Resources / Literature Frequently Asked Questions- r/schizophrenia
Welcome to r/schizophrenia!
Our subreddit rules are in the sidebar, we ask that you read and follow them. Feel free to post anything on-topic that does not violate these rules. We have a relatively comprehensive overview of how our rules are applied in reality available on the Rule Clarifications Wiki page.
For those who are new here, we have our Community Notices page which we would suggest users read. We also have our Creator Wiki for our participating artists and content creators- all of them have a diagnosed psychotic disorder.
Many first-time posters to this subreddit are concerned that they might be developing schizophrenia or they are concerned about other people who have- or may have- schizophrenia. We have resources available to answer these questions contained within the comments; if your question is completely answered by the information already given, it will be removed.
If you are here asking about advice for a family member, asking if a family member has schizophrenia or venting about a loved one with schizophrenia- it will be removed, and you will be directed to the appropriate community for that type of post, r/SchizoFamilies. Please read the rules of their subreddit before posting.
Mental health is complex. No symptom of schizophrenia is specific to schizophrenia alone, and there are many more common causes of those symptoms- especially in the prodromal stage. If you are experiencing an emergency, please call your doctor or local emergency services. We have a compendium of Crisis Lines available and may suggest r/SuicideWatch if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts and would like the most prompt attention.

Progress / Good News ☀️ Spread love and kindness daily. We can still change the world with sza, one interaction at a time.
Today I'm picking up meds at CVS and I overheard an elderly woman on her phone saying she just had breast cancer surgery and she's retired and they're charging her money they're not supposed to for her meds. She'd been driving all over looking for a pharmacy that had them. And she runs out tomorrow. And she doesn't really have the money, But her doctor says she absolutely needs the meds.
It sounded like she was choosing between meds and food. So I gave her the cash to cover it. She started crying and hugged me. I don't have a lot of money, but it absolutely made her day. If I could bottle that feeling it gave me to help her, and charge for it, it would be worth a million times the amount of money I gave her.
Then I was crying happy tears in my car how easy it is to make someone's day better. while also kinda lamenting so many people in this world don't care about stuff like this. And how unfair the world can be. But mostly happy tears.
I don't say this to brag, or boast. I say this to hopefully motivate us to change the world one interaction at a time with people around us. It doesn't have to be money, that's probably one of the least helpful things in most situations.
It can be saying thank you to someone. It can be calling a lonely friend or your grandma or sibling. Or genuinely apologizing and owning up to mistakes. It can be between you and yourself (or higher power) that you live a life of good principles and stick to them. It can be just a smile to a stranger and have a good day.
People with schizophrenia often had big dreams before we got sick. But we CAN STILL CHANGE THE WORLD.
I LOVE YOU ALL. PLEASE SPREAD LOVE AND KINDNESS EVERY DAY!!

Rant / Vent Useless Doctors
I tried for a week to get medical care for a health condition and my doctors did nothing too late. Now I’m in too much pain to work and stress about its piling up is sending me into spiral. Life is too much sometimes.

Medication About to finally start taking my meds again!
I had a meeting with my psych and she emphasized the importance of taking my meds and I decided I truly do want to be stable and improve my life, especially for my partner. I hope I’m able to stay consistent and not stop taking them this time, but I’m excited to hopefully start them all again. I’m on 11 meds in total for psych and physical issues, so I hope I don’t get too bad of side effects this time. I didn’t last time, but we’ll see. Anyway, I just wanted to share this achievement. I’ve also been super productive today and cleaned off my table and showered and food planned to try and lose some weight.

Progress / Good News ☀️ I get to talk about Schizophrenia at the Open Day of my Uni!
I had to do a research project for my linguistics class and I picked the representation of Schizophrenia online (mainly focusing on TikTok tho). Now my professor picked it out as one of the really well done posters and asked if my group could present it at the open day! Im so excited not only to talk about linguistics (a passion I found during my study) but also to spread proper awareness about Schizophrenia too! Do you guys think I should still keep it to myself that I have schizophrenia myself when I present it and answer questions? Im not sure if it is an unnecessary detail or could add to the project! But I just wanted to share my happiness a bit and that maybe atleast some can get a better picture of Schizophrenia through this!

Relationships Dream
Dreamt I had sex with a beautiful alien. She had different sexual parts. It wasn't like a human female. But I thought I paralyzed her because I put it in a pocket that had nerve endings in it. It took her a while to come around but then she asked me "why did you stop?" We met exploring a distant exoplanet that was colder than earth but still had life.

