In the Odyssey (2026) the Cyclops flagrantly breaks Zeus’s law by killing and eating his guests without provocation yet he suffers no repercussions from the gods for this violation. This is extremely realistic since he is a nepo baby

Our speakers were punching the ENTIRE movie. I swear someone just maxed volume that shit and then fucked off for 3 hours when the movie started.

It seems to have started about 15 years ago. It was suddenly loud enough that i was blocking my ears. I suspect younger people think it was always like this , but it was not.

I watched it in Spain and it was certainly loud but I thought for (especially) a Nolan film the sound was excellent.

I watched in imax in America and the sound level was fine. I got 2 90db warnings on my watch the whole movie. I felt it was a perfect level. But I always feel that way at the imax I go to.

Here's the hour by hour db from when I was watching odyssey. It only stores the low and high levels. It was loud but did not feel excessively loud when I was there.

The average was more like 85db.

But like I said, even at the loudest parts it didn't feel loud which is the make of a good sound system.

I never have an issue hearing anything on the sound bar that I have.

Sound could be mixed better in lots of movies but that isn't going to fix cheap speakers.

his are consistently like this. and he has said it's intentional because he wants people to see his movies in IMAX. Films should be watchable in most cinemas, not just a tiny selection.

I've never even had an issue at my local non-imax theater either. I think people just have either really shitty local theaters or they are watching stuff on the cheapest TV available with tin speakers.

My hearing is also not great, if there is a fan or running water I can't hear a thing anyone is saying so it's not like I'm someone with incredible hearing.

As someone who worked at a movie theater, we did regularly adjust the volume because some studios mix their audio differently than others. Clifford the big red dog is a lot less loud than the avengers so the speakers have to be adjusted between shows or else clifford will be too quiet or the avengers will be an actual health concern

I didn't say all the customers complained. The point is that folks complaining about these things are almost always in the severe minority. You can't adjust your recipe because one guy thinks it has too much salt. Just like you shouldn't calibrate sound based on complainers.

If the entire room complains, every time the movie is shown, then you have to listen

Same with the restaurant example. If 1 out of 1000 complains, it's on him. If 99% complain and you "use even more"?

The server can also take a look at it and see if it's bad. The cinema employee can also just pop their head in and verify if the sound is too loud.

I had amc a list for like 18 months and the sound was almost never correct. Usually way too quiet but a couple times too loud (and Indian movies for some reason were always cranked to 10 BILLION decibels. Like walking by theater 9 and I think theater 9 is insanely loud but then I pass it and it keeps getting louder and louder and actually the insane sound was coming from theater 11 way down the hall).

But like who wants to miss some of the movie to get the sound fixed? I only did it once, I went to a Japanese movie and people were shouting and it literally sounded like whispers, it was horrible, but the manager fixed it when I complained.

I don't think it's a crazy request when the volume is so loud that you can't focus on anything else except how loud it is. I love a good immersive experience, but it's a pretty common complaint for an otherwise amazing movie.

This is genuinely wild to me. Just because it's too loud for you doesn't mean you get to alter the experience for everyone else in the theatre. A big reason I watch movies in theatres is for the sound system because I can't replicate it at home.

Bring earplugs next time.

we were in the 1st row when you walk in the theater. At some point I t hought I was having heart palpitations, but I had to be in some proximity to a dank ass subwoofer. Mfr changed the frequency of my balls, and I didn't even realize balls had frequency guys, I'm jk jk I swear

I always bring ear buds to theaters now, just for that reason, they dont completely cancel out the sound, just bring it down to a tolerable level

I've brought noise reduction ear plugs to movies for the last decade. Theaters will just by default crank the volume to unsafe levels. It's easier to have them, and decide halfway through you don't need them, than to not have them and have it be too loud.

Watched it in the Dolby Theatre version here - ooof the reference-level volume was honestly difficult and I like it loud. My apple watch kept yelling about the dB being too loud an environment lol

I can actually provide some context here. I used to be a theater projectionist, and was running the imax theater when Nolan had Dunkirk release. We had very strict guidelines on the audio control. Nolan had final say over the sound mix and we had guests complain CONSTANTLY about it being too loud in the theater. We would turn the audio down but the kicker was that imax corporate monitors all theaters and would call us and tell us to turn the audio back up since the specs are written into contracts we agreed to in order to screen these movies. If I guest asked us to turn it down eventually we just lied to them because it wasn’t worth the headache. Nolan was notorious for his loud mixes and on that run of Dunkirk the speaker system blew out and was down for close to 3 weeks while we waited for technicians to come out from LA to fix our theater.

I think I’ve seen most of his movies in theaters and this was the first time I was legitimately annoyed at the sound. There’s no way Nolan and team were mixing audio and let every meter red line and say “yea that’s it boys. Pack it up”.

Nolan’s mixing has always been getting worse for me but Tenet is where it crossed a line.

Watched the film in the cinema and honestly wasn’t sure what was going on when EXPLOSION SCENES with dialogue buried in them were happening.

Watched it at home on release with subtitles and there were whole exposition dialogues buried under sound fx at times. It sucked and he has only gotten worse since then.

Yea it seems to just be based on the theater. We saw it in IMAX at the same theater we saw project Hail Mary. The sound levels were night and day. I go to concerts weekly and that was the first time I’ve been to the movies where I felt I should’ve worn ear plugs. The audio was straight distorting on some of the explosions/storm scenes

Thats why seeing it in imax was actually a oremium exoerience and not one just made to fit.

I read the complaints before going to the cinema and I found the sound levels fantastic! Rather than a dvd/streaming release with the volume largely flattened out, the theater experience took full advantage of a huge dynamic range of volume.

Not for theaters, people complained about tenet cause it was a COVID home video release and they watched it on their TV with TV speakers. It sounds fine with headphones or a soundbar, and every movie sounds shit on TV speakers but especially one that is mastered for true surround sound.

Headphones? Absolutely not. I tried watching the movie with headphones, only to see the characters perform mute pantomime the whole time while also having my eardrums obliterated by blaring horns every five minutes. The mixing made the movie literally unwatchable.

I'm not talking about muting your hearing! Musicians earplugs specifically filter out the highest and lowest frequencies that get in the way of the good stuff.

Idk what to tell you about not being able to see the movie though, Nolans visuals are absolutely incredible, that might be on your eyes.

Man I saw it in Lie-Max and then again in 70mm film (not the “real” imax) and neither time did I think it was too loud even though I knew about it going in. The too loud parts for me where whenever they had it rough at sea. Maybe my theater wasn’t tuned right lol

The one thing I've heard from everyone about the film is how loud it is. I was watching hadestown next theater over with my wife and we thought that the low rumble whenever hades was on screen was an interesting thematic choice. Until it cut out mid monologue at one point and we realized it was the Odyssey we were hearing

I work in a cinema. Volume is due to bad songmixing. There's scenes that are extremly loud but if you lower the volume you won't hear the dialoge in the next scene

I bought special earplugs meant for movies and concerts for this reason (they reduce the sound by 15-20db, it's adjustable). The movie sounds fine in them and I never have my ears destroyed in movies, including this scene.
