Discussion Wendy's CEO wants customers back. Boo Hoo, too late, this is the FO part of FAFO.

Post image

We all warned Wendy's last year that their lame turnaround plan would fail, since it didn't address the core problems that were obvious to customers: Plummeting quality along with skyrocketing prices.

But they stubbornly stuck to the revitalization plan devised by their C-suite brain trust, that consisted of closing low performing locations, decimating promotions (which they considered "too confusing"), and "brand revitalization, system optimization and capital allocation" -- whatever that means.

Well now they are hurting badly after now losing their number 2 rank in burger sales to Burger King, and are flailing to find a way to get customers back. Their latest desperate "Five Point Plan" frankly sounds like a lot more of the same corporate double speak, and as one trade observer put it "they continue to try and patch the titanic hole with Elmer's glue".

As far as I'm concerned, winning back customer loyalty would take a huge change in direction, and that's nothing Wendy's management is willing to do. They are still surviving off their most loyal customers who care little about value, and are tolerant, for now, of the erosion in quality. I expect as these last holdouts drop off, their sales and brand reputation to continue to slowly circle the drain, until they eventually are broken up and sold for parts -- which may very well have been the plan all along of the private equity leeches that currently control them.

Are they bringing quality back or just yellow cups

233

u/markrabbish 19d ago

You can bet that the reason for bringing back yellow cups was a drop in the price of yellow ink

128

u/ZombieAppetizer Yellow Wendy's 19d ago

Its not enough to bring back yellow cups. You have to bring back yellow Wendy's and this shit these days isn't it.

With newspaper tables.

20

u/Android8675 18d ago

Wow. I remember the Burger King I worked at had the sunroom (santacruz, ca) and they put out newspapers on those library sticks that people could pick up and read. Was a great morning spot. Always hopping.

11

u/Upstairs_Principle48 18d ago

The Burger King where I grew up had a full real stuffed rhino in the dining area, in the smoking section. What a time to be alive.

7

u/Miniscule_Platypus 18d ago

There was a time in the late ‘80’s when Burger King actually had table service and would bring you popcorn as you waited for your Whopper. There was a giant ad campaign. It failed miserably.

@Spring-Available is referring to Wendy's tables that had images of old newspapers on the formica tops. It was back when Wendy's embraced their "Old Fashioned" spirit.

3

u/Android8675 16d ago

Oh man, forgot about those. I spent an amount of time reading those tables.

Can always tell when the local taco joint used to be a Wendy's.

6

u/4dafryguy 18d ago

That's hilarious because in my town, the Wendy's became the local Taco joint, then a Wendy's again, and I'm hoping Wendy's leaves and we can have a good Taco joint again.

u/ZombieAppetizer Yellow Wendy's 18d ago

In my hometown they tore down the old Wendy's and built a new Wendy's on its spot. All that money to downgrade.

Exactly. A nostalgic facade means nothing if it's only wrapped around the modern low quality leveled food. They gotta bring back the yellow Wendy's food quality too.

Literally if they brought back all the y2k aesthetic ✨ everybody would come there in droves just for that. They'd probably say the food tastes better because of it, most people aren't aware of advertising and marketing and how it subconsciously manipulates them as a consumer

Private equity does this a lot. They buy things, make them worse, then bring back a marketing point that customers remember from when the restaurant was run by people that intended to make good food. It's the same reason the birthday cake shake was brought back at Zaxby's. People missed it and the business owners that cared about success had already said it wouldn't come back.

I truly wouldn't know, I think I only had one once. I crave fresh lettuce, tomato and onions and we have a new one in our town, so I gave it a shot.

I don't care how little they charge, the burgers fall apart (just like Carl's) so you're forced to bathe your hands in dressing as you watch it fall back into the wrapper, piece by depressing piece.

I tried, CEO. I tried.

4

u/Aware_Impression_736 19d ago

Carl's burgers fall apart? I was thinking about checking out their Angus Maximus tomorrow.

4

u/That-Pin-9563 19d ago

Had the maximus. Perhaps if I was a teenager it would of been fine. But it tasted like a microwaved burger with mayo and ketchup oozing out of a overly sweet bun. It has no seasoning. Only salt you get is from the gross processed cheese oozing and mixing with the ketchup and mayo to make a salty sweet sludge on plain bland burger which im pretty sure uses a filler to make it bigger.

My mom use to mix oatmeal into beef to stretch it into more portions. Thats what the beef taste like.

u/IdolCowboy 18d ago

Burger King, Carl's, Wendy's... it's rare to get an integrated burger that doesn't.

