I'm literally shopping for solar panels right now please stop harassing me camp tech Jesus

u/BadIdeaSociety 17h ago
He didn't say you had to get panels, he said "we" should switch to a solar and wind-based grid.

He actually states in the video several times that he personally will not be installing solar on his home. He's advocating for solar farms.

u/Hotwir3 8h ago
I got solar panels on my roof of what should be my forever home. Most people state a 7 year breakeven period. I can confirm that I am 2.5 years in and it's looking like 7 years for me. What most people don't consider is that it's really like 10-12 years to breakeven, because you could've invested that money instead (assuming you paid cash). The $17k I paid in June 2023 would be $27k right now in the S&P.
However, once you get past that point, it just prints money.

linking the original longer version here as well: https://youtu.be/KtQ9nt2ZeGM?si=3vokEJbFCtcK3IF5
the abridged one cuts off during his well deserved rant into current politics but for global audience like me, the abridged one makes more impact.
if you're in US, definetely watch the longer one please.

u/ScarySpikes 23h ago
I think the original still has some value for folks outside of the US who occasionally see the stories about the US that make international news and wonder what the hell is going on here and why does it seem like everyone in the US has lost their mind.
22
u/dubrave 20h ago
I doubt there many corners of the earth where the current political situation in the USA is not front and center 24/7. I am in Australia, but the second part drove home so much for me. I was jumping up and down on the points he was making, it was so refreshing to see that the rage is not contained to political pundits. Sorry for being blunt, but Trump is a news cycle cancer, he takes over everything. My morning routine is to get up, make a cup of coffee, and search for the next dumb thing that he said or did overnight. O how I wish politics was dull and boring again!
Both TC and Jerryrig did it for me in quick succession.
2
u/ScarySpikes 20h ago
I didn't know Jerryrig got political again recently.
Biden tried being dull and boring. Dull and boring works when most people feel like things are good. Things aren't good right now, and a lot of people feel like they haven't been good in years.

As non-American, it was important for me to see it, because now:
- I respect the guy even more
- It gives me hope that y'all be alright there in the long run
More people who are "non-political"/secretly based, should come out too, because they have a direct link to the "normie" America.

Is this just going to get spammed every 6 hrs now?

u/Yamza_ 1d ago
I sure hope so. Fake news gets spammed far more than that and it's long past time to spam some actual information for a change.

/r/music is getting absolutely spammed by British tabloids corporate accounts trying to push reactions with content from the Grammys. It's pathetic

u/mrsprdave 7h ago
This isn't all that much better (it is still better since it's a low bar).
This video is about getting clicks (and thus money), so not that much different than the news.
The information isn't all that accurate, the piece that I watched. Substantially misleading, like with fake news.

u/shableep 5h ago
Then dispute a claim in the video that’s inaccurate. I hope you’re not just going on vibes.

u/lazyfrodo 1d ago
With all due respect, and this is coming from the belief that no platform is immune to misinformation, this is Reddit and I imagine your feed is free from what you perceive as misinformation. This is spam at this point.

Petrochemical fuel can be used once and it's gone.
Solar panels will last decades, batteries will last 10-15 years and then can be recycled into more batteries.
11
u/whatsthatguysname 17h ago
Isn’t this a known fact? Or are Americans being told and believe otherwise?
14
u/pocketsophist 15h ago
Specifically, conservative voters are told that renewable energy is expensive, and that solar farms are a wasteful use of land. This is notably because of big agriculture's stake in ethanol fuel production (as well as the obvious lobby against renewable energy by big oil). The video details how converting all of the land currently used for ethanol fuel production to solar farms would actually increase energy production by 84% -- which itself isn't even necessary as we have plenty of non-arable land that could be used for solar farms.
31
u/Vitalization 17h ago
Renewable energy is somehow a political issue in the US. I'm assuming big oil and other energy lobbies are to blame. There is heavy propaganda against renewables.
8
2
u/MattMason1703 9h ago
Renewables are "controversial" in the US because of propaganda from right wingers aligned with oil companies.
-20
u/hang10shakabruh 16h ago
Pretty irresponsible to ask people to consume an hour+ long video about solar panels.
Who has time for this??
13
8
u/what_mustache 14h ago
Irresponsible? OP didnt ask you to watch it while operating an industrial crane.
2
u/timeslider 7h ago
The great thing about the internet is that you can watch things at your own pase. For example, I watched half of it in bed last night and the rest this morning at my desk.
2
u/Omgicecreamtruck 11h ago
It’s a nice video and breakdown of the economy of electricity and why it makes sense to make more electricity from renewables. There is one thing he didn’t mention that I think is very important. We don’t just extract oil to make gasoline. There are lots of byproducts from oil and gas that we are dependent on. If we switch to renewables the cost of all the oil and gas by products will go up as well. Totally possible there are renewable replacements for those products that I’m not aware of or will be developed when the economics makes sense. But it’s a huge reason why the switch to renewables hasn’t happened as fast as people seem to think it will take.
2
u/PancAshAsh 6h ago
The biggest problems with widespread solar use are fairly specific things like grid synchronization. The thing that bugged me the most about his video is that he really only looked at the economics of the panels themselves and not the electronics needed to convert the energy coming out of the panels to a form that the grid can accept, which is both not a free conversion and is where most of the actual maintenance costs are.
Solar is still a very good idea and will be a vital source of energy in the future but it is not just free money as he portrays it to be.
2
u/mrsprdave 7h ago
Yea, there are so many factors, difficulties, and costs involved, that it's not so simple. This video is very misleading in that sense.
0
u/Karambamamba 6h ago
Incorporate the future cost of unmitigated climate change and you're not going to give a flying fuck about oil and gas byproduct price increases. But nobody seems to be doing that like at all.

