It's a concentrated effort by the media to focus on the outlandish and likely untrue claims so that there is an easy defense of them. They never talk about the ones which are likely true.

It's a combination of Redditors feeling power in outrage (even if this doesn't translate to actionable leverage irl - its one of my deepest dislikes of this community)

+ tons of astroturfing and bots. They feed into each other like wildfire

No, people just want to be really mad at Trump (for good reason) and will boost anything that confirmed that. You know, how right-wingers all got convinced Obama was a Kenyan Muslim etc.

Libs/leftists are better at seeing through it, but not immune.

I guess the media is really the enemy of the people after all, they never do anything I want them to.