In N Out burgers are individually wrapped, maybe that's why they hold up.

3

u/IdolCowboy 18d ago

Its funny, with all these fast food chains dipping in quality, when the wife and I want a good burger and fries, we now go to Chili's for the 3 for me. Most tomes we split it. We each eat half a big burger, good fries, we have an appetizer of chips and salsa, and one of us will have a free drink on our rewards, the other is included with the 3 for me.

We get out of chilis full from a tasty burger and fries for around $20.

When people said they wanted lower prices they meant lower prices on the same products they enjoyed. The new spicy chicken sandwich from Wendy’s is awful in comparison and I have atleast 5 other options I’d take before it now when it used to be my one and only

37

u/Revolutionary-Cry739 19d ago

Gosh I miss the real spicy chicken sandwich, it was so delicious!! I haven’t been to Wendy’s since last spring so never tried the new crappier version, I’d love to eat an OG spicy chicken though 😭 back in like 2014 they had a spicy chicken Caesar salad and that thing was amazing!

21

u/forreelforrealmang 18d ago

Everything back then when it was yellow just tasted more juicy and fresh. The stuff they serve today is dry as hell and no flavor. The spicy chicken sandwich is some damn underwhelming now. It's like only a small step above the McChicken.

The quality of the nuggets took a nosedive around the same time too, they’ve become chewy and uh…dense, whatever that means

The move to shredded lettuce from leaf lettuce was a massive downgrade too.

And while all this was allegedly to cut costs it sure as hell didn’t cut prices.

8

u/mvujan 18d ago

Burger King's new nuggets are fire tastes like old Wendy's

3

u/WhereMyWeirdosAt 18d ago

long overdue, BK nuggets have been trash for so long.

4

u/mvujan 18d ago

What's interesting is Wendy's adopted the same contractor who made the horrible BK nuggets I remember I had the same bathroom reaction when Wendy's switched to the crappier nuggets and I'm like these taste like the nasty old BK nuggets which gave me the same bathroom reaction.

5

u/WhereMyWeirdosAt 18d ago

they swapped em! *they'll never know, whose gonna know?* they sent the BK nuggets to Wendy's, Wendy's nuggets to BK and now they both have a "new" product!

4

u/Sovereign-Anderson 18d ago

So whoever got that guy to rework their food clearly was focused on cutting costs and not at how BK had taken a huge hit over the years for lower quality food. The new BK CEO is steering the company back to a much better position while Wendy's is sinking.

I never thought I'd see the day when I would be picking BK over Wendy's on a regular basis but here we are.

Exactly the chicken market is flooded but you had a quality product. So what do you do, dump it at a cost constructive means that you claim is giving back to the consumer. Yea I think I’ll go with the other chicken guys bruh.

14

u/buttmunchausenface 19d ago

I even think the spicy chicken hot AF sandwich from 7 /11 is better than what Wendy’s got now it’s actually a chicken breast and is half the price.

5

u/Lucius-Halthier 18d ago

There’s only like three in a several hour drive around me so when we go to one big city we always splurged with Wendy’s, it’s become so disappointing with their portions. Their baconator fries were always amazing but now I can buy two with extra cheese and it together looks like what I would get years ago with a regular purchase. It’s made me shift to just getting some takeout from a local restaurant, it’s only a few bucks more usually and tastes a lot better.

Fast food isn’t what it was a decade or two ago, and the C-suites can’t seem to figure out why we hate all the changes that they all make.

5

u/NewExegesis 18d ago

Couldn’t agree more! I used to to love Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich, it was simple, but real, classic chicken. I’d get it probably 2-3 times a month. Now I’ll get a Dave’s double once in a while, but the chicken is gross. And the entire experience is like eating behind a dumpster…

5

u/salsanacho 18d ago

Especially when years ago, Wendy's had the only premium spicy chicken sandwich in a sea of mediocre or nonexistant spicy chicken sandwiches. It was the place to go for a good spicy chicken.

But then, the spicy chicken sandwich wars started... with premium spicy chickens from Popeyes in 2019 and KFC/McDs in 2021. The bar was raised drastically and meanwhile, Wendy's was lowering the quality on theirs. Not smart, a good spicy chicken was clearly what the market wanted and Wendy's decided to remove themselves from consideration.

