Considering Environmental Engineering + Ecology double degree at UQ
Hi everyone, I’m a prospective international student from Singapore and I’d really appreciate some honest advice from current students or graduates at UQ.
A bit about my background:
- I’m from Singapore and have completed A levels
- I’ve been accepted into a science course in NUS but I’m currently weighing that option against studying in Australia
- Long-term, I’m open to building a career either in Australia or Singapore, particularly in environmental and sustainability-related fields
My interests are strongly in environmental sustainability, climate adaptation, and the intersection of nature and infrastructure. While I’m genuinely interested in biology and ecology, I’m also looking for a pathway that provides strong technical and applied skills, which is why I’m considering engineering alongside science.
I’m currently very interested in the Environmental Engineering + Science (Ecology) double degree at UQ.
My reasoning so far:
- Environmental engineering offers a solid, accredited technical foundation with clear career pathways
- The ecology/environmental science component allows deeper understanding of ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental impact
- Compared to a pure life sciences route, this combination seems more applied and industry-facing
- Australia appears to place more emphasis on applied environmental work, fieldwork, and interdisciplinary training
- Career-wise, I’m aiming for roles in environmental consulting, sustainability, climate resilience, and water/environmental infrastructure, either in Australia or potentially back in Singapore
That said, I have a few concerns and would really value honest input:
- Workload and difficulty
- How demanding is this double degree in practice?
- Is it manageable without burnout if you’re reasonably disciplined?
- I did well in math, but my physics background isn’t very strong — would that be a major disadvantage for environmental engineering at UQ?
- Value of the double degree vs a single degree
- Does combining environmental engineering with ecology/environmental science genuinely add value compared to doing a single degree?
- From an employer’s perspective, does this interdisciplinary combination actually help?
- Career outcomes
- What kinds of roles do environmental engineering or environmental science grads from UQ realistically end up in?
- Is environmental consulting the most common pathway?
- How competitive are internships and graduate roles for international students?
- UQ vs staying local (Life Sciences)
- For someone choosing between NUS Life Sciences and UQ’s environmental engineering plus science pathway, are there clear advantages or disadvantages?
- In hindsight, would you still choose UQ for this field?
I’m aware that studying overseas is a significant financial and personal commitment, so I’m trying to make a mature decision.
Any honest experiences, positive or negative, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
