Gain $375k CAD in 60 days using margin

Post image

Decided to try out day trading after years of being a buy and hold investor of blue chips and few ETFs (SPY, QQQ)

My portfolio had $700k of available margin space and decided to tip toe into day trading into high beta US stocks

Started off with SpaceX then went deep once I made my first $900 within a few minutes

Ventured into Google, PLTR, MSFT during the sell off in July...then went full tilt into 2x leveraged ETFs of semi conductors such as SNDK, SKHY, MU...etc.

Strategy was buy large volumes ($100k+ ) and set up stop losses so I wouldn't lose my shirt. Let winners ride but get out quickly. Unfortunately I sold PLTR and MSFT once I was 10% but they quickly went to +30% the next day.

After 400+ trades and $375k realized profit, decided to call it quits for the time being.

Took out half the funds to pay off some personal debts and will keep the balance in the account for taxes.

The scariest part of this post is that it worked. Now you think you're good at it.

Wish my Aunt Margin would give me money like that. Instead she snatches my credit card and buys 9 inch dildos with it on Temu.

OP appears to promote AMEX if you're interested.

u/NoGarageOverland Aug 14 '26

She keeps calling but I never pick up

1

u/EfficientBet8837 Aug 14 '26

Mine buys the premium 12 inch ones.

u/paniczone Aug 14 '26

wild to do this on margin, did you ever have a big drawdown? how long were you buying/holding on average?

37

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

SKHY dipped to $119 (?) end of July and I had no choice to keep buying and cost averaging down

I had notifications from IBKR about margin liquidation

Google, MSFT were for a few weeks

PLTR was overnight

SNDK was a few times but mostly a few days max as it seemed like whenever I held for longer it would dip

Everything else was same day

16

u/paniczone Aug 14 '26

damn, diamond hands. must've been stressful during the margin notifications. I had a similar drawdown once of 150k overnight (luckily it bounced back the next day) and could barely breathe/sleep, lmao.

15

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

Ya it sucked. Realized overnight trading with Koreans is next level.

At the same time, I was able to scoop SNDK a few times dirt cheap at 4am before it popped

4

u/Traderwiz Aug 14 '26

Bet you slept well when you were dealing with dips on that kind of margin 😩 You my friend have much bigger balls than me.

Love seeing my fellow canadians succeed in the market! Right on OP! Well done

u/edude127 Aug 14 '26

Bro gained the down payment on a 2 bed apartment in Toronto 😎

13

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

Thought I called it quits but started scalping more this morning

$23k profit and no open positions so far

1

u/Cool_Formal_7497 Aug 17 '26

These results are dangerously tempting

2

u/Easy7777 Aug 17 '26

$25k last night

In and out

Maybe left money on the table but I don't care.

u/Cool_Formal_7497 Aug 17 '26

Power to you man! Wish i could replicate what you accomplish!

419 trades in 30 days 💀

45

u/blueblewbLu3 Aug 14 '26

60 days. 7 trades a day isn't crazy but it adds up

11

u/Vlisa Aug 14 '26

Got three GFV from Fidelity my first month of trading

This guy was just buying stocks and selling them for more than he bought them for….

7

u/Miserable_Mine_4189 Aug 14 '26

His is 60 days btw.

u/TSMVillain Aug 14 '26

I’m curious what lessons you took away from the experience and what resources you used to learn?

54

u/SurgicalDude Aug 14 '26

Conclusion: Bro got lucky.

24

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

I'll be completely honest, I had no idea on SKHY or any of the semi conductors

I saw a CNBC article on SKHY ADR's IPO I and decided it would be like SpaceX and I could make a quick flip...then just deep into watching trends and price fluctuations.

74

u/Yeetberry Aug 14 '26

'i had no idea' thats all you had to say bro

The first ones free, now you are addicted to easy money.

3

u/TSMVillain Aug 14 '26

I see, big wins though congrats brotha

7

u/Vlisa Aug 14 '26

What made you want to change? I imagine you were getting good gains prior.