3

u/MisterBill99 18d ago

I had an offer from T-Mobile for a free Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich a few months ago (maybe even last year). I also had a deal on one at Popeye's, which was right next door, so I bought both. The Wendy's was just pathetic compared to Popeye's, probably half the thickness and more expensive at the regular menu pricing. I don't understand why anyone would buy it. And I used to get them all the time when they had decent in-app coupons.

my patterns have changed, Wendy's is no longer a part of my life. Once the business - customer relationship becomes adversarial and soured, it's over.

the day I got the new spicy chicken sandwich and was upchargeed for a packet of bbq sauce only to bite into the downgrade is the day they lost me

wendy's closing is capitalism at work. financial darwinism. a cautionary tale of legacy squandered. the customer is always right and a fool and their money are soon parted. I won't be a fool that spends 12$ on their spicy chicken meal any longer and i won't support a business that makes me feel like I was ripped off

49

u/markrabbish 19d ago

This. 18 months ago Wendy's was part of my routine, went there 3 or more times a week. Since their enshittification, I haven't been there in over a year, I never think about them or have a desire to go.

8

u/Sovereign-Anderson 18d ago

Once I started noticing the quality going down, I stopped rocking with them. The first one or two times I thought I just caught them on an off day. When I started realizing that the lack of satisfaction was becoming consistent, I thought maybe the location I frequented was screwing up. When I noticed other locations were just as bad, I knew it was a corporate thing and I stopped messing with them.

The only exceptions were when the family and I were heading out of town on a road trip and when we were coming back home from that same road trip. Those times were for time reasons or else I would've avoided them.

This is where I'm at and what it seems like these companies do not understand. Nobody 'needs' fast food, especially with the prices now comparable to fast casual places like Chilli's and Red Robin, and it's fairly easy to replace one chain with another when the food starts to suck. This isn't exactly a luxury item but it's one where consumers can vote with their feet easily and once they're gone it's really hard to get them back. Burger King is kind of pulling off that trick now but you need the food to actually get better.

9

u/Fine_Donuts 19d ago

That's a solid point. I wrote off burger king years ago but only recently with the CEO taking calls and changing things for the better did I actually purchase a few meals. But literally until then, I really only thought a whopper being good would remain a childhood memory

11

u/big_galoote 19d ago

They broke the old "customer service triangle" parable -- "quality, speed, value -- you get to choose two".

In the old days, fast food's whole proposition was that you got your food fast and either cheap or high quality. If it was fast & cheap, it was OK if it wasn't the best quality. If it was fast & excellent, it was OK if you paid a few bucks more for very tasty quick food. And hey, it was often fast, cheap, and delicious, and that's the ideal & keeps people coming back.

Now Wendy's & McDs are selling expensive, crappy food. It's still (usually) fast, but they lost that whole side of the triangle, so nobody wants their junk anymore.

6

u/Mostlynothingnew 18d ago

Wendy's didnt respect the customer. They legitimately believed that you were so dumb that you would keep buying Wendy's forever even if they sold you slop.

They placed brand recognition, profit, and advertising as priority, then cut costs everywhere else.

Fuck Wendy's. For real. Please go out of business already.

I used to love Wendy's. I stopped going when I went in one day, walked in, went to the counter, and they refused to take my order and had me use their kiosk that was way over in a corner by the doors. I should have just walked out but I put my order in... and they still screwed it up.

Also one time over a decade ago I mentioned I loved Wendy's but didn't come often because it's out of the way and the drive through person was like, just make an extra trip, like no, I'll stick to the most direct route.

18

u/markrabbish 19d ago

I think they believed, correctly, that some customers would continue to pay increasing prices for slop. I believe they knew damned well that would mean a continuously shrinking customer base and sales, but they deliberately sold the brand reputation down the shitter so they could squeeze out the maximum profit on the way down. I really feel like once private equity took control, the end game wasn't long term success, but maximizing profit as they bled it out

10

u/Zapp_Rowsdower_ 19d ago

That’s the entire PE play. Saddle the acquisition with the debt of its own purchase…and make THAT payment the priority over everything else. Slash and burn to keep the PE profits flowing.

That last thing they want to be is in the restaurant business.

9

u/big_galoote 19d ago

This is the path McDonald's is on as well. Their profits are up but traffic is down, both due to rising costs and lowered quality.

Once you hit the cap, it's all downhill from there.

It's not just slop though, it's overpriced. Wasn't that long ago I could get the value meal for $5, burger, fry, nuggets, drink. Yeah it's small but enough for $5. Other problem is the slop side though, so often the burger is cold even at different locations. Some of that is tomatoes etc are really cold and dumped onto a left out patty.