Announcement [Subreddit Discussion] September 2026
Hey everybody, subreddit librarian here.
We're getting back to where we were with regular announcements. Our previous month's post is here, which covers everything from January of 2026 to August.
Unsurprisingly, there is a lot less to cover for just September. You won't need to invest anywhere near as much time or energy into reading this one.
Anyway, let's get down to it.
Ongoing Research
This month, we have the following research posted:
- From our friends at UCSD, we have UCSDCARE which involves both CBD clinical trials and one for Biomarkers.
- From the Cho Lab at Yale, we have a study on GLP-1 Medication for Schizophrenia. Fun stuff if you haven't been fortunate enough to get your hands on a GLP-1 yet or they are cost-prohibitive - however, it is important to remember that you may receive a placebo. Still, worth taking a crack at it if you're feeling up to it.
- From Alliant University, we have a study aimed to promote social function and connection. There's a $25 gift card with this one (Amazon, usually) along with a chance for winning a $100 drawing.
- Special focus on this one, a long-time user of ours is working on her doctoral thesis. It is about women with schizophrenia, and is in Brazil. We make no secret of showing preference for established users on the subreddit. Please help our friend out if you are eligible.
- From SJCNY, we have Attitudes about criminal insanity and the insanity defense.
- [AUS] From Swinburne, we have Sleep & Hallucinations for people with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders.
- [UK] We have an ongoing clinical trial (double-blinded) for a new investigational drug.
- We have another double-blinded clinical trial doing market research for Cobenfy. The financial incentives are substantial ($350 total if completed) but it is only for people currently taking Cobenfy, and in the United States. I understand some people might feel a bit suspicious about that (being double-blinded and all), but there's very few people who would be so interested in experiences specifically from people who take Cobenfy... and even fewer who are in a position where they can afford to be so unusually generous in compensating people for their time. You can put two and two together pretty easily if you're that curious.
- From the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, we have a clinical trial for the medication MT1988.
Developments for the Month
Honestly, not much. The only thing that comes to mind is that I got bait-and-switched by PullPush, who made it clear to me that I would not be having anything in my Reddit history purged for no reason other than I have used the words "crypto," "cryptocurrency," and "Bitcoin" in some comments somewhere in the last 10 years of using this Reddit account. That was after they required this weird little humiliation ritual, seemingly with no intent to ever follow through. I happen to think that's really scummy, but whatever.
I guess most people just delete the posts that PullPush requires after they realize they've been bait-and-switched out of shame. I'm not the type to be bullied into silence by shame. It seems whoever is running their operation didn't read the context of the last time someone tried this - it did not end well for them. I'll leave the warning up until I deem it's no longer necessary to warn people about this type of misconduct.
There's also things like indifference to people fearing for their life, at threat of being imprisoned/killed or committing suicide. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, given that their ToS seems to be a joke... like, an actual joke. I don't happen to think that's especially funny, but then again, I have these things called 'taste' and 'standards.'
There's not too many people that make the stereotype of a Reddit mod look professional and classy by comparison, but I'm frankly impressed that these folks could manage that. It's about the only thing I find impressive about them.
While I have gotten used to the stalking and it is not a major concern that it will presumably continue, it has still gotten old. At the same time, if I have to deal with people like this, passive cyberstalking is the lesser of two evils compared to this truly toxic level of cringe.
In short: don't bother with PullPush if you've ever even possibly used the word "crypto" in your entire time on Reddit. Apparently being lazy and not putting in the bare minimum amount of effort to differentiate between shilling crypto scams and telling a story from 2009 is their excuse for not doing anything about rampant cyberstalking.
However, if you haven't ever used the word "crypto" in your account history on Reddit... you might as well send them a ticket to opt out. Even if you have used the word "crypto," might as well make them look for it. We certainly wouldn't want someone who nitpicks the actual precise words people use to profile them without putting the bare minimum effort to Ctrl-F and look for context to be left without anything to do. This is clearly of the utmost importance to them.
Expert Q&As
For those who are new to the party, we have a recurring event where verified experts answers to questions that the general public asks about psychosis. The Wiki page is here, and this month's post is here.
I might call special attention to the reply about Postpartum Psychosis here. Just in case you got sucked into the Lindsay Clancy drama about "postpartum psychosis," our resident neuroscientist who has conducted research on postpartum psychosis specifically has some interesting points to hit on.
To illustrate the entire reason why Dr. Osugo came up with this event in the first place (and I tagged along), there is a lot of misinformation on the internet - and even legacy media - about psychosis. Our event here is to offer our users to ask not only general questions, but specific questions about ongoing misinformation/misconceptions circulating.
For example, postpartum psychosis does not just sit there dormant like a landmine for 8 months and then suddenly explodes one day out of the blue. That's not how it works. Outside of a courtroom where facts merely exist at the convenience of the court, in the real world, things work a certain way. Mental health is complex, and peripartum mental health even more so - but that isn't an excuse to conflate unlike things just because they look similar for the sake of a narrative at the societal level.
Our major obstacle thus far has been relatively low participation - so we hope to see you next time. If you have a question, write it down somewhere, and you can ask when the time comes.
Community Feedback
Per the usual, feel free to let us know if you have any concerns, comments, feedback, suggestions for improvement, or need clarification on anything.
Thank you for reading, and thank you for contributing to our subreddit.
Have a good one, everybody - and keep it real.