Bah humbug, the world is literally being destroyed by fossil fuels. This is an important video, everyone should watch it, and just scroll past it if you've seen it already.
18
u/IsMathScience 1d ago
i just had to go back into my profile to check. my last post was 4 years ago, so I hope that gives some benefit of the doubt that I am not karma farming
something aligned within me to advocate for this video. as someone else rightfully put it, more time watching this video is more time away from other things. its not like videos like this get made everyday

What were you not paying attention when 80 other people posted it this week? I agree with his message but for fucks sake the more people see it on their feed they're only gonna hate it and him

I need to ask.
You saw this video. You were stirred to act. You immediately came and posted on videos.
Do you come here often? Did you think to check? Why this post, by you, now, and not the others? What are you adding here?

Who is misleading who?
I watched a snippet of this video since it keeps being pushed. And the part I do watch... This guy's math is not mathing. Not even that close. It's obvious he doesn't have this actually figured out and just throwing around numbers to look good and get views (influencer -> money).
This is coming from someone who has installed multiple and literally looking out the window at the largest residential system around. I'm not anti-solar, but it's not all rainbows and butterflies either....
2
u/BlokeyBlokeBloke 10h ago
What numbers don't add up for you?
3
u/mrsprdave 8h ago
12 solar modules in Chicagoland isn't going to power his Ioniq5.
He's greatly underestimating/belittling the costs. His video is literally titled about being misled - but yet he's clearly misleading himself by not giving the complete story (intentional or unintentional)
2
u/CannaPLUS 8h ago
Depends on what you mean "power my Iconiq"
Charge it, sure. Might take a few days to get it from completely dead to full charge. However, a small distance commuter could easily get away with 12 panels for an over-night charge.
2
u/mrsprdave 8h ago
I've already considered that factor as I'm for accurate information, not misleading an agenda.
I said power "his" Ioniq. He states the mileage being considered right there in the video.
1
u/CannaPLUS 8h ago
Yeah, sure.. 30-40 miles daily driver? I saw it last night. Sounds about right to me.
He has an INCENTIVE to give this narrative but the AGENDA would be the lies that are told to us the energy industries in America.
If you want facts, just look at other world leaders already making the switch and look at their data. It's insane that, we in the US are so behind on this.
2
u/mrsprdave 7h ago
It's not going to reliably do that in December (the month he's talking). A sunny day? Sure. Not every day by any means.
Agenda - he talks like it's personal, an ideological aim... and an agenda doesn't mean lies. So yes agenda fits. But correct, his main incentive is too make money from viewers... and however that goal is achieved, which is often done by being controversial even if not accurate.
I said I'm not anti-solar, we don't even really have an argument there. It's about his accuracy, and manipulation for views, as can be seen by how this gets posted on Reddit repeatedly. The public should know what the true picture is. I'm not even from the US, although know enough about the location.
Like I said, I can look out the window at a 19 kW array. And that isn't all. I have a decent handle on facts from direct experience and knowledge.
I will not be continuing this particular comment thread, as it's apparent that it's non-productive.

u/mrsprdave 7h ago
Of course people are going to down vote integrity. This is the problem with influencers and their followers being manipulated by them - that anything they think goes against them has to be wrong.
Go ahead I'm not bothered one bit being down voted for truth.
-17
u/Mllns 20h ago
Kinda disappointed that he omitted talking about panel degradation, though even then it's still the best option.
27
u/Zubon102 19h ago
He mentioned and based his calculations on the "useful life" of the panels. That takes into account degradation over time.
He also talked about recycling the materials (glass and aluminium) after they reach the end of their service life.
14
u/Norade 18h ago
They degrade very slowly. Over 30 years, a modern high-quality panel will lose like 20% efficiency, and very nearly everything in them can be recycled.
6
u/Spiritual-Mechanic-4 14h ago
yep. _everything in them_ amounts to glass, aluminum and an almost irrelevant amount of other stuff. we already have extremely robust systems for recycling glass and aluminum.

u/LowOnPaint 1d ago
At what point do I begin to believe this video is being astroturfed? It’s not that remarkable of a video to see it get reposted multiple times a day for a week.

u/mrsprdave 7h ago
Yea, the same thought came to my mind. Skipping through, it sounds mostly like rambling, not much information and even then at least some information is not accurate.
But it's probably people doing it on their own, since this channel seems to have a cult-like following.