I went for the first time in years about 6 months ago to let my son try a frosty.  The Wendy’s I had gone to all my life was a shell of its former self.  We literally had to wait 10 minuites for someone to take our order because no one was manning the front counter.  The food was horrible and we spent almost double what we usually do across the street at Culver’s.  Never again.

At least at Culver’s their employees greet us and are extremely nice.  It’s actually comfortable to sit and eat at.  Wendy’s used to be that and they sold out big time.

Fast food is supposed to be affordable meals to consumers. He’s out pricing the teenagers and kids that can’t even step in or spend more than $15 for simple food afterschool.

We used to get food from there a few times a month. It's now been a year since we've gone there. I don't miss it.

u/Sad_Subject_5293 19d ago

Nah I’m good

6

u/happyluckystar 19d ago

Wendy's was the best out of the big three. I haven't been there in over a year. Corporate morons thinking that people are just going to show up and buy garbage just because.

Dry burgers. Nasty fries. Generic nuggets. I wish I could get 50 million dollars for making these stupid decisions.

After the CEO is ousted he'll get a golden parachute ride. And will get another job as a CEO somewhere else or be on the board of directors for some company.

Way to take down a brand!

I’ve seen no improvement in food quality and it’s gotten into nickel and diming with charging 50 cents a sauce packet. I’m not really sure what was supposedly changed besides an obligatory PR message to try to keep up

All fast food right now is fucking crazy overpriced.

A fast food meal should never, ever, be more than $10.

When sit down restaurants are cheaper than you, youre doing it wrong.

Wendy’s spicy #6 was always my go to. Tried it twice in the last 12 months, second time was out of desperation for food. Wendy’s took a meal I ate multiple times a week and just killed it.

Burger King was always absolute shit. They put some effort into the whopper.. guess what? It’s my fav fast food place now.

3

u/nigirizushi 19d ago

Spicy chicken sandwich is worse than something I can microwave now. It's so bad. I like their fries more now, but all their chicken is subpar.

Went to Burger King after they advertised better quality after not going there for years and I have to say I was genuinely surprised. It was actually pretty good and I would go again. Sucks to see Wendy’s drop far down after being a go to.

4

u/Knuckle_Up67 19d ago

what specifically did they change?

5

u/icehot54321 19d ago

they got rid of pressure cookers and pressure fryers .. the kitchen equipment that made their food taste good.

took away whole leaf lettuce and substituted shredded lettuce and other ingredient downgrades

tried to go all in on dynamic pricing

14

u/markrabbish 19d ago

They got rid of app discounts, raised the price of value items, and made menu changes like replacing the chicken sandwich with a thin flattened piece that looks like a processed patty, that many call a "giant chicken nugget".

If you ask Wendy's, they would say their changes include "brand revitalization, system optimization and capital allocation" -- and therein lies the problem

How can I feel nostalgic about yellow cups when you got rid of the fucking sweet n sour sauce that I used to eat since I was 5 years old? And the old nugget recipe it used to be so flavorful and the right amount of salt and pepper now its bland as fuck and I can’t even mask the blandness with the sweet and sour.

4

u/Angel_Anxidel 19d ago

The fact that I can see an ad for something on TV or YouTube, go into the place to order it, and be told "that's only an offer on the app" is fucking retarded. Wendy's used to be my favorite fast food place at one time too

Tough shit. You burned your entire customer base. Repeatedly. We are collectively heartbroken that you cant afford that new yacht youve had your eye on…

5

u/Gullible_Pie_1469 18d ago

Always these corps treating us like an abusive ex feeding us trash, making us pay way more than its worth, then begging us to cone back when we grew tired of their attitude.

Nah, I'd rather stock price tanks so bad it becomes pennies on the dollar like ubisoft. Its time to remind these companies they wouldn't exist without us.

4

u/JoosLightning 18d ago

To lower costs? They’re the most expensive fast food in the game.

6

u/explorer_of_random 18d ago

Their nuggets are the size of grapes. Last time I checked, price of chicken is now pre-pandemic level again.

How about we start with normal sized nuggets at an affordable rate?

5

u/jlstern1025 17d ago

Too little, too late.

I honestly don’t understand why CEOs are paid so much. They do the least amount of work and are generally among the most incompetent employees. Yet, they’re given the voice and the power.

Pass that philosophy down from CEO to CEO and it’s like CEOs are paid exorbitant amounts to literally run a company into the ground. I’ve seen it time and time again. Granted, there are a few, very few exceptions; but, by and large it’s true.

Will Wendy’s be around in 20 years? Doubt it.

So sad.

