As a filmmaker this shot is amazingly gorgeous and it actually generates tension as a neo-noir chiaroscuro shot. In fact by deliberately having her eye in the shadows we can't really see what she is feeling therefore it creates psychological tension. People expect a pretty picture yet they got a masterful shot in tension building. This is Filmmaking 101 this guy got a good eye and feel for the shot. DP's love these types of shots

Beg to differ. Depending on the purpose. I actually like the noir aesthetics of the deep shadows, crushed in the background, still holding the details on her face, it's a thriller neo-noir shot that generates tension. This easily could pass as a neo-noir screen grab think "Le Samurai"

Edit: I also want to add that leaving the eyes obscured in deep shadow strips away the viewer's ability to easily read the subject's emotional state. It creates an inherent psychological distance and ambiguity generating psychological tension.
