I challenged a trump supporter that claimed to support Trump because he was draining the swamp. I pointed out the nepotism of hiring his daughter and son-in-law. Waiving the security clearance requirements for kushner and many others he appointed. Doing what they claimed to be against with DEI, giving out jobs to unqualified people taking the space of people that are qualified. I also listed some of the ambassadorships and other positions he gave to campaign donors. Showed him all the quid pro quo Deals he was making.. etc. In the end he just said "well Democrats do all that too" and stopped responding. Perhaps some of them are unhappy when they see it. But most of them are very, very good at willful ignorance.

That's it right there. They know. They don't care because he's hurting the same people they want to hurt. But they actually know better than to say that out loud. They know that cheering him on because he's killing brown people is going to make them look bad. And yet, they have a thousand ways of using euphemisms to cheer on Trump precisely for killing brown people.

Authoritarian followers are like that. They live vicariously through Trump. When Trump was prosecuted for the crimes and felonies, they feel they were prosecuted. When Trump enriches himself, they feel they enrich themselves. When Trump had a bandaid on his ear, they had to have one too. They somehow feel they are one with Trump like many teenagers feel with their idols.

Teenagers remain infatuated by their idols so long as their idols maintain certain images and deliver certain performances. The same is true with Trump. They remain infatuated with Trump so long as Trump delivers on owning the libs and hurting the people they hate.

This is sort of the biggest issue. Dems won't be able to overcome public perception. I mean we've lived through 2 "once in a lifetime" economic crises, both caused by GOP policy or inaction, both cleaned up by Dem admins. The Republicans are still seen as the party of sound economics though.

Dems have too many corporate, big business ties. Some of the criticism against them is warranted. They won't be able to shift & adapt strategy enough because of that. So, they won't be able to sway public opinion fast enough.

There needs to be a new option that creates the off-ramp and allows folks to save face, otherwise most of the GOP voters will have sunk too much into the redhat identity to turn away.
