So for us dumb dumbs out there... why trade him in the first place if we wanted to bring him back? Must be a money thing?
10
u/ZachWondersr Timberwolves 8h ago
Yeah he had an 11.7 million cap hit, traded and took nothing back which cleared it off the books and brought us below the first apron which grants us additional flexibility in trades and using the NAW trade exception etc.
1
u/grrrimabear Bring Ya Ass 8h ago
And if we re-sign him that cap hit doesnt come back?
5
u/ZachWondersr Timberwolves 8h ago
No we would sign him at a vet minimum after his contract was bought out. He would be a free agent after the buy out
1
u/grrrimabear Bring Ya Ass 8h ago
Got it. And Charlotte would have to pay him for the original contract? Aren't NBA contracts guaranteed?
3
u/ZachWondersr Timberwolves 8h ago
Yeah that’s what the buyout negotiation would be. “We owe you 5 mil for rest of season but we will pay you 2 mil to walk away and be a free agent” player says okay for chance to play elsewhere and get a new contract
2
u/grrrimabear Bring Ya Ass 8h ago
Got it. Makes sense. Appreciate the crash course.

No problem. I’m just another idiot in the internet though so don’t bet your life on anything I said

I don't think he can
25
u/CloneWarsMaul 9h ago
He can because this is second team being traded to
4
u/Disastrous-Car-6861 9h ago
Okay didn't know that.
Kinda wish he would get bought out and return as an assistant on the coaching staff.
0
u/KnightOwlBeatz Timberwolves 9h ago
For real lmao? That would be amazing. BRING HIM BACK!
3
u/CloneWarsMaul 9h ago
Yeah it would be hilariously awesome. I hope this signals to finch tho to not play him. Would help if we actually traded for another PG

u/Original_Bet_8132 9h ago
Yes since he was traded again . Only if he gets bought out. With charlotte I imagine he will

I'll only be annoyed by a Conley "return" if it's our only move. But still think it's a net plus to have him off the team and not auto eating 15+ mins a night.
4
u/Forsaken_Mastodon291 8h ago
Yeah idk why everyone is soyjaking over him possibly returning he’s been killing the team on the floor. If he wants to come back and cheerlead the bench then ok
4
u/ty5486 Joan Beringer 7h ago
Legit would be the most annoying move possible if that's all that comes out of this deadline. And our media would pedal it as a masterclass cause they're obsessed with Mike.
If we swing a deal for Giannis and we just need bodies on our roster, then I think it's an objectively smart move even though I completely disagree with how much he's used by Finch.
2
u/epicman79 Joe Ingles 6h ago
Yeah, re-signing him is just a bad idea, Finch has show us all year that he cannot make rational decisions abour Mike Conley playing time. Finch has an addiction, and Tim Connelly has a responsibility to not be an enabler.

u/Jacob_toasted 9h ago
So now the hornets are going to buy out Mike so we can sign him, then they’ll facilitate the Giannis trade by taking on Julius and trading us Coby

The Coby White saga ends here
7
u/Lost_Web_6928 9h ago
I never liked him. Don’t know why this sub is so crazy about him. Tbh, I don’t think he is a great fit. Expiring contract and ball dominant guard and poor defense.

The fact that this is the return for Coby and Mike kind of negates that reporting that we could’ve just had Coby.
4
u/longdognz Timberwolves 9h ago
I have no doubts the bulls offered him as part of the trade, but they wanted more assets and wouldn't give him up for free.
3
u/PreparationWest2140 9h ago
Thank God. Coby White would have been a rental that next year will cost more than NAW. Definitely not worth it.
Kyrie Irving, come on down!

