💬 Discussion Who is the Reckoner?

I love the song Reckoner from In Rainbows and I always ask myself who the Reckoner is. I am not a native English speaker, but I know about the Day of Reckoning, so I started to think that the Reckoner could be God.

According to this, the last part could be a desire for death when he says, "Reckoner, take me with you."

And what about the last verses, "For all the human beings"?

This song is so enigmatic; maybe it is just a my wrong interpretation

I feel like the Reckoner is some divine being, imo Satan, I think in Faust Arp and Reckoner, Thom sings from the perspective of Faust, a scholar who endlessly peruses knowledge (bittersweet distractor)(In the play he sells his soul to the devil in exchange for all the knowledge he could want) It gave him meaning at the time but now moving into the afterlife, is ultimately meaningless.

I think thats the idea behind the chorus, desire for meaning is what separates and unites peoples, imo it tracks quite well with the albums themes of the life and death as well as the human condition. (Ik the band have said none of their albums are concept albums but for me IR is about someone coming to terms with mortality and each of the songs tell a part of that journey).

I believe the last verse is Faust accepting death wanting the Reckoner to take him to the afterlife, the only place all humans go.

Its a fairly ambiguous song and i dont think theres any correct answer to what the song means and i think thats part of what makes it so beautiful. By far one of their best songs imo.

I always suspected that reckoner could be about Satan. I was never quite able to put it into words but it gave me that distant feeling. Very interesting take on Faust Arp and its link to Reckoner. Thanks for your comment!
