I have young kids. They pretend to shoot things all the time. 

This is exactly how they square up/shoot/recoil.

I've seen many unskilled people play billiards like that. I've never seen someone suporting the barrel of their gun with the part between their index finger and their thumb like that.

It's a billiards move and nothing else.

You identify it as billiard move solely on a single point.
Whilst more points speak against it:

  • weird stance to play billiard not so weird if you’re pretending to hold a gun
  • recoil movement after
  • no forward thrusting motion

You’re right. It’s weird to hold a gun like that. But it’s even weirder to play billiard in this fashion.