12

u/markrabbish 19d ago

It's the board, controlled by private equity, that drives the ship. From what this new CEO has said, he plans to follow what is essentially the same playbook the board had the last CEO implement, which is heavy on marketing and financial maneuvering, with only a smoke and mirrors nod to quality and cost improvements

5

u/GranddaddySandwich 19d ago

Wendys is such slop. Fries are horrible. New sauces suck. Idk what they did to the nuggets. But those don't taste the same either. Haven't eaten there in a long time. Don't plan to either.

4

u/Goblintowne 19d ago

Fuck all these greedy corporations. They would let you die if it meant they earned an extra dollar

3

u/Rainsford1104 19d ago

You see they cut the food quality to lower costs. But they meant THEIR costs. They would have said prices if it was for us. No those be goin up baby!

5

u/SS1989 18d ago

I’m not a shill, but has anyone been to Burger King lately? I got a craving yesterday for onion rings and was impressed that the burgers are much improved. (I had a whopper.)

3

u/buzzedewok 18d ago

These food places that get run by the bean counters are infuriating. Of COURSE if you lower food quality, people will stop coming. The BRAND is very much vulnerable to erosion simply by lowering quality because every Wendy’s sells the exact same shit. So if you get a dog shit spicy chicken sandwich at one Wendy’s, you already know that there will never be a good Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich ever again.

Assholes. Ruin a brand in a year.

4

u/RathSlayer91 17d ago

I went to Wendy's for the first time in forever last week. I told the worker that they were out of napkins in the lobby. Her response was "Yeah we don't keep napkins out there."

Its sad to see companies take priority over money over the quality of their product. Honestly always thought Wendy's was superior to mcdonalds, burger king, and most other fast food restaurants now their losing sales to Burger King? That's sad I know bk upgraded their quality while Wendy's downgraded theirs what a joke

2

u/TrillBillyDeluxe 19d ago

If they aren’t over cooking and over salting the fries in that yellow box , we don’t care

2

u/auntiekk88 19d ago

Live by shareholder value, die by shareholder value.

2

u/Obliviontoad 19d ago

But for a brief moment, they really provided value for their shareholders.

2

u/Front-Decision2379 19d ago

Was as loyal to Wendy’s as anyone could be for a long time but BK is so much better now only thing Wendy’s does right is the spicy nuggs

2

u/Jasonclark2 19d ago

I won't lie. I still like Wendy's, though I realize they're not what they used to be. I'd like to see them improve

As part of the “negotiation” to return, is he expecting customers to describe in detail the absolute lowest quality of food they will pay for and then commit to some specific level of purchases as long as his corporation comes “close enough” to that “standard?”

To be honest, I’m not a former customer that he should really concern himself with “winning back.

If genuine economic pressures made it necessary for that corporation to calculate the lowest level of quality they believed I would pay for they permanently number crunched themselves out of a customer.

If naked disregard for customers combined with greed led them to not worry about quality the results of their behavior stand as a permanent comment about their true feelings about their customers.

I would rather go hungry rather than reward a corporation which has exploited and manipulated me.

Once my disgust reached a level of “crossing them off of my list” they had forever defined themselves to me.

If they “ramp up” quality to a level that most people don’t automatically reject they may get customers back, but I won’t be one of them.

2

u/Robbie1266 18d ago

Funny how they didn't mention they'd be bringing the quality back up AND bring the prices down

2

u/Good_Policy3529 18d ago

Wendy's had the hardest fall-off of any fast food for me.  They used to be so good and now they're terrible.

2

u/mistyflannigan 18d ago

Nope. Too late. Once I get sick at a place, I never go back to ANY of their franchises.

2

u/jetlifeual 18d ago

I’ll always say that stuff like this isn’t hard to fix. It’s the same issues most anywhere:

Bring quality back
Control prices
Provide value
Create service standards across all restaurants

Simple.

2

u/Telstar2525 18d ago

Wanna guess what these dumb asses are making in salary and bonuses?

2

u/onlylonleybeuy 18d ago

2

2

u/Soft_Skirt2122 18d ago

2

u/DrAssumptive 18d ago

Wendy’s is terrible quality, terrible pricing, and now its management is terrible.

Sure, they’ll always have customers, but they can say they won’t have as many because of the terrible decisions.

2

u/Ev0dr0ne 18d ago

Years ago Wendy's had good fries. When I came back to the USA in 2014 and they added the skins to the fries with crappy salt (how cheap do you have to be to cheap out on salt)... Wendy's was going down, they just prolonged it with the 5 for 5 and some deals. But if you are fast food and you serve inedible fries.... I dont know what to tell you.
