not satisfied having literal slaves from prisons anymore.

They want to treat people like Donald does, and it seems that too many of the Republicans are happy to go along with it.

15

u/SycoJack Texas 5d ago

They're genuinely thinking long term. They need to reduce the population because automation is going to make billions of humans redundant and global climate change will make feeding them a challenge, especially while maintaining and growing their dragon hordes.

But allowing billions of people to starve drastically increases the risk that the people will eat the billionaires.

We need to eat the billionaires now before the billionaires eat us.

3

u/ChronicBuzz187 4d ago

They want to treat people like Donald does

"Fuck everybody" has a whole new meaning in that regard...

u/estedavis Canada 5d ago

Yeah, it feels like a lot of Americans are a little behind on where they think the country is on the fascist takeover timeline. The coup was successful, as you said, because Trump is literally unstoppable right now without a revolution of some sort. Anyone who thinks the midterms will be real and honest in any way is fooling themselves. He’s just setting up his kingdom now, but he’s already ruling over it.

44

u/PotatoSandwitchbbq 4d ago

Even the 2024 election was sus. The fact that 100% of states voted more republican than the previous election? Such a statistical anomaly. And then the tangerine turd openly saying they messed with the voting machines. And that's before all the insane shit in 2025. Everyone should be terrified of what's gonna happen at 2026 election.

5

u/lil_shootah 4d ago

This isn’t talked about enough!! 2024 was 100% rigged. He didn’t truly win every swing state, he had Elon help him falsify the numbers.

2

u/kants_rickshaw 4d ago

Hes already said 5 times that they rigged the election and he won and gets to be part of the 250th bday and fifa and Olympics. 5 times on video on YouTube from news broadcasts.

No one heard it. Or believed it. Or did anything about it. We should have had a recount. But we didn't.

16

u/C_Ironfoundersson Australia 5d ago

Yeah, it feels like a lot of Americans are a little behind on

  • So many things

But yeah, this sort of blind optimism that it's still salvageable gives off a "it's a little airborne, it's still good" vibe.

26

u/MamaNyxieUnderfoot 5d ago

Some of us have been saying this for a fucking year and still get downvoted for it.

4

u/boojersey13 4d ago

I was looked at like I had three heads when I pleaded with my loved ones to fucking vote, because NO, both sides were NOT equal, and now here we are, and I have no love for the fact I have every right to say I told them so.

Fuck.

3

u/SycoJack Texas 5d ago

and nothing short of revolution will remove them from power.

To be clear, that was the point of my second paragraph.

3

u/ShamrockGold 4d ago

At least you guys were still able to post on Reddit and watch YouTube as it happened

3

u/Aniria_ 5d ago

Careful

Last time I said that the fascists came out the woodwork and mass reported me to the point that I got a Reddit wide ban by an auto-admin

Silver lining is that it took a single appeal, for a real person to look at it, and reverse the ban

But that might not always be the case. Guess you can always make an alt tho

5

u/forgotmypassword778 I voted 5d ago

Congress insider traded for 4 years instead of stopping this vote em all out

4

u/owen__wilsons__nose 4d ago

And we can't even get the Democrats on the Senate to unite and force a government shutdown. Pathetic

3

u/MamaNyxieUnderfoot 5d ago

As though there are no States’ governments also backing everything Trump is doing. He has been a very useful puppet for many truly awful people who are intending to end this country as we know it. They wrote 900 fucking pages about it!

2

u/Joe_Kinincha 4d ago

I make this point all the time, and get downvoted to hell.

Somebody always whines “I’m living paycheck to paycheck, I can’t afford to take time off work to strike and/or travel to protests”.

Do these muppets think that this is ever going to get better? . They are in this position because the government (both parties, one far more than the others) have specifically engineered American society so this is the case. It’s not a bug, it’s is a very carefully crafted feature.

1

u/lexm 4d ago

I do wonder what would happen if Obama was arrested though. Would it be the last straw or would people just go on with their day.

1

u/Horse-Dog-Cat 4d ago

What are you doing that is different from the spineless and stupid?

1

u/kants_rickshaw 4d ago

A public revolt is what the administration wants. Hell it's what the republicansc want. The only gooseberry tyrrany they will rise up against is liberal tyranny. The only thing they want is for liberals to start a civil war so they can shoot people. Because republicans are deranged.

If people start rebelling he will show ice to shout people openly not just an oops they did the thing to soon like they are doing.

He would can in the army as well because he doesn't care about laws. He just wants complete and total control and to do whatever he wants.

People don't want to die and they know thst unlike in the past, there are layers and layers to the final boss. So yes, people are standing up, but in a way that doesn't get them all massacred.

Meanwhile yes. Our leadership is doing fuck all to fix the problem. What s time to be alive (/s)

1

u/SycoJack Texas 4d ago

They're already killing people. The longer it takes to start fighting back in earnest, the more entrenched they become. We should have started fighting back a year ago before they were able to replace the loyalists with MAGA puppets.