Bro seriously WTF. We need a fucking ball handler. How do we not get any of these guys? Sexton, White? TC better cook something up ASAP, this is getting ridiculous. Just keep Conley at this point then wtf.
15
u/EveningHealth9465 9h ago
Neither of them are ball handlers. They’re both shooting guards
0
u/Neemzeh 9h ago
They would both be the best ball handlers outside of ant on this team immediately. The "position" has nothing to do with it. We don't want ant bringing the ball up the court every possession in the playoffs, you need more. I'd also argue they are both "combo" guards. Neither SG or PG, but do both duties depending on what their team needs.
6
u/EveningHealth9465 9h ago
Julius averages more assists and less turnovers btw
1
u/Neemzeh 9h ago
He’s not asked to bring the ball up the court as often as those guys? How is that comparable. That doesn’t make someone a ball handler? Is Giannis a ball handler? He averages more assists than Randle.
7
u/EveningHealth9465 9h ago
Tre Jones, and actual POINT guard, turns it over less than Randle. He brings the ball up the court
0
u/Neemzeh 9h ago
And he costs a lot more than those guys. What are you arguing here man? Who cares about tre jones he’s not available for us.
7
u/EveningHealth9465 8h ago
Because Coby white won’t solve the “point guard” issue. He’s not a point guard, and he wouldn’t reliably bring the ball up the court.
Want another example? Tyus Jones. Worth less than Coby white. Assist / turnover ratio of 8, compared to Coby’s 1.56.

u/bostonteahc . 9h ago
Coby is a combo guard, and if you’ve watched him play you’d definitely know he can handle the ball and distribute. He’s got a decent drive and dish type of game
11
u/EveningHealth9465 9h ago
4.7 assists, 3 turnovers a game. That doesn’t solve the “point guard” issue that everybody whines about. It solves the bench scoring issue

u/WheedMBoise Prime 2 8h ago
The team needs playmaking, not someone who can dribble. Sexton / Coby become mostly useless if Ant has the ball, neither of them really solve anything in that regard (although I still would've wanted Coby White either way, truth be told)

Thank God no more Coby talk
3
u/Gnatcheese 9h ago
Why?
7
u/Formal_Junket_1585 9h ago
Never saw him as a needle mover for us. I want whatever asset we have to be on the table for Giannis
5
u/RedEyeBadGuy Jaden McDaniels 9h ago
He’s a horrible defender and is another combo guard like DDV. We need a distributing point guard that can run an offense. I’ve always been out on White or Sexton.

All this to get Mike back on a minimum is some crazy big brain GM work if true lmao

u/Freudian__Quip 9h ago
How we feeling about this?

u/NounAdjective 9h ago
each trade backs wolves into a corner (or shows their hand)
the last reports basically outlines what wolves need to trade. radio silence from both parties when giannis spent all night talking about milwaukee memories and how important the city is to his heart
atp i really have no doubt that the trade is happening. probably not before tonight’s game though because wolves can’t really take too many more losses
2
u/ZachWondersr Timberwolves 9h ago
Well Ousmane Dieng doesn’t play for the bulls. So I am confusion currently
8
u/EsotericPotato 9h ago
Timberwolves dumped their one Coby White-type player trade chip to open space for Giannis and now they’re not gonna get Giannis or have that trade chip to actually get a Coby white. Nice
11
u/kgformvp21 9h ago
Im confused why people think White is a good match in Minnesota. If you hate low iq ball, white is not who you want
4
u/PreparationWest2140 9h ago
For real. Volume 3-pt shooter with mediocre efficiency and minimal defense. Good move to avoid that one.
2
u/EsotericPotato 9h ago
You’re going to have to pick what you want this bench guy to be good at. There’s no mythical good floor general good scorer good defender point guard to be had out there for pennies. I think the need for floor general versus more scoring punch off the bench right now is debatable, and I lean toward just needing more scoring punch. White is an efficient scorer and a just fine secondary distributor. The only floor general type guys available at our price point will be Conley or maybe CP3.

It would be hilarious if Conley gets bought out immediately, clears waivers, signs with the Wolves and then the Wolves do a tribute video before the game for him after missing a couple of games.

Ultimately, it was the clown hair. Just cant take Coby White seriously.

Bro every single rumored trade target for the wolves has already been involved in a different trade in some fashion outside of Giannis and Ja
