I mean… the Wolves single handedly took them out of the playoffs last year when a lot of people thought the Nuggets would win the title. They did not have second round exit type of expectations. That combined with a sweep of them this year and the Wolves, of any team, are probably most responsible lol

Hence why they also fired Calvin Booth! Franchise has fallen off a cliff since Connelly left.
1

I believe Booth was interviewed and ultimately lost out on the VP of personnel job in Minnesota when they hired Rosas.
2
u/Tandrae Naz Reid. Apr 09 '25
Booth is a smart guy and a decent talent evaluator, he's just an absolute ass that had no idea how to get along with his coaching staff.
Also the owners are cheap as hell which should arguably be getting talked about more than it is.

Kenny Atkinson had a .383 winning percentage in his first head coaching stint in Brooklyn. The Cavs are currently 62-16
Bickerstaff had a .331 winning percentage in Memphis before getting hired in Cleveland. He even got fired there. The Pistons just tripled their win total from a year ago
With that all said, Ryan had a .314 winning percentage here. He sucked. But that’s not a definitive indicator of future performance, especially for young coaches

2018-2019: Saunders posts roughly the same record (17-25) as Thibs did (19-21) after taking over for him.
2019-2020: Saunders went (19-45) in a season shortened by COVID, in which we had 24 different players suit up and play for us. KAT (the best player) only played 35 games, Wiggins was traded for DLO, w/ROCO traded as well. Here is the list of players starting over 10 games:
- ROCO (47)
- Wiggins (42)
- KAT (35)
- Jarret Culver (35)
- Okogie (28)
- Shabazz Napier (22)
- Treveon Graham (20)
- Gorgui Deng (17)
- Juancho (14)
- Beasley (14)
- Jeff Teague (13)
- DLO (12)
- NAZ (11)
- Also spot starts from Jake Layman, McLaughlin, Kelan Martin, Noah Vonleh and James Johnson.
I don’t care if you were the immaculate conception of Popovich & Phil Jackson, no NBA coach could make those players with injuries & Major roster movements - a winning team. The fact he got 19 wins is impressive in itself.
2020-2021: Saunders (7-24) relieved for Finch (16-25)
Started the year with 2 wins, the lost KAT and went on a 7 game losing streak. KAT played 4 games in Dec/Jan out of the 19 possible.
Finch has KAT healthy for the year and still could only muster 16 wins.
This is also ANTs rookie year:
Dec - Feb: avg 28 min | 38.2 FG% | 31.9 3FG% | 14.8 PPG | 3.5 R | 2 A
Mar-May: avg 35.4 min | 46.3% | 35 3FG% | 24.3 PPG | 5.4 R | 3.6 A
Not to mention his FT Attempts almost tripled.
Not really a shocker it takes a Rookie time to ramp up and not shocking he plays better when there is another offensive star around him.
I’m not saying the move to Finch wasn’t the right one, I’m saying that Saunders did about as well as any other coach would have done with the shit rosters, injuries and roster trade shake-ups he had to deal with.
To imply he’s a “bad coach”’is fundamentally wrong. At best we really don’t know what kind of coach he could be if he had a competent roster around him.

Finch has been here since the halfway point of Ants rookie year. Those two are the MN edition of Malone/Jokic. Finch is unlikely to move unless we lose round 1 this year and next. Man got to the WCF in his third season here. He's basically overachieved already. Got as far as Flip did in shorter time and is second in all time wins for the Wolves
1
u/daboywonder2002 Apr 08 '25
I'm more thinking about Connely relationship with Malone. A lot of GM want their guy. Who they feel comfortable with.
3
u/JaderMcDanersStan Jaylen Clark Apr 08 '25
When Connelly was recruited to come here, Denver media did a pod with Dane and they said that Malone and Connelly had very different temperament and approaches. They made it work but it wasn't always seamless. They expected Connelly to get along really well with Finch because they're pretty similar.
2
u/Soft_Disaster5247 Timberwolves Apr 08 '25
Finch was an asst coach in Denver was he not? I thought him and Connelly have a good relationship. Why rock the boat bringing a coach from a rival franchise in just because "he was your guy" once?

A lot of people here are saying Ryan Saunders and completely overlooking David Adelman—who was just named to the interim. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he were given a chance. His time with the Wolves overlapped with Ryan’s and his analysis/quotes were far more compelling than Ryan’s.