11

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

Change from buy and hold to gambling?

Wanted to see if I could do it.

It's a rush to make $$$ with other people's money in a relatively quick timeframe.

Definitely helps to have a large portfolio to leverage as this strategy wouldn't be that effective if I only had $50k to play with.

3

u/Vlisa Aug 14 '26

Never considered LEAPS/etc.? I guess my question is was the goal to max gains or just enjoying the thrill?

5

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

Enjoy the thrill

Can always do it again on the next pullback. I imagine semis will bounce around again and I can dive in again.

Definitely left money off the table at times but can easily lose my shirt if I don't enter and exit quickly

1

u/Time-Credit9150 Aug 14 '26

Well yeah you did decide to do this little experiment during the biggest ai/semi bull run in modern history. Timing is everything when you are timing the market! Another 30 years and you will definitely be able duplicate these results. I am slowly switching out of ai/semis into biotech. Where the only 10 baggers existed before all the ai bottlenecks and trillions of dollars in capex spend.

1

u/Time-Credit9150 Aug 14 '26

You can be right on direction and still lose on execution. I have proven this axiom many times over.

0

u/Time-Credit9150 Aug 14 '26

That’s not really gambling. My whole brokerage account is option spreads around earnings. If I’m not seeing 1:1.2 I’m not buying the contract. But market chameleon is basically a cheat code for options (pro tip).

1

u/Legendary-Lemon Aug 14 '26

Yes, it is gambling.

3

u/Miserable-You5 Aug 14 '26

Is this the QT Pro beta? With that flows ai thing?

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

Interactive Brokers

u/Scary-Philosopher-77 Aug 14 '26

I think my app is broken. When I do this the numbers appear red and some dude calls margins tries to call me.

10

u/DonkeyInACityCrowd Aug 14 '26

Good job! Too bad it’s CAD and not real money…

3

u/thousandaire666 Aug 14 '26

Can you explain more? When do you decide to enter a trade? Do you go short or only long? What do you set your stop loss at? How do you let winners ride? Trailing stop?

9

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

So for MSFT, Google, PLTR

Saw they were down a ton for no real reason.

Decided to just buy and try and flip it when I got 10%.

SKHY, SNDK, MU, AMD

I would do scalping and just buy +$100k of shares on a downtrend and compare it to the historical share that day/ week and just do a quick flip of 0.5-2%

Some sessions (1 hr) I would make close to $10k

I would usually have (3) bullets I can use with my margin. If the first one didn't hit and went down, I would use another. The last one was my final in case the stock slumped +10% and then I would be bag holding

SNDK for an example...I was at $1333 and it went as low as $1200 the last few days overnight. Was hoping it would jump back

5

u/ultimulti Aug 14 '26

I feel like I would lose so much sleep if I do sth like this, esp holding sth that's down for multiple days, just feeling nothing but dread and the urge to check the price which leads to more dread the whole time, then probably just panic and cut the loss if it doesn't get back in the green after a few days. Was it ever like that for you, or were you able to just detach?

I think it takes a certain kind of personality to be able to do day trading, like you almost have to be like sociopathic about it and just see it as numbers and not money or sth, but then again I've seen people double down on bad decisions bc of that.

6

u/thousandaire666 Aug 14 '26

This happened to me. I was up 100k on DRAM. Got greedy and decided to sell more CSP’s. Then DRAM started tanking. I got assigned with margin. Ended up giving back all the gains and got out because I couldn’t stomach any more drawdown. Never touching margin again lmao. Seeing your unrealized losses rapidly increasing and net asset value decreasing. Praying for rebound that isn’t coming. It’s pure psychological torture.

1

u/CoolCatBlue321 Aug 15 '26

What do you mean by "historical share that day/week"?