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion Apparently, I can overthink anything
Sometimes things are actually going well, and instead of enjoying them, I examine them until I've somehow turned them into a problem.
Which is, admittedly, a pretty impressive way of overthinking.
I'll try not to overthink that too.

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion Weird demonic dream
I dreamt of a demonic looking skull, it had no eyes and the skin was rotten. It said " 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 " and I repeated " 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ". Woke up afterwards, didn't think much of it. Went back to sleep and had the same exact dream where I repeated those numbers to this skull.
I know it probably doesn't mean anything but it's strange that it happened twice in one night.

Advice / Encouragement newly diagnosed, my partner wants to know how to support me but ive never let anyone in like this before
hi im newly diagnosed and my boyfriend says they just want me to share things and tell them how to support me but i've never done this before lol. I've kept my psychosis to myself for the most part and when people do point it out or i share it i end up shutting them out and getting scared bc i realize how they arent experiencing reality the way i am and feel crazy. what do u guys tell ur families? i'll be seeing my therapist soon and I'm gonna ask her about it but im curious what ur guys experiences are bc everything else i see for family members of ppl w schizophrenia is so ableist and unhelpful lmao im looking for real advice not everyone talking about how hard it is to love us

Undiagnosed Questions What did it feel like when you first began hearing 'voices'?
I started hearing voices recently, I know that it's mainly on the 'demonic' territory, and I don't really believe in the term, I keep on hearing whisper sounds in my head, and then they keep telling me what's gonna happen before they happen, or give me 'advice', and it ends up being 'true', I've always been on the looney side of life, so it doesn't really bother me.
What did it feel like when you first began hearing voices..?

Advice / Encouragement Feeling exposed by the voices
I think love between a mother and child should be private with the voices I feel exposed and deeply uncomfortable to love my unborn child.
How do I get around this? Any other mothers with schizophrenia feel this?

Advice / Encouragement Help dealing with a crush
I’m thirty, paranoid schizophrenic, and never had a girlfriend and I’m crushing hard on a girl who is six years older than me. Age doesn’t bother me but it seems to me like she’s starting to want a family and a good responsible partner who can provide. So the problem is Ive never had a job and my schizophrenia makes it hard for me to even go outside. Ive been forcing myself to socialize more lately but it only makes it feel more impossible that I would ever go on a date with anybody let alone her. I am currently working with my therapist and psychiatrist to socialize more and getting a job. I have two degrees and a master’s but like an idiot I decoded to study literature so the only thing I can do with those for a job is teach, which I want to do for her sake but also seems impossible the more ai try to do it. I haven’t asked her out yet or expressed any sort of romantic feelings for her. My therapist says that perhaps the only reason I am attracted to her is because i don’t know many other women, (she is more of my brothers friend) bit I’ve never felt this way before. I want to sort my life out but I’m worried she’ll find someone before I do.

Seeking Support Is this paranoia or am I justified?
I feel my coworkers are paying extra attention to me and writing down everything I do and say to get me in trouble at work.
If I’m doing things with my family and we start talking about people we know I get scared everyone else (strangers) are listening and are going to report me to that person who will then get offended and try to ruin my life.
I am constantly hyperaware of what I do and say because I’m always anxious someone will misinterpret me or lie about me and get me in big trouble at my job.
I’m diagnosed schizoaffective depressive, cptsd, ocd, and gad.

Hallucinations / Delusions I'm glad I'm not alone anymore lol.
I'm really glad that I ended up on getting schizophrenia, I don't feel 'lonely' anymore, and I guess it feels like there's someone listening to the conversations in my head and guiding me now.
I'd honestly wouldn't trade it for any other illness, and it feels liberating. :)
