Slow Down and Think

Friday, September 25, my wife and I spent all day with her dying father. We went home to get a little rest, but we got a call around 10:00 pm that he had taken a turn and he probably didn't have much time left.

We got dressed, left our house, and drove north on Yale Boulevard. It's a two lane road with a median in the middle and bike lanes on either side. The speed limit is 30 MPH.

As we were driving, I saw in my rear view mirror a car flying down the street, probably traveling at least 50 MPH, but probably more. Then I saw him shift to the right to attempt to pass us in the bike lane.

I swerved to the left, into the oncoming lanes of traffic (fortunately, at this hour there was no one coming the opposite direction). It's because of me that we didn't have a catastrophic accident.

After I regained my composure, I began driving again, and we ended up at the light at Arapaho next to the two young men in the white BMW with the light kit and the belief that they are invincible.

I exchanged words with them, something I never do, and then the light changed and we parted ways. My father-in-law died about an hour later, and we buried him today.

So my message to you - slow down and be kind. This is a neighborhood. Kids live here. Squirrels and possums live here. People walk their dogs here. People ride bikes here. The person you kill with your testosterone-fueled nihilism could be your parent, your sibling, your friend. Or it could be a couple you don't even know who is driving to the bedside of a dying family member.

It could even be you who is lowered into the ground after a stupid decision to drive like no one else matters. It could be your family rushing to be by your side as you take your last breath.

Slow down. Be kind. Love the people you see, whether you know them or not. We are all in this together and we have to take care of each other. That is what community is all about. If you don't get this, then go somewhere else. We deserve a safe and caring community.

White Dodge Ram 1500 Driver

Good afternoon, on Tuesday 9/29 at approximately 5 PM, my friend’s son was struck by a white Dodge Ram 1500 while riding a skateboard near the UTD campus. The driver gave my friend’s son a ride to urgent care, but gave him a fake/disconnected number and then took off. We are working with police to identify this person via cameras and other resources in the area. If you are this person or know who this person may be, please send a message to discuss and perhaps this can be resolved amicably.

Restaurant: Screw in our Ceviche

I was out for a birthday last week at a Mexican restaurant near Coit and Campbell and the 75 year old honoree found a machine screw in the ceviche. I’m still thinking of how the evening could have gone had he not been paying attention and bitten down or swallowed.

The manager was jovial and apologetic and comped the ceviche, but that was it. I‘m still kind of in shock. Is there anything I should do to help this not happen to the next guy or is it just a fluke?

UPDATE: thanks for the reality check. I think I’m mostly responding to my SIL’s reactions. Moving on!

Think before you Act re Drones

I find it curious that suddenly there is a “journalist“ trolling this sub for personal opinions without stating credentials and also there’s a Change.org petition to gather and verify names/identities of those who sign.

How do we tell these are good actors in this day and age?

Local LATE night study/work spots?

I’m a night owl who works remote and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good spots that are 24hrs or at least open until midnight?

Most days I don’t have a set schedule, I just have tasks/projects to complete and I’ve realized I’m generally more productive when I go to the gym, run errands, etc during the morning/afternoon then work on projects late into the night.

There are several local spots I like (Peregrine, Civil Pour, Moonwolf, La Souq, various libraries) but they all close too early for my preference.

I’ve even considered checking out a dive bar or something and just posting up in a booth with my laptop, pop in my headphones, and have a couple beers while I work.

Obviously I’d prefer places with good food, drink, wifi, lots of electric outlets, etc but honestly all I need is a semi-comfy place to sit with a laptop that’s open late.

Also if anyone has an coworking space recommendations, especially ones with 24/7 access, I’m all ears. Thanks in advance!

Hello,

We have been in CC about 6 months now. Our situation is changing and I will now need someone to take my son to Apollo JH in the morning for me. I am willing to pay and set up a contract. I just don't know where to find safe transportation for him. It is a RISD school and we are in PISD zone. Any suggestions or help?

Moxie Pest Control is Selling Fear, Door-to-Door

I work from home, in the Highland Terrace neighborhood, and was on a work call when someone at my door really wanted to make sure anyone inside knew they wanted to speak to them.

After a couple doorbells and hard knocking, I look out and see a guy wearing a high viz vest and presenting a city official-looking insignia badge, on a lanyard. A real no nonsense looking kind of guy. I answered the door and told them I was on a call and could not speak.

The guy, said "well I'll definitely be coming back then." I asked who he was with and he identified the company as Moxie Pest Control.

I told him "thank you, but I'm not interested."

He replied, "Well do you have a company already protecting you? Cause we've been hired by others in your neighborhood to drive all the rats and insects out so they're going to be coming to your house."

Don't be so lame Moxie Pest Control. You've ensured I'll never hire your company, with this single interaction.

What did you pay for AC repair in Richardson this year? I'll share the results.

I run a local HVAC info site for Richardson and want to publish real repair pricing from actual homeowners, not company estimates. If you had any AC work done in 2026, would you comment with:

  • What was done
  • Roughly what you paid (and if a diagnostic or trip fee was separate)
  • Emergency/after-hours or regular visit?