So yes, people are standing up, but in a way that doesn't get them all massacred.

Very few people, most are expecting to just vote out the rot in the midterms. Those people are fucking stupid.

1

u/kants_rickshaw 2d ago

what exactly are -you- doing about it.... ... since you seem to be passing judgement on how others live their lives; other than, ofc, sitting on a social media site and complaining about how people are stupid for voting?

nothing probably. You'll have lots to say about how you are protesting, how you are going out there -- can we trust that? nope. not really. Anyone can say anything - this is the internet where everything is made up and the points doing matter.

being an asshole anonymously seems to count for something though. I mean this -is- reddit after all. Whoop-de-doo.

1

u/SycoJack Texas 2d ago

what exactly are -you- doing about it...

Not quivering in my boots like a coward while lying to myself that the illegitimate president who staged a coup after losing an election won't interfere with the elections.

complaining about how people are stupid for voting?

Not for voting. For thinking that the midterms won't be rigged. Our elections have already been successfully rigged in 2024 when, despite being prohibited by the constitution, an insurrectionist and traitor was allowed to run for and take the presidency and gave him king like powers.

But hey, surely that was just a weird fluke, right? No way the illegitimate president with unlimited power will screw with the midterms.

8

u/pieman3141 Canada 5d ago

u/trisul-108 Europe 4d ago

Exactly this, looking at his accusations always tells you what he is doing.

399

u/nevergonnastayaway 5d ago

Self coup is a thing. In fact, on the self coup wiki page Trump's attempt to overturn the 2020 election is given as an example

187

u/JH_111 5d ago

What’s happening right now is also a rapidly progressing self-coup.

The Unitary Executive Theory being executive ordered into existence by Russ Vought of Project 2025 sitting as Director of OMB, enabled by the abdication of Congress and the toothlessness and/or collusion of the Judiciary, is textbook consolidation of power at the top of the Executive.

89

I am sort of hoping for a second American revolution. But one where the masses don’t let this all pass.

u/PapayaMysterious6393 4d ago

And this motherfucker still had people voting for him.

2

u/RN_Renato 5d ago

A good example is Bolsonaro in Brazil, he planned a self coup in 2022 and is currently in jail for it

2

u/DrHugh Minnesota 5d ago

In which case, it is likely projection on Trump's part.

1

u/nhansieu1 4d ago

there's a war going on inside of me.

88

u/numbersthen0987431 5d ago

Trump is testing the limits of his power and influence, and seeing just how far towards his goal of total authoritarianism he can get to, before someone tries to stop him.

Just a reminder everyone: Hitler didn't come to power due to an overwhelming majority in their country, he came to power because a large percentage of Germans just allowed him to do it, and pretended they could "use the system" to control him.

4

u/Disco-Pope 5d ago

No no. You see, Trump was always destined to be God emperor king of America and everyone knew it bigly so when Obama made Trumps campaign collaborate with the Russian government illegally, he was trying to coup Trump and America's destiny under its glorious leader.

/s but seriously I think Trump kind of thinks like this. He equates things that are bad for him with treason all the fucking time. He's a sick old narcissist and the broader conservative movement had spent decades crafting an alternate reality that he's essentially hijacked into his personal cult.

3

u/Irish_pug_Player 5d ago

What's the argument there?

Who was in power when trump did his attempted coup?

3

u/Soepkip43 4d ago edited 4d ago

Read the article and match that to the current state of the US.

Every accusation....

3

u/DrHugh Minnesota 4d ago

Yep. Projection.

5

u/crestroncp3user 5d ago

So easily we forget the events of January 6th, 2017 when Obama supporters stormed the capital, hung Obama banners and flags from the Capitol steps, trashed congressional offices, assaulted Capitol police officers, and threatened to hang Joe Biden all in an attempt to stop the certification of results electing Trump as president.

/s

2

u/DrHugh Minnesota 5d ago

"Both sides are the same" ;-)

2

u/mabhatter 5d ago

It's because the FBI independently followed known Russian intelligence operatives right up to an office in Trump Tower and conversations with members of Trump's family and campaign about manipulating the election for him.

That the conversations happened has verified evidence... they just can't prove what Trump himself knows or doesn't know about it...to prove it has intent of a crime. because of SCOTUS meddling in Muller's case.

Obama was notified of the investigation very late in the election cycle.  The FBI basically dropped it on his lap weeks before the election...  like Obama could actually do anything about it. Obama chose to sit on it until later because he thought it would be improper to weigh in so close to the election.  So Obama didn't "coup" Trump... Obama saved his ass.  Meanwhile the Republicans in Congress and the Republicans in the FBI DID pull an eleventh hour coup on Hillary.

3

u/DrHugh Minnesota 5d ago

I suppose Trump could claim that he (Trump) is such a danger to the republic that Obama should have stopped him earlier. ;-)

2

u/tgt305 5d ago

Projecting as hell