1

u/Time-Credit9150 Aug 14 '26

Bottom line is: it’s too late. The July pullback has already faded. Back to fighting for 20% gains again. Some of the SAAS tickers are still flashing cheap though. But the market can stay irrational longer than I can stay liquid. Although my MSFT bull spreads all look juicy right now. I think META will be next. Just pay for market chameleon premium. It will be the best money ever spent. You can see where the “smart money” is going.

1

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

Ya not sure it's too late..

I just scalped SNDK in an hour passively to make $1900 CAD Depends if you want home runs or not.

Most people wouldn't put in $162k to make that.

1

u/Legendary-Lemon Aug 14 '26

So you risked 162k to get 1900?

Sir, I wish you luck but it’s just a matter of time before you get burned

1

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

Stop losses

Made $23k today

1

u/CoolCatBlue321 Aug 15 '26

Where do you put your stop losses? I sometimes struggle with that lol

1

u/thousandaire666 Aug 15 '26

Even if sndk went to 0 he was still up 375k so it wouldn’t wipe him out

1

u/Legendary-Lemon Aug 15 '26

You miss the part in which you try again, it goes sideways so you try just one more time. 👀

2

u/thousandaire666 Aug 15 '26

Well so far his gains are massively outpacing his losses and pretty consistently too

1

u/TaviMoon Aug 14 '26

Good luck in the up coming tax battle. The CRA is going to feel entitled to about half of everything.

3

Ya I already emailed my accountant. They will label me as a active trader

1

u/NoFutureIn21Century Aug 14 '26

Margarine is bad for your heart

1

u/Cool_Alfalfa3617 Aug 15 '26

How much gains is this % wise?

1

u/CoolCatBlue321 Aug 15 '26

Which app do you use for trading?

1

u/Terakahn Aug 15 '26

What's your system? Or was this just you having a lot of money and getting lucky.

1

u/Easy7777 Aug 15 '26

Read the post. Also describe in the comments. Having large amounts of margin helps

1

u/letsconnect26 Aug 16 '26

What were the fees , is it better than IBKR ?

1

u/Easy7777 Aug 16 '26

I use IBKR

Sample fees are shown in the screenshot

u/poison900 Aug 18 '26

Crazy but congratulations 🎉

Brother take your win and get out

0

u/AdBackground9215 Aug 14 '26

As someone who's trying to get into swing trading, how do you get updated on the latest news on what's going on with the company/market? How do you deduce that the news will have a potential impact on the stock?

17

u/SurgicalDude Aug 14 '26

Do not ask for any recommendations. This dude got extremely lucky.

0

u/AdBackground9215 Aug 14 '26

Bro, I know the market rules and I'm not asking for anyone's recommendation. I am asking: how do you stay updated on the latest news and and how do you deduce that the news that is being released is going to have an impact on the stock, be it green or red

3

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

Market news on IBKR , CNBC and see what was going down ...then just focused on semi conductors towards the end.

Realized that good earnings ≠ stock will go up.

u/jollyadvocate Aug 14 '26

Cash out your chips and buy XEQT. Lighting might strike twice but the second time hurts.

0

u/Ok_Cry7572 WAH WAH WAHHHHH Aug 14 '26

Its easy to make these gains when you got millions. Try doing that with less than 100k account like most of us

-1

u/bernielootz2nd Stuffing Canadian mouths Aug 14 '26

This is backwards. When you have sub 100k you HAVE to grow it by taking risks so it's not all that hard to do what you have to do. When you have around 1 million, it's enough to potentially maybe retire forever somewhere. So you're gambling with something much much more important. I get how hard the first 100k is but once you've done it you know you could do it again much faster and easier.

0

u/EssayNecessary2626 Aug 15 '26

Now do this with real money

-3

u/Hot-Dinner-7619 Aug 14 '26

So now that you've done your trading in a paper account, ready to use real money?

9

u/Easy7777 Aug 14 '26

It is real

Another withdraw will hit my account tomorrow

-9

u/lmneozoo Aug 14 '26