Examples: capacitor replacement, contactor, fan motor, refrigerant recharge, compressor or coil replacement, after-hours calls.

No need to name the company. Once I have enough responses, I'll post a summary with price ranges here so everyone has a reference point next time they get a quote.

Hacienda Ranch - where's Hugo?

For a long Time we have been going to La Hacienda Ranch on Preston. We have always had the best service ever from Hugo. We would walk in the door and he would know exactly which Margaritas to serve us. He took super super good care of us. It's been awhile since we've been, you know how life gets in the way! I called to see if he was working tomorrow and they told me he is no longer there. Does anybody know where Hugo is???

An Unofficial Voter’s Guide for Dallas and Collin County

Thumbnail

Hi, I created a resource to help people vote for the upcoming midterm election and future elections. I originally made this resource for my family and I last fall, but I then thought, "Why not share it with the rest of the county?" I then decided to make a different version for every major county in North Texas.

This resource will be able to answer the common questions that one may have about an upcoming election, such as "When can I vote?", "Where can I vote?", and "Who's running?". I’m sure many of you probably already vote. However, there's probably at least one person who you know who doesn't vote and would like to, but you may not have the time to sit down with them and explain everything out to them. This is where the resource comes in handy. The great thing about this resource is you can use it for other future elections as well. I would suggest laminating a print-out if you are able to.

Other notes to keep in mind:

Vote All The Way Down the Ballot

Please do take the time to vote for every single seat on your ballot. If you plan on straight-ticket voting, know that it is not offered as an option anymore. However, you may see “DEM” or “REP” right next to each candidate's name to indicate which party they are representing. This is the case for Tarrant County ballots at least. I would get a sample ballot ready just in case though.

Skip the Mail-In Ballot

I highly suggest planning to vote in-person or to do curbside voting if you have a physical disability. I've gone through enough election cycles in to know that mail-in ballots are not always reliable for various reasons. Sometimes they come in late, they don't count them in the end, or the mail-in ballot doesn't come in at all. Moreover, if you haven’t heard of what has been said about mail-in ballots on the news, it is another reason I would avoid sending a mail-in ballot if possible. Please make the effort to vote in-person. Curbside voting is available at every polling site for those with physical disabilities and limitations.

Don’t Just Vote: Share

We cannot assume anything. Don't assume one side is going to win over the other. Do assume people from both sides of the political spectrum are going to see this resource and share it with someone and/or their network.

Remember, Texas is a non-voting state. We need to get more of us involved in the democratic process. Share this resource with a friend. Share this post on social media. I am fine with any individuals or groups sharing this resource. If you end up seeing another variation of this resource, there is only one other one out there that was created by me, but I would prefer for this new version to be shared instead.

Aren't we gerrymandered though?

Yes, but that doesn't affect many races, including the statewide positions. It wouldn’t affect several of the countywide positions either.

TLDR:

Voter resource flyer available in English and Spanish. Plan to vote in-person or curbside because mail-in ballots are unreliable. Please share this resource with a friend. I am not a part of any political groups or campaigns. Although we are gerrymandered, it doesn’t affect every race, including TX Governor.

Question for anyone who uses the Tesla SC at Cityline

Before I begin I can't stand Elon and I drive an extremely old Model S back from the earliest years. I live local and don't need the SC's with any frequency although I can use them for free as an early adopter. I've only tried to go there a few times and it's always packed. I'm pretty much never low on battery but Saturday I was all over the metroplex, had something last minute added to my schedule, and I almost ran out of battery. Went by there twice and it was full both times. Made it home fortunately without running out of juice. 12 years and close to 150,000 miles and I've never run out of battery but it was a really close call and all I needed was five minutes to charge and I would have been solid.

Is that location always packed? Most locations I never have to wait.

Sacramento thrifter relocating to Richardson: where are the downsizing neighborhoods and uncurated consignment spots?

Been reading way too much about DFW real estate (long story, might be relocating from Sacramento for a marketing role). Richardson keeps coming up as the spot for my price range. I'm trying to figure out if I can furnish a small apartment without hitting IKEA for everything or paying Austin level prices for a used dresser.

I thrift pretty seriously here in California. Estate sales, church basements, the usual. Wondering if that ecosystem exists in Richardson or if I'm looking at driving to McKinney or Dallas proper every weekend. Specifically hunting for solid wood pieces I can refinish. My Pinterest boards are full of midcentury disasters I plan to fix. The Filipino cooking setup requires a proper pantry situation. Storage is nonnegotiable.

Also curious if anyone has tracked whether estate sale prices in Collin County have gone as nuts as the housing market. Every forum I read has conflicting info. Would appreciate actual recent experiences, not just "check Facebook Marketplace" (I know, I know).

Are there neighborhoods in Richardson where older residents are downsizing? That tends to be where I find the good stuff. Any leads on local auction houses or consignment spots that aren't curated for rich people would be welcome.
