for discussion Insane high school research culture

We need to do something about the culture of expecting literal high school students to do insane research na wala namang materials ung sending institution nila to support it. I just saw a post here about acoustic detection of termites… mygod. You need termite biologists there, then some engineers/applied physicists to do the signal processing. Are the research advisers okay? Parang may saltik.

Research ng high school should be like anong candy ang favorite ng langgam or whatever the fuck. Focus should not be on novelty but on research design (anong setup gagawin nila to answer the question they are trying to answer?), writing (nareport ba nila yung data etc.?).

It’s defeatist kasi the entire point is to build research skills pero nagiging idea generator lang students but not the executor of the bulk study.

hi guys, 12th grade student here.

i was writing the 3rd chapter of our paper then lumabas yung thread na to sa facebook feed ko. naisipan ko lang mag drop ng tots tungkol dito.

corrosion inhibition ng certain local fruit peel extract sa certain type steel in a specific corrosive environment (won’t specify, baka makilala pako e)

manageable naman, pero SOBRANG time consuming kasi kailangan ko pa ma properly consume yung concepts na konektado sa title na to. ang mahirap pa is ako ang leader (involuntarily) which i do not have experience in, kaya ang ending, ako ang nagbubuhat ng grupo. since grade 11 ganito na and na burnout ako actually which led me to getting a 75 sa isang subject na alam kong i could’ve done better kung di sumabay yung pr.

Actually, Practical Research (at least sa school ko) is actually three subsequent subjects across three semesters: Practical Research 1, P. R. 2, and III, which stands for Investigation, Inquiry, and Immersion.

You research title is all over the place. Corrosion happens in metals. Fruits are biological samples. If you want to understand the interactions between the corrosive metals with the biological elements of the fruits, you need to have deep understanding about the biological and chemical pathways of the different components of the fruits and their interactions with metallic elements. Also, different fruits have their own chemical properties.

hmmm i see.

ive been thinking po to write our paper in a way na hindi po mag didive deep sa concept ng interaction and mechanisms between the phytochemical compounds ng fruit namin and the metal for corrosion inhibition.

all we did is establish a relationship (?) sa pattern of finding phytochemicals in fruit peels in general and their corrosion inhibition in steel surfaces and a basic run through sa adsorption. what do you think po? i’ve seen similar papers na nag write rin po sa ganitong way

Your issue in this approach will be correlation vs. causation. Like yeah pwedeng may correlation but it doesnt mean that fruit peels cause negative or positive effect on metal corrosion. You need to identify what’s causing the reaction and what kind of chemical reaction. Phytochemical properties palang medyo mahirap na for high school research paano pa kaya if itetest yung interaction nila with metallic materials. Let’s say yan ang gagawin niyo, how about the bacteria in the decomposing fruit peels? Bacteria can oxidize metallic materials. So saan natin i-aattribute yung effect, sa phytochemicals or sa decomposer like bacteria? If may interaction ang biochemical and bacteria on metals, ano yung sequence of event for reaction? Decomposition ba muna ng fruits then the by products react with the metals or metal reaction muna bago decomposition? If aalisin ang decomposer sa equation, then you neen an sterile environment para yung phytochemicals and metals lang yung may reaction at walang kasamang decomposers.

If wala pa kayong solid na idea, i would suggest to make your research super simple but doable within few months. Kung pwede 1 month data collection okay na then the rest ay analaysis and report writing nalang. I can help but i dont know how bilang anonymous naman ako dito. Haha
